I believe one of the greatest voices of all time. Mme Horne makes it look effortless but it is not. Neither the score or the length of time she is singing this piece. I have heard her go from high A to her lowest note with clarity and precision. She had such control of her voice as I seldom heard in my lifetime or from recordings of others. I only lament that the digital age only came in time to capture for all time the mediocrity and low quality of singers and performances. Thank you for this.

She sings flat and breathes where she wants to but I wish we had someone around like her today. Her best work was duetting with Dame Joan when she was a bit younger than this.
Her first major singing job was dubbing Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen Jones in 1954, and her operatic debut was at the Vienna festival in 1956. She'd been on stage for a good 20 years by the time this performance was filmed...;-) She started as a soprano...there's even a live recording of her singing Brunnhilde's immolation floating around...it's really something, and VERY well sung...
L.A. Times critic Martin Bernheimer complained about her "chest tones," wanting her to sing only in the "head." It's a criticism I never understood, since it was all her voice.
Sorry to GiovanniAntonioBazzi, but, in an otherwise magnificent performance, she DOES hit a few flat notes in the final "Ti rivedró" section.
