See 'animal echolocation'.. I have seen mine do this too at bugs. I came to the conclusion after watching their ears that it is a type of sonar to locate their target, as sound waves bounce off the bug and back. Usually its a type of clicking noise though.. amazing animals!

BTW man, that band around the cat's neck has to go. Our cat escaped into the woods from a band w/handrope the first day we got her. We thought she was gone forever. Suddenly later in the evening that day she turned up by the house again. I don't think you'll be needing that uncomfortable band anytime soon either.
