  • @jetaburada wow...it was something else. I can see to where I could get used to it. Kind of tastes like a pretty powerful hardboiled egg...but I got through it. At the yoke first then popped that whole birdie in my mouth and ate away. Not something I could eat alot...but I can see getting used to the texture and eating it more. I'm posting my video tomorrow.   • Dude this is the BOMB... I feel sorry for the Chickens But this is far too good... Get some hot sauce on that and BAM it's de shet... Try before you judge? Plus we kill alot of animals already, what wrong with eating a duck egg? At least we eat it all instead of wasting parts.

  • it looks disgusting but it's very tasty but make sure it is hot!! do not eat it cold!!!....and one thing there's another partner of balut it is (penoy) it looks like a normal egg and also looks like a balut but it has no chick inside and no blood clots you could only see the yolk it's very pleasing to eat than balut but not tastier than balut it's like eating a whole yolk of a normal egg

    Now, I don't particularly care for Balut myself, but I'm sure others like brother for whom this has been an enjoyed dish since early youth would prefer if you would identify the substance as what it is (egg white) so ignorant posters will not go off speculating various things (i.e. skull)

    Also, I've been told the egg white is in fact the best part and if saved for last works well to clean ones teeth. I realize preference dictates a person's advice, but this is misleading.

  • Actually BlackDragon, it's usually a part of the white the forms a bit of cartilage during development of the embryo. Depending on how the balut is cooked, the bones are very tender and easy to eat, very rarely are they hard. It really just depends on the region you're eating it though, some people like the bones crunchier.

  • A Phillipino doctor told me that Balut is good for men and is 3 times better than Viagra! Is that true? It is easy to find in Asian and Far East supermarkets in the US. I just went into one of these stores and bought 4 eggs for about $1.50 each and have them in the refrigerator at the moment..hope they keep OK that way. One woman in the shop said that they make men "strong and hard" and makde a strange gesture with her hand and they all laughed! Anybody know better??

  • Wow eating too much of it can cause gout though. I never heard of this before! I guess I have to remember its cooked and not crunchy, right? Please tell me its not crunchy. And why not chicken's eggs? Why a duck? sorry for all the questions! :)

    It's not crunchy. Why not chicken's eggs? Some said that chicken's eggs don't taste as good as duck's eggs. But on the contrary, chicken's eggs smells and taste better than duck's eggs. The duck's eggs are used as balut because in the past duck's eggs are more abundant but discarded unlike chicken's eggs, they are used as poultry eggs as well as production for Chicken meat for consumption (Many people don't normally eat duck's meat).   • I tried one of these for the first time tonight. Once you get past the *you-gotta-be-kidding-me* stage and actually try it, its really not that bad. It taste kinda like a gamey boiled chicken egg. I tried it with salt but i bet it would be better with some good ol' tobasco.

  • the best time and place to eat "balut" is at night time and under a flickering lamp post. thats the time when balut vendors just got the newly cooked baluts. yes, it is best eaten while still hot and fresh..balut vendors starts distributing balut by 8pm until the wee hours in the morning... ballooooot... balooot....

    Now my wife has to eat Haring Dutch style when she is here

  • 15 minutes is the correct time. I eat these during the Tet celebration in New Orleans East at the Vietnamese church's festival. They eat it with salt and pepper and Vietnamese cilantro, but I like to add srirachi. I will try your vinegar sauce--it sounds good. Thanks.

    Thanks for the comment and support. You should really try out the vinegar sauce, it doesn't just sounds good but it will also conceal the mildly unusual smell, especially for those who have just tasted Balut for the very first time.

  • More information: There is what they call a balut factory although it looks just like a small house were balut eggs are cooked in huge cooking ovens and done in batches, they tend to differ from the time I have done my own cooking but not at an hour and a half.

    An hour and a half of boiling can make a beef meat tender. That's too much for a small piece of egg. Although you can reheat the balut eggs at times, and the best time to eat a balut is when it is still hot.

  • 3. Chicken eggs - these are the faked balut eggs sold that's saturating the market because there are times that the real balut eggs are scarce; as chicken eggs are easier to find and are more cheaper.

  • YES, there are different kinds of balut eggs:

    1. Rice field or wild ducks (usually their feathers are in splotches of brown and black camouflage colors) - these are the original form of balut.

    2. Domesticated ducks (although some wild ducks are already domesticated; these domesticated ducks that I mean have white feathers) - these are now commonly used as the baluts in the market.

  • Well at this moment ,she unfortunatly is not living with me yet,but she told me that she made some for her Nephews and Nieces,and the first ones were not good even after 45minutes,and when i asked here how come, she replied they had to boil 1 and half hour,

    So here is my question

    does the time depend on the ammound of eggs,

    or are there differnt kinds of Balut,

    I mean how come you say 15 min is enough,and she is saying 1 and half hour?

  • That's really a good question RR2510. I was using a thin cooking pan and at high heat. The one that you've seen in the video was done at 15 MINUTES (boiling time and not from the time the eggs were placed on the cooking pan).

    my wife is Filipina and she told me you have to boil the Balut for 1 and half hour NOT 15 minutes

    Thanks for the comment but unfortunately your wife is wrong. Could you imagine an egg boiled to an hour and a half?

    I have raised a whole troop of ducks and had an ample experience of cooking the balut.
