I still get chills watching this video and despite my psychedelic state remember vividly Mick calling out "brothers and sistas ...cool out!" I'll bet he was about to shit himself. What a trip!!
For weeks we were told on Bay Area radio the Stones were looking for a place to hold a free concert. It was to be the West Coast answer to Woodstock. If it had been held in Golden Gate Park as planned I'll bet it would have had more of the peace/love vibe of the city at that time. The city chickened out as it was bound to be huge. Altamont Speedway offered their property and it was thrown together in a few days. There was this crazy exodus of hippies!
As I slogged along towards Livermore with 1000's of other lost souls trying to hitch a ride in an insane traffic jam (they had closed the freeway both directions!) I realized it was faster to walk. Gradually I hopped on the trunks of cars that started to move and made my way back to the 580/680 interchange where I tried to sleep in the ice plant. Finally got a couple of rides that got me back to my parents house at 4am. They were totally freaked out and assumed I was the one who had been killed!
I was in the crowd that suddenly got pushed back by all the attacking Hells Angels at the beginning of Sympathy for the Devil. Somebody slugged me in the back and suddenly I was laying there watching that naked chick while resting my head on an empty 3.0 liter bottle of Red Mountain. Soon after total anarchy ensued and the Stones were climbing a ladder back in a helicopter to safety. I had lost my shoes, coat, etc. and while walking out of the morass picked up a piece of broken glass in my foot.
As I approached the venue off the side of the freeway were 2 dudes in rocking chairs with sawed off shotguns and doberman pinschers selling kilos of pot out of a large white van. Someone brought 1000's of plastic coffee can lids which began flying all around like make-shift frisbies. It was Woodstock West until the sun went down and the drugs and alcohol started to really take effect. As the Stones were helicoptered in crowd rushed the stage and I was buried about 10 deep tripping my brains out.
I was 16 years old and made this concert thanks to an older brother who drove me there. Had sex with a hippy chick in the back of a pick up truck in a sleeping bag while cruising down 680 on the way there. I decided the acid I had taken wasn't strong enough so I bought another hit from a guy who was selling it on the side of the freeway with a top hat that had a sign saying"LSD $2". It was a very "groovy" event at first with CSNY and the Flying Burrito Bros. I missed Santana. The Dead no showed.
Jagger was scared shitless; the Stones were scared shitless; even the Hell's Angels were scared shitless: Sonny Barger, fully aware of the potential for total disaster if the band stopped playing (imagine 300,000 loaded concertgoers charging the stage!) approached a visibly apprehensive Richards and prodded a pistol into his ribs and said: "Keep playin' that guitar or I'll shoot you...." Disaster. Altamont, as iconic as it is infamous... 1969: coolest year in rock history?

Apparently the deal made with the Hells Angels was that they were not to be a "police force." rather, they were just supposed to sit on the stage enjoy the concert and make sure no one messes with the equipment, speakers, stage, etc. They were paid in beer. Again, bad call. One of the Hells Angel's hit and knocked out the lead singer to Jefferson Airplane earlier in the day while he was performing.
@saintcatherine actually during the Airplane's set .Marty Balin saw a kid in the audience being roughed up. He jumped off the stage and put himself between the kid and the Angel. Thats when he got decked. If Jumpin Jack Jagger was one tenth as brave as Marty that death might not have happened...
This is such a dramatic piece of film footage! Everyone looks freaked out: the fans are crying, and tripping on acid. Fights are breaking . Mick's trying to keep everything under control. It has a very surreal, spooky vibe.

Managed to read Sum Cutler's book, was a great read, looks some somebody higher up wanted this day to be a bad one. Hence all the the bad acid here . I 'm really pissed off no new footage has been released onto dvd.Would have liked to have bought a box set with all the bands that played !
I saw this documentary,it's interesting to see the guys reflect on the whole debacle that went on while they were on stage.To anyone who loves the Stones it's a must see.

I knew the angel in :48 and other shots. He was in the National Guard, and got activated for missing meetings, and was sent to my Army unit in Germany. He doesn't look like it in this video, but he was an absolutely ruthless fighter, and he fought often when he was off duty in downtown Heidelberg. the city of san francisco screwed it up by issuing a permit for a show at golden gate park and then taking it away so this was the only place they could find. the stones had no clue event had been changed until they got there as they were recording in muscle shoals and this was a fly in date not part of a tour date.
@acatkinson 10 people died at this concert. 2 by the Hells Angels, and 8 by being crushed by the rushing crowds to the stage. My Mom was almost one of those deaths.

I knew the angel in :48 and other shots. He was in the National Guard, and got activated for missing meetings, and was sent to my Army unit in Germany. He doesn't look like it in this video, but he was an absolutely ruthless fighter, and he fought often when he was off duty in downtown Heidelberg. As far as I know it was never with anyone in the Army, but with foreign workers - Turks, Yugoslavs, etc. His favored weapon was a straight razor, and he was very fast when he used it. He is likely dead

the city of san francisco screwed it up by issuing a permit for a show at golden gate park and then taking it away so this was the only place they could find. the stones had no clue event had been changed until they got there as they were recording in muscle shoals and this was a fly in date not part of a tour date.
