Wasn't there a figure in the US Army who created an innovative rifle but attempted to refuse the reward of a position to command field units because he knew he wasn't that good a tactician or strategist?

I think the film is also trying to draw a parallel here- good technical officers don't necessarily make good field officers.  Except in this case, this Mekum guy doesn't know that he is no good as a field commander despite having created the super soldiers.

The powerful soviet army did suffer such traps and ambushes in Afghanistan, orchestrated by much better trained, less equipped Pakistani special forces. One technique they used was to launch a small attack to get the russians' attention, then have 2 mujahadeen on the chase, the russians were naive enough to follow and try to catch the mujahadeen, only to end up getting killed by 100s in their ambush trap.

Hmmmm..the Colonel New Improve Soldiers are not so perfect after all when it comes fighting in combat..these guys have non-combat experience when they are up against one man whose has a lot of combat experience since before the new guys were still in a test tube.

I like the concept of this movie, but it wasn't pulled off right. The soldiers are stupid.. and that sniper trap was stupid. How could he possibly pre-aim the shots to not only take out those two soldiers but then another at different positions.

Technically...if there were 17 left when Todd says "I'm gonna kill 'em all sir" and there were 9 left before the wind and "ambush" explosion....there would leave 1 but Todd killed 4 more on Crawler 1 and 4 more before he got to Cain...wouldn't that mean that Todd killed 27 before getting to Cain?
