  • Feels quite shallow even making a comment- everything that needs to be said is in the song.

  • :'-)

  • This is the first non- Tim Minchin I have by choice happily listened to in about a month or two! well done susan vega for breaking the pattern!!

  • this song is one of my favorite song of all time

  • great music

  • beautiful as ever

  • She's a wonderful storyteller and songwriter. Just saw her in concert in D.C. last night and it was magic. Her voice is still just the same.

  • mebdoc - How is it that people conveniently forget that Israel was invaded by the 'Palestinians' and that they won that land while defending themselves? Should America give back all the lands from West Texas to California that she won in the Mexican-American war? Americas track record with the Mexicans left stranded, as a result of war, in America is not much better than that of Israel’s record with the Palestinians stranded in the Gaza Strip.

  • this is one of my favorite all time songs

  • wow this is the first time ive ever heard this and not a minute in the song i like it alot..Wow Suzanne you are great

  • The was incredible – such a very powerful song.

  • Fantastic track. Amazing lady!

  • This song is about (to me at least) the madness of WAR .... and here I see people discussing about Australia and Brittan ... in WO-I

    ???????????

They did not listen to the lyrics ... I guess! Which is sad

  • @jat13 Thanks for posting this! Do you have any idea if this is available on a DVD or not? Thanks!

  • why cant this song just be beautifully written and sung...and just about a young queen , who learned.....

  • Well i aint fighting for no queen,as an Australian our soldiers still swear allegiance to her and not to Aus but not me i only fight for Aus no english queen.

  • @MrFattyfatfatboy well so not expect british to help you the runt

  • @clazza01 im no runt im fat and british never ever helped Australia you killed 60000 in the first world war and ran off and left us to the japs in the second ,US marines saved us no pommys dead in New Guinea only Aus and US soldiers so you have already failed us plus Tommies only good at holding the flanks and driving tanks thats why Australians are your shock troops but no more no more.

  • @MrFattyfatfatboy Shutup.

  • @kathleenbensimon hey i was here trolling about that foreign queen to many Australians have died for dont tell me to shut up,in fact im a tubby version of said soldier lamenting to that queen ,though i wouldve stopped by the kitchen on the way to see the queen and the song would go :as ths soldier chewed on a drumstick he spat and choked i wont fight for you and can i have some desert to go;

  • @MrFattyfatfatboy You're a f'in Potato head!!!This song:if you're capable of lookin' deep enough :IS ALL ABOUT THE FACT THATMOST OF US ON THIS PLANET ARE TOTALLY INCABLE OF 'DEALIN' W. OUR FEELINS' : to the point that it seems (an illusion,o9fcourse)easier to KILL THOSE WHOM U LOVE - INC. YOURSELF(if anyone's ever reached that higher level!!!!!)than to OPEN YA FRIGGIN' HEART MATEY!!!!!!!!!!!creashonrebel

  • @Mangosunsplash Learn to speak English, please.

  • @originalsteveo What are U????From the Land Down Under?! "OOOH,I'll sing you a song -an' it won't take long :'ALL POMies are Bastards'!"Creashonrebel

  • gorgeous voice gorgeous woman.as for that person with the raghead comment.your a friggin nazi.stop ruining peoples enjoyment with your small mind.

  • I can understand the above comment but for Vega to plan to play in Israel at this stage of the awful political situation, in the context of the suffereing of the Palestinians and the boycott, leaves me bewildered at her decision and frankly, quite disappointed. Gutted in fact because I love her music.

  • @mebdoc well, music seems to transend everything, racial lines, societal moreys, why not political and national lines too? and as long as we are at it, why don't you inlighten me, what does the world have against jews? and israel? i don't get it. why don't they focus on themselves, and leave these people alone?

  • @mebdoc The ragheads like music too...no point in boycotting them or they will have to listen to that awful wailing they call music over there

  • happy birthday suzanne

  • @themadchives Well said. Can I add my belated greetings also Suzanne, you have given many hours of peace and (enjoyable) solitude

  • Or we could all like this because it's a brilliant song??? ;-)

  • 10 million veterans in the UK.......

  • great singer thanks

  • I love the emotion I see in her while she sings this song. from 4:07-4:31, I'm confused did she have the soldiar killed? I did not think so but would like to know what others think so I can be sure. Thanks

  • @822myfavmusic - Yes, the queen had the soldier killed for defying her.

  • @Namnarooni i dont think she killed him beacuse he defied her but because he broke her veneer and got to the woman underneath the crown . she couldnt take that and would rather the life she had before than risk being happy, we thats my take glad to meet a fellow fan though!

  • @Fenris357 i agree. i think she was much more disturbed by his words and their truth than by his unwillingness to fight. but the best part about music or poetry is that it doesn't matter what the writer's intended meaning is. whatever meaning you get out of it is the truth. this is very high on my list of favorite suzanne vega songs, a list topped by "small blue thing."

  • @tishhead i love small blue thing! mind the ladies not done a duff song yet in-fairness.

  • @Fenris357 i believe it's allegorical, it comes from her subconscious and SV herself doesn't completely understand it. but i believe the underlying meaning has a couple levels, one being a woman who refuses a man breaking his heart and she feels guilty... i believe there is another underlying meaning having to do with war and his nobility for refusing to fight when he knows he is risking his life from the beginning, by refusing "you can do what you will" :)

  • Phenominal Song, but then again "Time after Time", is a timeless song and just as poignant...by Cinny looper. I know I know( Cindy Lauper..) Unique true D best.I have always loves Suzanna Vega..OBAMA should listen to this, that guy is a fricking pompeus assbite, with high visibility of naricissim...God help us all..

  • 20 people are deaf.

this is one of the most beautiful story-songs. <3

  • fantastic performance of a timeless song

  • Brilliant song about destructive uncompromising pride, and the war grinds on.........

  • This song reminds me my old wood house in a rainy day.

  • bibribbob2010 - Suzanne STILL sounds great. She was touring last year and I saw at the Lowry, Salford, UK. She sounded just as great as ever.

I love this song: it has such a chilling end. A seemingly fairy tale song, but with a twist at the end: no compromises!

  • I don't understand.

On the line "He laid his hand then on top of her head / And he bowed her down to the ground" I just fall apart.

I can't even read the words out loud - hit that line and it's all over.

Maybe it's my "secret burning thread - It cuts me inside, and often I've bled"

Magic. Just magic. Her words, her music, her.

  • I must have heard this song about half a hundred times, and it just about leaves me in tears every single time...

  • I've never once heard anyone get it right what this song is about. I've actually heard a seasoned expert in psychology make a complete analysis of it using a filter of Jung... so close. If only she'd tried Freud she might've gotten it.

  • i mean i do not like the british monarchy

  • great musive just do like the british monarchy as canada australia , newzealand and various other country go by british rule which is bullshit the usa is the only country that does not worship the queen

  • she's the girl. we like her. we want her. we want her to be beutified. we shall have to have words with the pope.

  • I love this song :) it's amazing, and she brings it to life with her voice :) we analysed it for lit lesson and I fell in love with it even before I heard the song :) the music just makes it even more wonderful ~

  • She doesn't want to be a queen any

more than he wants to be a soldier

  • I've always wanted to sing this in a band, but I can never get through it without bawling. This is my very favoritest song of hers!

  • @DarbukaGirl the same here....

  • After watching so many videos on you tube from Suzanne Vega tonight... She can't be anything less than what I already thought of her from CD. An inspiration.

  • never heard this singer before now, and i randomly stoped working when i started to hear this and just stoped, my back shivering, this is a very very good song and singer, certainly too underrated for her real talent!

  • Great song from a great lp - I nearly left it getting off the train at Sandling c 1985 - thanks to whoever it was made sure I took this home

  • when he put her down i thought she was going to say she gave him head on the bed :D

  • -War-Must it always be based on poor politics, greed, and someone else's pleasure and selfish desires?- Is this worth fighting and dying for... Is it?

  • After marching today in Madison, Wisconsin, "The Queen and The Soldier" came on iTunes and I nearly cried, knowing my state's leader is being as blinded and selfish as the queen, at such an enormous cost to the people.

  • @coconutcaat You're all wrong. She is fighting for the people, "You won't understand, and you may as well not try. I've swallowed a secret burning thread, it cuts me inside and often I've bled." Your country is faced with an inescapable war your people will hate you, your people will die, that all lays on you. You must be strong, not for this generation but the ones after that will benefit from staving off the attack. Sacrifice all that makes you human for your country, so that they don't haveto

  • @rationalization2 I'm not talking about my country. I'm talking about my state. I'm not talking about the war overseas. I'm talking about the war on the middle and lower classes. I'm talking about the fact that after several weeks of nonstop protests, politicians have managed to divide the people and turn our state against the very people who try to help them (public servants). I can live as an honest woman, giving all I can but doing so is already driving me quickly to the grave.

  • I don't get what it's about. Help anyone?

  • WONDERFUL !

  • i dont know her but iam starting to like her

  • Onde Suzane foi parar? Ela é linda, tender as the night

  • Just like Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega is another living Legend!

  • @whitelight7733 Sorry, but Tracy Chapman isn't worthy to carry Suzanne Vega's guitar case. They're not even in the same league.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheDewphus I beg to differ! I've seen both of them live & found Suzanne Vega a bit boring when she sat on a stool & started reading from a book which took at least a half hour which I thought, took from the flow of the gig. If I wanted to hear a reading, I would have joined a book club. But when I was at a Tracy Chapman gig I called to her to sign a cd cover for me but she just dashed into her car & drove off so I just think both have points which they could improve on.I still love em' both!

  • Powerful. CS Lewis said "The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing — to reach the Mountain, to find the place where all the beauty came from — my country, the place where I ought to have been born. Do you think it all meant nothing, all the longing? The longing for home? For indeed it now feels not like going, but like going back." If surrendering to forgiveness is the cost for entering such a homeland, then letting go is the very best thing I will ever do.

  • Can everyone tells me what this story is about? We're going to analyse this song in school in the music lessons, and i've chosen this, but I'm a bit confused what this song is about? Anbody please help me? Thanks :)

  • how to command an audience.. master class

  • Well she has him shot after he puts the hard word on her. Fair enough. Impudent wretch.

  • Not a whimper from the Crowd..good old Germany great people

  • she haves a beautifull voice

  • Suzanne really knows how to express her emotion in this song, through her voice and guitar, which is why i much prefer this live version rather than the original studio recording

  • Most UNDERRATED female vocalist of all time. She was great, just didn't sound like every one else.

To me there is something special about being unique

  • @bigrigbob2010 Exactly! And not looking and acting like a whore - it's so refreshing. x

  • @MsGinxy Pretty sad commentary on the general publics taste in music when people like brittny spears lady gaga are millionares with only 1/10th of Suzzane's talent (and thats being generous) while she is more of a cult hit

  • @bigrigbob2010 Those who exhibit static Quality will only generally listen to music of static Quality. Appreciating artists like Vega etc. is dynamic.

  • war is horrible

  • Self-betrayal is the most tragic kind.

  • A seemingly admirable order of play which surround sound in the open don't pay off big in echoes from far away cliffs, Mount Everest given over to seismic shifts.

  • @FoxIslandman: While Germany returns this favor with Rammstein...

  • what comes from the heart reaches the heart

  • Exquisite performance, beautiful camera work. Will never forget being transfixed/shattered by that album while working as a college DJ in the mid 80s.

  • Love her song and her voice. Check out JJ Heller Who will love me for me. Very similar voice!

  • Love her song and her voice. Check out JJ Heller Who wil love me for me. Very similar voice!

  • I love her so much

  • so afraid to lose, better not to try, pre-emptive strikes in relationships... not good.

  • It's somewhat sad how such an beautiful song triggers a quarrel about whether Palestins or Israeli are right. Come on! Just listen, this woman is amazing!

  • Hmm, am I crazy or this is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen? Jessica Alba etc etc BS, SUZANNE VEGA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Dorsal81 You are on the right track buddy. She is beautiful. Those pop women can

    not compare. Peace.

  • i dont like the way she plays the guitar

    nice song tho

  • WOW!!!!! i'm speechless

  • Heartbreaking and magical. Her entire debut album is something special, but this is the high point of a high point. Thanks for posting.

  • I love the juxtaposition of her face with the boat on the water on the second song. BTW, the second song is The World Before Columbus! And today is Columbus Day, hahah.

  • Absolutley Fantastic!!...I love song.

  • Absolutely superb song. Fantastic!

  • deze is voor Renata, en ik hoop dat ik snel dat licht weer zie.

  • Loved it....

  • If your love were taken from me... Every color would be in black and white... - simply breathtaking. Looks like just few words, but its so much more...

  • too bad the titlte of the video doesn't say "world before columbus"

  • way back in the day,,,,, this was the very first cd i bought love suzanne vega

  • Love all her songs. :)

  • @elgremioestaenhuelga and @KatanaWithAGuitar I clicked on the link to this video so I could listen to some nice music, not so I could read a silly racist squabble over something pointless. And whatever Israel or the Muslims may be doing, there are hundreds of inoccent people from Israel or Muslims who have done nothing wrong. In insulting eachother using racism, you are hypocrites. And if you have to say negative things, at least make them related to the song or something!

  • The second song is "World before Columbus" - Great stuff !

  • Her voice is so beautiful and sincere that it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I've seen her twice live and she was amazing

  • still almost perfect !

    @ Rockchick80s

    Nice words, exactly!

  • One word. Beautiful.

  • The good thing about this song is that even though she gave her own interpretation for it, there is so many ways in which people can view or be touched by this song. So many ways to interpret it.

  • que bonito canta ya me avia olvidado de ella por un buen rato

  • thanks Suzanne

  • Don't involve politics in good music.

  • @lord112 politics? by politics you mean GAZA genocide?

  • Comment removed

  • @elgremioestaenhuelga Only an Idiot would use the term "genocide" when talking about Gaza. Israel acts out of self defense. I remind you, that *AFTER* Israel got out of Gaza strip, literally thousands of rockets were fired at Israel.

  • @KatanaWithAGuitar Only an assassin or maybe the IDF (same shit) would use the term "self defense" for the genocide in Gaza.."katanawithaguitar", i would love to kick your ass..but only if we call it "self defense" you f...coward

  • @elgremioestaenhuelga

Your comment shows once again the true face of Muslims. If something doesn't suit your point of view, you will "kick ass", and use the "f" word. I will not get down to your low level. I will only say that cowards are those that hide behind their woman and children. If you didn't get this - hint - Palestinians.

  • @KatanaWithAGuitar im not muslim nor jew, i just dont care about religion, so that's where you are wrong and where you are lying (again) you zionists people always lie..the difference betwen you and me, i do care about woman and children everywhere (not just Palestine) and i know when someone is getting a paycheck from israHELL ass. Grow a pair, come out of the closet babykiller..

  • @KatanaWithAGuitar Why don't we stop beating around the bush and say it: Israel doesn't have the right to be a country.

  • They're both equally evil. Equally. May both sides mutually destruct.

  • DON'T PLAY APARTHEID ISRAEL!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @kareemahnour You are a stupid person who knows nothing about Israel and the conflict, so just shut the **** up. The Arabs have always wanted to destroy Israel, (1948-1967-1973), and when they realized they couldn't do it with their lousy army, the decided to turn to terror. See wikipedia on "Dolphinarium_discotheque_suicide_bombing", when dozens of teenage girls were killed by a terrorist.

  • @KatanaWithAGuitar

fuck the goverment of israel, they are evil basterds that brainwash the ppl of israel

and have killed thousands and thousands innocentt ppl

  • @124bababa How would you know?! You're being brainwashed by the Muslim extremists!

  • @KatanaWithAGuitar don't think so. History tells a very sad tale about how the israel govrement brainwash and force children into the army to kill ppl that have done nothing wrong

  • this song is timeless...

  • Sends shivers down my spine.BRILLIANT.

  • One of my favourite songs of her. Beautiful voice and such gentle guitar. Love it. Lyrics for this song are also beautiful.

  • she's the only one storyteller of world, and i'm so happy ,'cos i've asked to her the sense of this life

the response is in her songs...

  • stop sorrow!

for me it's better if the queen fell in love.

  • she always wanted me to tell her a story. I never knew what to say.. but now.. when the battle is lost. this is the story.

  • just met her yesterday, shes a lovely person

  • What must it take for an artist - one small person - to get up and expose herself in front of tens of thousands of people with no protection but a guitar and her voice.... Wow...

  • great guitar work together with singing,

  • Straziante e forte!

    Invade il profondo.

SuZanne Vega è una artista grandiosa!!!

  • when I heard this song couple years ago in spite I,m about 60,s,I tried to download the lyrics without knowing English well.I just felt the strait of the song

  • How much music I lost when I was in my 20s... In 1987 I was 22, and just now I discover this treasure. Thank you all to share it. Thanks Suzanne for magic.

  • This song has been a favourite of mine since I was 11, that was 1987! It never fails to stir me. This is one of my top 10 songs. Beautiful. She's a wondeful songwriter!

  • I've never heard suzanne before now, and I don't get that easily touched by music, but this was something real. I just feel it through my whole body! I just want to cry, don't know why, but it's so beautiful!

  • I remember discovering this album as a college DJ, and being turned into a little puddle as I listened--the understated instrumentation, the song sequence, the burning intensity channeled through a very delicate vessel--unforgettable.

  • absolutely outstanding.

  • This song sill brings a tear to my eye, even after all these years

  • it remains beautiful after all these years

  • Suzanne Voice is so full Emotion, I love her Songs. Suzanne for ever !

best regards to Mrs. Vega and Friends,

    a Fan Called Jürgen....

  • the lyrics, the story, the song; all so good.

  • Brilliant. No more needs to be said.

  • I used to have anorexia, and this was fantastic for keeping a beat in my head as I ran. I feel dirty now for using such a beautiful song to starve myself to...it deserves so much better

  • great song!

  • This song always makes me cry!

  • This is the single most stunning live performance of suzanne vega, that you can find on youtube. I've been watching other videos, I always come back for this one. You gotta just love this woman.

there's something secretive and mysterious about her and yet something so ... pure. I can't tell. I can't help it, when she sings I feel ...well, free! I don't know how to put it else.

Thank you for so much inspiration suzanne.

  • SHE IST BEATIFUL AND SOOOO GREAT!!!

  • Never grow tired of listening to this song. She just reaches out and touches a magical place inside all of us. Wonderful words.

  • The battlefield of love. I know just the spot you speak of. . . and doesn't she do it well!

  • And that voice...... ;o)# <3

  • @rockchick80s I read "Now I grow tired of listening to this song." 0_O And then i just simply thought you do because you listen to it often xD

  • Suzanne Vega is my best friends favorite singer. So that puts her automatically into my top 5 or 6. Beautiful song and great production.

  • goes with the minstrel and the queen, 5star forever, play it to lizzie the lizard, ha ha ha...

  • I have not heard a female singer who has a voice as beautiful and as sexy as Suzanne Vega's.
