yall are cruel as hell to a guy for not beating his old records, as if that were the reason he plays -_- as if youtube commenters carried any weight of their own ^_^
Putting Menuhin on a stage all on his own like that is the antithetical opposite of showing a red rag to a bull. I personally think the guy was the most talented violinist ever, but this video does not show him at his best.
You just don't really know about Menuhin Decimotox. Menuhin was perhaps the greatest talent ever to pick up a fiddle. But after his famous "vacation" at age 17 to regroup his life, he began to analyze how he was able to play so well. And that was the death knell. For the rest of his life he struggled to regain the amazing abilities he had as a youth.
Please listen to his early stuff here on YouTube. He was the 20th century's most dazzling prodigy--even more than Heifetz!
He is not even close to being the violinist many people think he is. He may be a good recorder, but not a good performer. Every recording I've heard is good, but every performance I've seen video of, he's either messes up horribly or played out of tune half the time.
The early Menuhin reveals a stupendous talent. He became palsied unusually young, and the effects, if not the cause, were becoming clear before he was forty. He shook quite visably after that, but only in his bow arm. He only was able to play through it due to his phenomenal talent, but he should not have. Listen to the early recordings. Incredible.
I knew another artist with the identical problem. He could still do anything with the left hand, but the bow trembled horribly.
i really love menuhin. But i have to confess that sometime he doesn't play well.. The staccato from 44'' to 50'' is not good. I can't hear the notes. For me, such things, even it is important to be recognized as it is, are not important at all. He gave us so tremendous music and interpretations. For example, the second movement of Beethoven's concerto, or the end of the cadenza of the first movement of Brahm's concerto. This is not music, this is more than that, he plays spirit.
well, i see that you take that as a judgement. It is not. I'm a musician - not a violonist -, and i am conscious how difficult it is. But i accept the critics too. it's not because it's difficult that it sounds beautiful and correct... Don't feel offended, it's what i feel and i have the right to express it as an opinion.
I agree with you ,he plays spirit .He is divine. But ,regarding the notes that are not hearing well, the posting says he is playing under tha stage ,and the quality of the sound is ,again ,not too good. Thus ,we can not really know if it's his playing that's like that ...He is ,any way ,wnderful.
apparently, you gave his bruch dvd a 4/5 on amazon and commented that
"The Mozart and Bruch are among the most romantic concertos in the entire repitoire and I like Menuhin for the mushy stuff and not so much for the virtuoso stuff. He has the elegance of Kreisler but not so much the demonic technique of Heifetz, Rabin, or Kogan. I do consider this video worthwhile."

Do you play the violin, If you do, you should realize how difficult that is, and if not, you shouldn't make these judgements.

That's absolutely fantastic--I love Menuhin when you wonder how he keeps it together.
Anyone know where that complete performance is available?
