I like Gobbi's harsher voice in this role more than a traditional "noble" Verdi baritone. He dares to sing ugly when necessary but he can also be very lyrical and mellifluous. He's definitely my favourite Rigoletto. (And Scarpia. He IS Scarpia.)
Is any one here absolutely sure this is lip-synched? So many of these archival videos are no longer properly synched over time and need restoration. There are dozens precisely like this here on YouTube. Re: Scotto - I think this woman gave us a lot of wonderful vocalism long after 1970! Excerpts here of her Desdemona, Luisa Miller, Boheme, Elisabetta, Faust, the Trittico - just to name a few - are outstanding. Meanwhile, thank you, thank you, CF, for posting these archival gems!
Good to see them in this early clip. Scotto had to be quite young here before the major weight loss and the man choice of taking on parts too heavy for her lyric soprano. I much prefer her earlier work. One would not think in 1959 that she would ever have taken on such things as Gioconda- by then she looked fabulous but the voice suffered, incredibly, however she had a very long career. Grazie- Ernesto
When the history of opera is written fifty to 100 years from now, Renata Scotto will be accorded her proper status as one of the great singing actresses of the past 100 years. Gobbi is a great actor and musician, but the sound his voice just grates on me, always has; I wish Bastianini were singing here!
@billyguns2 Scotto... prior to 1970 was exquisite.. AND she stayed in the coloratura rep.. and did not force her beautiful voice out of its natuarl fach... When she started taking on the heavy roles.. her voice deteriorated and I lost my interest in her.. From this period of time, her Gilda, Violetta, Elvira, Lucia, were absolutely outstanding singing by anyone before or since! She has always been a good actress. I love Gobbi even though he is vocally less than perfect, this is a role that fit
Scotto stupenda ma il modo di cantare di Gobbi é pressoché insopportabile!

she looks a bit like elizabeth montgomery at the beginning.

Premesso che si sta parlando di cantanti da fantascienza da quanto sono bravi ... Ma la mia preferenza rimane per Leo Nucci!

questa scuola del muggiro è una delle invenzioni di Celletti... avrei voluto sentir lui cantare

@occhioverde71 Gobbi urla ecco cosa vuol dire muggito

@leonardovittori1 Where did you hear her Elvira since you appear to be expert on Scotto and her career?

I don't think they were quite so melodramatic when they were not lip synching. No matter. Two greats in their prime.
