I love dolls - I have five American Girl dolls (pre-Mattel) and I change them into different outfits going by the season. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking dolls or collecting dolls. However, if you're an adult woman and you're using a doll as a substitute for a real baby, you're longing for a human relationship with a non-human and I don't think that's psychologically healthy. It would be better to find a way to nurture real babies.
Its just like a little boy likes his toy trucks or a woman likes jewrely. We all are in love with a certain thing. We all collect something. There is nothing wrong with these women who make and anjoy these dolls. God put us on this earth to all be different and like different things. So....
Hey, I was hoping someone could answer this question for me if they see it. Why don't these women just adopt babies? There are so many real babies in the world that desperately need a loving home, why would you instead dedicate all that time and care and money to a doll? Is it because they grow up? If so, why not just adopt another baby? I keep hearing "I loved being a mother," not necessarily "I love babies." So it seemed to me like adopting would be a really wonderful option for all involved.

I lost my baby at 8 months and I cannot have any more children because of a genetic disorder. This is something I cannot help, but I wouldn't put a baby at risk again by having another. This is why these therapeutic babies are so amazing. When I get the funds, I would love to get a doll like my son Vincent for myself.
...volunteer work might help...women with children are needing help in every kind of shelter there is...energy spent on comforting and nurturing living children and mothers in need...be a volunteer nanny for the ill...something real...
If a reborn baby can bring comfort or enjoyment for whatever reason, then more power to you. I have a reborn doll it's not as realistic looking as I want it to be. Well I can't have more children right now do to health issues. I hold her sometimes. She gives me peace. People judge me all the time, my wardrobe, my lifestyle, my money, my looks, people need to get a life and stop judging others.
So it's okay to give us dolls that look real as little girls. Let us play mommy and obsess over them as if they are our own. I had a doll that used its little diapers and I fed it. I have one reborn. they are a lot of fun to play with. im 11, none of my friends know that i love to play and take care of them, but i love it!!! The dolls are beautiful and it takes a lot of time, skill, and some talent to make them. It's not much different than a group of women getting together to make quilts, or any other craft. Rooting the hair and can be tedious. Having others around makes it a social activity. Doll collecting is a very popular hobby, just like train collecting - the kind where trains and track, scenery, et al are minutely designed. Would Dr Phil treat model train enthusiasts as if they are nuts?

That lady who is grossed out over the doll parts in the cabinet--well how does she think dolls start out?? Dolls are not just suddenly "made"; they don't just "appear" as whole pieces (well most of them don't, anyway). But dolls, whether cheap play dolls for little kids, or expensive collector's items, start out as parts (head, torso, limbs) that have to be put together.
Dr. Phil is a biased show, even if they try to make it LOOK objective. I don't really have an opinion on these dolls. Just stumbled on them today, and think they are rather bizarre. Beyond that, the British documentary I on this was completely different. Not so judgy and gimmicky.

While I do respect the artists for their obvious talent and attention to detail, I can't STAND some of the crazy obsessive owners. Also, it's incredibly psychologically damaging in some cases. I know a woman who lost her child... she had a doll made in her dead daughter's image (and had it made sickly looking, too) and named it after her. Now she carries it around with her everywhere like a real child... and we're going on, like, two years of this now. So much for the grieving process.
@Psychchick1 the woman who lost her child is, obviously, not coping with the grieving process in a healthy manner. This does not mean that people who make dolls that look surprisingly accurate are unwell.
Wow, so many people who firmly support this craft. I personally don't understand it, but I guess to each his (or her) own. However, once a person gets attached to an object, such as a reborn doll, it makes others question their mental and emotional state. I see real dolls and reborn dolls as being on the same level. Though both are used for obviously different reasons... the emotional attachment some people have to them is horribly troubling to people who don't have the same issues.
It's one thing to collect them and make them (because they ARE art), but the women who are actually using them as real babies. Walking them and taking them out and stuff, to get the attention, that is just wrong and creepy!

Yea but this isnt really obsession she is a dollmaker, it is clearly a hobby and she enjoys making them and takes pride in what she has made. On theire "doll day" they are all making dolls together. Not much different then them all coming over knitting scarves, baking cakes painting model airplanes, swaping recipies and patterns and having fun doing it

I have one reborn. they are a lot of fun to play with. im 11, none of my friends know that i love to play and take care of them, but i love it!!! I grew up with just me, so i always longed for a brother or sister, but then i found myself loving babies, and now it's reborns. now you have to say they are kind of cute!!!

I don't know about you, but I don't see a syndicated TV program as a legitimate professional setting. He hired a comedian to do his field work, after all.

i have 3 of these. Im 17. Got my first when i turned 8. I saved up all my birthday money to buy them. I obviously know there not real. Im not stupid. They are just something to admire. i use to play with them allll the time when i was little. Now they are just fun to have and i love them.

the art of reborns is about the technique, time and effort put into this hobby these dolls are used for therapy aswell but dr phil seems to think its creepy, well so are people that find comfort in their pets and other items but whatever thats my opinion who am i to judge

The dolls are beautiful and it takes a lot of time, skill, and some talent to make them. It's not much different than a group of women getting together to make quilts, or any other craft. Rooting the hair and can be tedious. Having others around makes it a social activity. Doll collecting is a very popular hobby, just like train collecting - the kind where trains and track, scenery, et al are minutely designed. Would Dr Phil treat model train enthusiasts as if they are nuts?

That lady who is grossed out over the doll parts in the cabinet--well how does she think dolls start out?? Dolls are not just suddenly "made"; they don't just "appear" as whole pieces (well most of them don't, anyway). But dolls, whether cheap play dolls for little kids, or expensive collector's items, start out as parts (head, torso, limbs) that have to be put together.

Dr. Phil is a biased show, even if they try to make it LOOK objective. I don't really have an opinion on these dolls. Just stumbled on them today, and think they are rather bizarre. Beyond that, the British documentary I on this was completely different. Not so judgy and gimmicky.

While I do respect the artists for their obvious talent and attention to detail, I can't STAND some of the crazy obsessive owners. Also, it's incredibly psychologically damaging in some cases. I know a woman who lost her child... she had a doll made in her dead daughter's image (and had it made sickly looking, too) and named it after her. Now she carries it around with her everywhere like a real child... and we're going on, like, two years of this now. So much for the grieving process.

Wow, so many people who firmly support this craft. I personally don't understand it, but I guess to each his (or her) own. However, once a person gets attached to an object, such as a reborn doll, it makes others question their mental and emotional state. I see real dolls and reborn dolls as being on the same level. Though both are used for obviously different reasons... the emotional attachment some people have to them is horribly troubling to people who don't have the same issues.

i think more studies need to be done. i support this very much. when it comes to women and babies, theres this natural instinct/bond/relaxation. this doll tricks the mind.....hence, can one day cure depression and empty nest syndrom....u see those girls on maury tht really want a baby and theyre like 14 yrs old.....maybe they have an imbalance in the brain....lets not forget we are animals. this is a simple cure tht women have created forthemselves and its being looked down by men and youth

Its just kind of strange because they are inanimate figures, made of non-human materials, and yet - people treat them like little humans. There seems to be a sort of affection-replacement thing going on, like when some people have cats and dogs to replace human affection...it is worrying for someone who doesn't follow this trend. I get the whole art form thing but unless your making them to sell they are just DUST COLLECTORS. I mean its like having a tacky but cute novelty item. What the heck do you do with it? If people want to waste their money on dolls that cost hundreds may I suggest giving the money to charity? It would do someone alot of good than another doll or Gucci purse gathering dust in your closet.
