What is the difference between you buying yourself a loaf of bread and your state buying one for you? Besides the fact that you pay the government to buy the loaf of bread, nothing. You consume it either way, and both you and the state currently pay the embedded cost of income capital gain, corporate income and other taxes.
Exempting government consumption will cause every one will ask the government to give them everything.
In short, the FairTax eliminates the middle man. Corporations only pass their income taxes to the consumer, by raising the prices. Eliminate the corporate income tax, and the price will come down to allow just 5 percent profit, due to competition. Replace this with the FairTax, and the price will come right back where it was. Prices won't change (maybe slightly), take home will rise, the fed budget won't change. Nothing will change except you'll never handle another tax form again.

From the "Fair" Tax site's own data, the percentage of income paid in tax will be around 30% for the poor and lower middleclasses (even with rebate), and wil drop to 13% or below for the top 10%. The top 1% currently pay an effective rate of about 20-28% in federal taxes. The FT, as shown by it's own data, would drop their rate to 13% or less.
Since the supporters' state that it collects the same amount of taxes as the current system, the poor/midclasses will have to pay more than now.

As for materials being taxed 30%, just how do you get to that? By taxing on consumption only, and not taxing income, you would draw money to the U.S. economy from foreign markets because of the tax benefit of doing so. Like Swiss banks now.

Further, the ultra wealthy who live off of capital gains on their stocks, bonds, or mutual funds only pay a 15% tax currently. Under this system, all people would pay taxes based on what they spend, meaning that the luxury yacht club would be in for higher taxes than the guy buying a used focus (no tax on used goods under fairtax). Additionally, it will create an incentive for Americans to invest and save.
"The working poor" would highly benefit from this. They get their WHOLE paycheck, not 80% of it. Fairtax also brings jobs back to America. To maintain a business you have to pay exorbitant taxes here in America compared to some offshore country. Our businesses go to other countries to set up hq because they pay less taxes there. With no tax, all american businesses + other foreign businesses thus abolishing our current horrible tax system and opening thousands of new jobs.

Prices do not rise 20-25% where is your research on this? There has been tens of millions have been spent researching this. Just look at the EFFECTIVE tax rate on individuals making under FPS. They pay in the negative in taxes.

But if you had read the book you would know that a little something called competition will make the prices plummet again. This has already been proven in the airline business. The government gave the airlines tax cuts so they upped their prices. All it took for the prices to go back down was one airline keeping its prices low and stealing all the business. This will occur in all fields and reduce the prices.
Competition exists NOW, and there is absolutely nothing in ADDING a 20-30% tax on every sale that can or will lead to new "competiton".. otherwise businesses would be doing that trimming NOW. Adding a new cost that CANNOT be competively trimmed will not create competition, it wil create huge black markets avoiding that addition.

Once their prices go from 10$ to 12$, they will reduce their price back to 10$ and get all the business forcing the other companies to do the same. I think I see the problem-- you are under the impression that the FT rate was ascertained from business savings by not having to send in taxes for employees. No. The FT rate was arrived at by taking the tax base (all those sales that would be taxed, including doctor visits and plumbers) and seeing what rate would be need to bring in the same revenues as now. And that rate is estimated to be a 30-40% sales tax.
@Mootsterdotcom For example, let's think gasoline-- the %age of the cost of gasoline that is wages is at best 20-30% (likely much much less, but I am making a point). Of those wages, maybe 25% is fed taxes. So at best case-- prices go up 30%-40% with the sales tax, then reduced 8% by business savings. for a 22%-32% price increase on gas. Overnight.

The report shows that just to replace the income tax alone, a sales tax would have to at least 35% -- to replace all the other taxes too -- far higher, up to 89%.
Of course that assumes an 89% sales tax would not destroy much of our consumer based economy -- which it would.
The GDP includes government spending, cancer treatment, rent, car insurance, utility bills.. It includes virtually everything.

In short, the FairTax eliminates the middle man. Corporations only pass their income taxes to the consumer, by raising the prices. Eliminate the corporate income tax, and the price will come down to allow just 5 percent profit, due to competition. Replace this with the FairTax, and the price will come right back where it was. Prices won't change (maybe slightly), take home will rise, the fed budget won't change. Nothing will change except you'll never handle another tax form again.

From the "Fair" Tax site's own data, the percentage of income paid in tax will be around 30% for the poor and lower middleclasses (even with rebate), and wil drop to 13% or below for the top 10%. The top 1% currently pay an effective rate of about 20-28% in federal taxes. The FT, as shown by it's own data, would drop their rate to 13% or less.
Since the supporters' state that it collects the same amount of taxes as the current system, the poor/midclasses will have to pay more than now.

1) If enacted, what would this mean with respect to my current savings? (answer: it 'd mean you'd be taxed on your savings when you spend it-- even if you already paid income/SocSec taxes on it--sorry grandma).
2) Would stock sales be taxed?(If yes- market collapse overnight ..if no, the wealthy buy stock and pay no taxes for years, shifting the burden onto the middles with a necessary higher sales tax rate)

@FairTaxisaLie Oh, sorry, my bad. You're right about capital gains... kinda. The average Joe who doesn't have a lot in savings receives a form 1099 which then counts as income on his tax returns, not capital gains. The money is still taxed though.
As for materials being taxed 30%, just how do you get to that? By taxing on consumption only, and not taxing income, you would draw money to the U.S. economy from foreign markets because of the tax benefit of doing so. Like Swiss banks now.

A person who buys a new "mansion" after the instatement of the fair tax would pay the tax on his/her purchase. So based on 10,000,000; he/she would pay ~ 3,000,000 in tax. I would venture to guess that that is more than the average person stands to spend on taxes over their entire life. What is that again about how the rich wouldn't pay their share?

Further, the ultra wealthy who live off of capital gains on their stocks, bonds, or mutual funds only pay a 15% tax currently. Under this system, all people would pay taxes based on what they spend, meaning that the luxury yacht club would be in for higher taxes than the guy buying a used focus (no tax on used goods under fairtax). Additionally, it will create an incentive for Americans to invest and save.

"The working poor" would highly benefit from this. They get their WHOLE paycheck, not 80% of it. Fairtax also brings jobs back to America. To maintain a business you have to pay exorbitant taxes here in America compared to some offshore country. Our businesses go to other countries to set up hq because they pay less taxes there. With no tax, all american businesses + other foreign businesses thus abolishing our current horrible tax system and opening thousands of new jobs.

So the working poor keep 0-10% or so more in salary and the wealthy keep 15-30% more, and prices go up 20-25%. Guess which group is gettin the shaft.

Prices do not rise 20-25% where is your research on this? There has been tens of millions have been spent researching this. Just look at the EFFECTIVE tax rate on individuals making under FPS. They pay in the negative in taxes.

But if you had read the book you would know that a little something called competition will make the prices plummet again. This has already been proven in the airline business. The government gave the airlines tax cuts so they upped their prices. All it took for the prices to go back down was one airline keeping its prices low and stealing all the business. This will occur in all fields and reduce the prices.

Competition exists NOW, and there is absolutely nothing in ADDING a 20-30% tax on every sale that can or will lead to new "competiton".. otherwise businesses would be doing that trimming NOW. Adding a new cost that CANNOT be competively trimmed will not create competition, it wil create huge black markets avoiding that addition.

Once their prices go from 10$ to 12$, they will reduce their price back to 10$ and get all the business forcing the other companies to do the same. Right now if businesses did that, they would lose too much money. They would have no guarantee that every other industry would do the same.

I think I see the problem-- you are under the impression that the FT rate was ascertained from business savings by not having to send in taxes for employees. No. The FT rate was arrived at by taking the tax base (all those sales that would be taxed, including doctor visits and plumbers) and seeing what rate would be need to bring in the same revenues as now. And that rate is estimated to be a 30-40% sales tax.

Of those wages, maybe 25% is fed taxes. So at best case-- prices go up 30%-40% with the sales tax, then reduced 8% by business savings. for a 22%-32% price increase on gas. Overnight.

Let me put this simply, try to follow...If you repeal the 35% income tax (soon to be 39%) that some Americans are paying the federal government, then you put 35% of their income back into their pocket. IF they choose to spend this they get taxed 23%....OR they could invest in American jobs and economy, increasing America's production capacity and providing more jobs at NO tax...this tax is beneficial because it encourages saving and investment rather than borrow and spend. Andrew of course there is a source -- go read it. The Joint Committee on Taxation did a report at President Bush's personal request (because he had heard so much from Fairtax believers)
The report shows that just to replace the income tax alone, a sales tax would have to at least 35% -- to replace all the other taxes too -- far higher, up to 89%.
Of course that assumes an 89% sales tax would not destroy much of our consumer based economy -- which it would.

The point behind this is that the progressive taxation that Americans are exposed to encourages unproductive behaviors and punishes productive ones. People should be encouraged to save and invest, not borrow and spend...this bill would encourage responsible consumer behavior in a time when entitlements are running out of control.

Sure you can have a national sales tax to replace all others - but not at 23% dumb fuch.
Fairtax basic lie is that it can can collect huge revenue FROM taxing the government. They had to pretend this shit, or admit the tax rate would be 60-80%.

Second, The fair tax ELIMINATES all federal taxes already embedded in all goods and services sold at the retail (roughly 23%). So, the price of these goods and services will go down 23%. The 23% fair tax is then collected at the point of sale, thus, NO CHANGE in the price you pay right now, all federal taxes included. It is REVENUE NEUTRAL.
Read the book and understand it before you spout off and display your stupidity.

Our current income tax system is so bad that our own goverment doesn't understand it. There have been numerous lawsuits where the IRS gave people incorrect information about how they should handle their income taxes because the goverment doesn't even fully understand their own mess they have created with the IRS.

they dont scream now and pay a much higher rate than those at the bottem. Fair would tax everyone the same...whether it the same rate or on the same purchases fair is fair. Our current system seeks not to fund the federal government (a horrible investment in and of itself in most cases) but rather to redistribute income from those who choose to earn more to those who choose not to earn as much.
