please use some level of interpretation.....perhaps inspired by a funny city name, but don't miss the point of such an inspirational song to artists.........
@zela8526 Southeastern Illinois, about an hour from Indiana and an hour and a half from St. Louis, I got a speeding ticket there and got pissed off and started blasting this song afterwards
It sounds like at 1:47 there must be some overdubbing on the final version of the song, cuz on my album there is some background voices and at the end of the section there is a china cymbal. :)
Not entirely sure of his exact setup, but I've heard several people say he uses an electro-harmonix Big Muff Pi. I use one on my bass and can almost exactly replicate it. Crank the volume, sustain and tone pretty high.
What I love about this is that when alot of bands play live, they simply cant replicate the polished version off the album. This is honestly near identical to the album version. So few discrepancies
For some reason I enjoy this version much more than the one found on the actual album. It just seems very raw yet Ben's voice sounds perfect. Love it.
who cares if its a real place? Why do people argue over youtube? Is there really that much lack of excitement in your lives that you have to come on here to be dicks. Who cares if Effington exists or not? Its an amazing song that should be praised not made into an arguement. Grow up!
yay! he wrote this on the way to my college in Normal IL! yeah ISU!!! effington, effingham, same difference. its not like there are a lot of people who live in effingham to get offended
I live in Effingham Illinois. If you drive by it on the interstate there is a Gigantic Cross that over looks our football stadium. Our mascot is the flaming hearts. Inside the town is a very rustic old school movie theater. So I pretty much think they are talking about Effingham IL.
he did't do it on purpose,,, he just wrote the song on stage and remembered the name of the town wrong. he said later he wondered why there wasnt a huge response from the crowd from effington/effingham.
There is a town in Ilinois called Effingham, which is where this song is based on. So before you decide to call US thick, please do your research first.
@quatfro You said Americans are stereotypically stupid, I'm from South Carolina in America, South Carolina happens to be 49th ranked in education. Even I'm vastly more intelligent than you
@quatfro I'm sick of foreign assholes like you. Just because the majority of Americans are dumb asses doesn't mean we all are. In other words, FUCK YOU!
@ZeGuyFly Well, since you started it - Go fuck yourself!
Old story. I can't believe this bullshit is still going on, I really didn't care that much in the first place and I really couldn't give a fuck now. If it was so obviously Effingham, why didn't he just leave it like that? It rolls off the tongue just as smoothly and would be far more appropriate to the town he was singing about - it makes no sense...it's like writing a song about Swansea and calling it Cardiff!!!
I've lived in Effingham my whole life and I never knew this song existed until today. . . For some reason I can not get over the fact that Ben Folds actually wrote a song about this crumby town. He even mentioned the cross which is how everyone around here knows the town. And its even better that you can tell he is being sarcastic about how great of a place it is.
This song completely owns me. The first time I heard it, I fell in love. Thank you sooooo much for posting this. I've been searching everywhere for a good video of this to show to my friends.
LOVE IT!! Omg. I live in Effingham!! (Mistakenly called effington) this is awesomee! We are a tiny town, but we have the worlds largest cross, the 2009 United states teacher of the year and now a song by ben folds. Awesome. We are moving up in the world. Haha
Is it really as wonderful as the song makes it out to be?This has become my theme song ,as of late, and I really want to get the hell outta Orange Park FL.
I drove through Effingham on my way to Indy last year... Couldn't believe there was an actual town (with a water tower no less) called Effimgham... Nice.
Someday I will live in Effington.

I don't think this is the recording you hear on the album. Pretty sure this was just for this video. I don't think Ben has recorded live since WEAEA.
