"Swan Song" was an unfinished demo that eventually became "Midnight Moonlight" by the Firm once Paul Rodgers came up with some lyrics for it. Otherwise, it's essentially the same.
Very nice slideshow to coincide with (arguably) the best unreleased Zep song ever. When the day comes that JP passes on from this world, I think this song will be the most appropriate to play in his honor.
I think what happened is this: At the Junior High dance, the last song was always Stairway to Heaven, but that's not what the band had intended. When Led Zeppelin finally retired, the last song on the last album was to be Swan Song. THAT'S the song you play at the of the dance, and the start of something beautiful.
Thanks for posting this, I remember reading a Page interview a long time a go where he mentioned a work in progress in response to a question about the label name "swan song". He talked of a piece that would be a dynamically shifting epic like Achilles or Kashmir, but take the concept even further.
It makes me sad listening this unfinished tune. I can almost hear Robert singing.
@kingsergio128 It was something Jimmy was working on at Headly Grange sessions started in late 1973. It just never evolved into a release until The Firm.
i love led zeppelin and green day too. calm down you little fagot.
there is no denying that classic rock is the greatest genre of music but Green Day made and continues to makes great songs. im not saying there better or even anywere close to being as good as Zeppelin... cuz they arnt. but why dont you just open ur eyes, just enjoy music for what it is and stop drawing borders around everything
i feel like this song doesnt get talked about enough... honestly I love it. I think I might go out on the limb and actually say its my favorite by them.
@maryjane27greenday Because you're not exaggerating at all when you say "that's the stupidest comment ever". I wonder where that other guy got the idea that a lot of Zeppelin fans embellish Zeppelin's greatness a little. Congrats you served yourself.
@maryjane27greenday this is by page, but it wasn't a finished song to him so when he joined the firm he took this and it evolved into midnight moonlight or something like that
I know that! but this was recorded in the Zeppelin period, that what I've answered. The song by the firm is Midnight Moonlight, this is The Swan Song, though is the same, isn't.
@maryjane27greenday All I know is, at the liquor store near my house, they have a record player by the entrance/exit, and I saw this vinyl on the turntable... so I looked it up here so I could listen(the radio was on...). Swan song is also a book my uncle-in-law-ish told me to check out a year or 2 ago.
