hey, thanx for the comment! i learned it in the early 80s, all by ear! took me around 2 weeks to play the whole song accurately, included the solo. at this time i was already playing guitar for 3 years. so you are early with just 6 months experience!!! very brave! but i bet, you will make it ... keep rocking!

Music however is more than sound. And Rush is pretty bad at "music", but thats an endless debate, and most Rush fans are so fanatic...

in the first place, music is always a matter of taste, so nobody can criticize the taste of others! Rush is not emotional music, it is constructed music ...sometimes it is like maths! J.S.Bach, for me one of the most genius composers of all the times, did it as well. his music is made with the brain and not with the heart or the soul.

I remember one time at a party, I was tapping at a drum set, , very excited... then i looked at a friend, and he was smiling and dancing, and he just said to me "hey buddy, let it flow, play with the heart",, maybe he was right and suddenly i realized how tense i was, ,. I suppose if somebody can play Rush music and feel relaxed, then okay,enjoy mate!

Look up for Richard lloyd´s website and its lessons,,there is an approach to the mecanics of playing that finally makes sense and really makes you understand why the fretboard is like that! ive felt kinda like your hand starts to learn how to move through the fretboard AND the musical relations(intervals) as they are the same thing! check the lessons on intrevals, major scale loops, etc cheers

No chaos, the intro is correct the way he played it. At 1:23, you might want to try try playing that entire part on the E string only instead of the first two notes on the B. Just a suggestion. It feels smoother for me and Alex plays it that way too. But you seem to be able to jump strings nicely. Very good work.

You must have learned the song from the Guitar Pro file, because that's how it's tabbed in it (and its wrong).

Yeah that part is on the B string, all of it, utilizing slides and double hammer-on/trills on the 5th and 8 frets, I've seen Alex do it live 4 times.

BTW he never plays the solo live close to the original, but I tried to get the solo as close as I could minus the one bad sounding note he hits (only noticeable at 50% speed, and barely noticeable then).

On stage I'd likely play a phrygian dominant run halfway through the solo similar to what he does live, but more my own style and all legato.

i learned this song in the 80s just by listening. i can´t really remember how long i took, but i bet it was around a week or 2! try to learn the song part by part! i know it is hard to play the entire song accurately! cut it in short parts and practice them seperately, then you will crack it soon!
