Is that a bowl of water? Are you supposed to have a bowl of freshwater for them? We have a mudskipper and I'm finding it very difficult to find any good caresheets about them.
@zebralover2270 I got my first one shipped to me from a pet store several states away as for at the time I couldn't find any others closert to me for 30 bucks, plus 30 more for shipping which was a huge rip-off. Later I've located them at a local pet shop that's selling them for $10.00. I highly reccomend you don't get them shipped, as the shipping process is very hard for them to survive. ):
I saw mudskippers in my nearest aqarium creatures & goods suppliers. First time I seen domestic ones. They had a nice tank with a lower area with fairly deep water & a higher are with shallow water. Can these creatures live with african dwarf frogs or will they attack them?
Oh Valdemar you silly shnooter - just playin with your food... I think he wants a wresting buddy. Like it was so funny - he didn't want to attack the cricket unless the cricket's back was turned - cricket turns around Valdemar runs away at 1:02 - Maybe he needs snack size crickies
cool fish , horrible hunter. what i keep waiting for is a larger fish to come out of nowhere and eat them both. nice setup and fish regardless of their hunting prowes
Song is by Paul Oakenfold on the Traceport album. Forget the actual name of the song but the whole album is basically one song (transitioning track to track).
mudskippers should be classified as an amphibian for the following reasons: Fleshy and strong limbs able to walk and create movement, slippery and smooth skin, bulgy and popped out eyes, can spend extended periods of time out of water.
Good thought Santi but not quite correct. I do not know much biology, but I know enough to understand the mudskipper is an example of CONVERGENT EVOLUTION. It lives an amphibian lifestyle but is far from being an amphibian. One of the most basic differences between amphibians and fish is, whereas fish live their entire lives breathing through gills, amphibians undergo METAMORPHOSIS where their gills develop into air breathing lungs. (E.g. an aquatic tadpole becoming a terrestrial frog)
santi, they can spend extender periods out of water only because of their ability to store water and use it while on land. By your logic anything that can hold its breath underwater should be classified as an amphibian.
First of all, I think who ever put Mudskippers in the class of fish, was an idiot, they are obviously more related to frogs and such, and I also think Valdemar was playing with the cricket, or he would have had him in the first minute.
mudskippers and lungfish are such interesting subjects. how do go about deciding whether these things should be classified as fish or something else? don't get me wrong, they are referred to as fish, but i just don't see them that way.
mudskipper, its a fish thats kinda semi evolved into a reptile, it can live out of water, it breathes through its skin, absorbing moisture from the atmosphere, amazing creatures
So did het get him in the end? gosh, it was so interesting' like watching national geographic; it had drama, it had comedy, sexual tension... lol jk, nice tank :-)
Any chance you can help me with something? where the hell can you find these? i love them soooo much but cant find them in pet stores, secondly i hear theyre vicious...can you keep them in a tank with other fish/animals? and thirdly, what size tank do you have?
I had to get mine shipped over 5 states away... and it died due to the damn idiot who shipped it. If you don`t give them a big enough tank, they can be territorial with other mudskippers. If you want to get it shipped, be sure it`s not about to come in a blastic baggy with water and a piece of small styraphome ;)
This just makes my amphibian obsession worse. Thanks for posting, especially the great jumps! If mudskippers are pretty strong for their size, glad they are little.
my mudskippers gang up on my crabs and they beat each other up. im gonna get a new tank for the crabs bcuz they get hurt and even if tis is normal im not gonna risk it. before i had the crabs with the skippers, they were ok so i think there wont be a difference
Anyone know how much salt to add to 5 gallons of water for a mudskipper tank? (Its a ten gallon aquarium with half water half land, so five gallons of water, but it already has 8 Tablespoons of salt which i was told to put in,2 tablespoons per gallon (8/2= 4 gallons of water) Need help with this!
1 tbsp per gallon... it all depends on where u got ur mudskipper from, if u got it from ur LFS, try to keep it the same as theirs, then add more or less salt slowly every month... to get to the point where he/she is happy...
im hoping to aquire on of these. i currently have a fire bellied toad which i can tank it with. i also have a turtle an oscar, a betta, a algae eater, an iguana which i will be parting with soon, and a pacman frog
no if you think logically if they are free they could get hunted.. and eaten! so if people are here to look after them there safe to live a happy life! (:
ha ha I`m dieing for a mudskipper, I`m obsessed with them XD I do animations (which I still am working on and to upload them) I live in the US, and I cannot find any in the USA!!! Or anybody who has them in the US =(
i think the mudskipper and the grasshopper are both not quite on the bright side lol. the grasshopper for standing still while the mudskipper stalked him. and the mudskipper for not destroying the lil thing lol.

what exactly is a good reason to get anything???? i mean, you keep dogs cos you like the look of a certain breed, you keep birds cos they keep yuo company, and so you keep mudskippers cos they 'look cool'!
Well, I get my dogs from shelters, so I suppose I get them because I know that I have the finances to take care of them, they need homes or else they'll be put to sleep. Get a mudskipper because you're familiar with the species, love it, and know that you know enough about it to keep one.
Is that a bowl of water? Are you supposed to have a bowl of freshwater for them? We have a mudskipper and I'm finding it very difficult to find any good caresheets about them.

Well, I get my dogs from shelters, so I suppose I get them because I know that I have the finances to take care of them, they need homes or else they'll be put to sleep. Get a mudskipper because you're familiar with the species, love it, and know that you know enough about it to keep one.
