Not entirely sure of his exact setup, but I've heard several people say he uses an electro-harmonix Big Muff Pi. I use one on my bass and can almost exactly replicate it. Crank the volume, sustain and tone pretty high.

I live in Effingham Illinois. If you drive by it on the interstate there is a Gigantic Cross that over looks our football stadium. Our mascot is the flaming hearts. Inside the town is a very rustic old school movie theater. So I pretty much think they are talking about Effingham IL.

I've lived in Effingham my whole life and I never knew this song existed until today. . . For some reason I can not get over the fact that Ben Folds actually wrote a song about this crumby town. He even mentioned the cross which is how everyone around here knows the town. And its even better that you can tell he is being sarcastic about how great of a place it is.
