It's not the ideal situation - I'll give you that - but it's the card that she's been dealt. Caring for a child with additional needs is difficult at times but it is the most joyous thing I or anyone in my shoes can do. Smiles speak volumes.
@JennnGilmore Thank you JennnGilmore, Most people just don't understand, as they say you really have to walk in our shoes for an hour or so. Jarrod has taken a turn for the worse. Another doctor harmed him by shoving a feeding tube into his lung, thereby puncturing and collapsing his lung. Then a piece of tube stayed in his lung and he ended up having major surgery to remove the piece of tube and needed a tracheostomy. He's amazing though, he has already learned to make sounds around the trach!!

One thing that most people don't realize, is that Jarrod breaths on his own. So we don't use "extraordinary measures" to keep him alive. But it is still hard because even the simplist chores like dressing and bathing have to be done for him and with medical awareness and care so we don't make him sick or in pain. @85Heaven Thank you Heaven, Jarrod is now almost 18! All sorts of things have changed. All the same stuff that any teenager goes through except he can't move or talk, so we have new challenges. He has to get a new wheelchair now and he also needs a new hoyer lift, so we can get him in and out of bed. @blessedmommy73 Yes, Jarrod is doing pretty well. He has lost weight, which is great for his breathing!! I discovered, what the doctors and pharmacists didn't notice, that Jarrod was getting hundreds of calories of sugar syrup in all his medicines!!! He is completely fed through a tube and therefore can't taste the medicine so all we do is dissolve tablets or capsules in water. He has lost about 25 pounds and is a lot easier to handle. I hope you have been able to at least get a lift for Jarrod that can get him to the bathtub...he would surely LOVE that!

they took my mom off of life support after 3 days, she would have been in the same condition after a brain aneurysm. She would have never put that type of burden on us and was animate about not keeping her on life support if it ever came down to it. It kills me to think she may have gotten better or even functioned at any level and that I would never find out. Seeing your sons condition reminds me of her and the god awful task it has put you through.

@penniesfromheavon We did sue the doctor and won. In New Hampshire we have tort reform so the settlement was limited to an amount that doesn't even pay for the necessities. I've never gotten any money for Jarrod through this sight, but I really appreciate when people commit to pray for Jarrod and us. @SnowOwI Dear snowowl, It's kind of hard to explain, but , for one thing, Jarrod can't swallow at all. In a nursing home they would lie him on his back and then he would aspirate ( suck in ) fluid and drown. I mean, that would be extreme negligence that would cost him his life, and they would be sued for every penny they own and I'd think criminal charges would be held against them. @SnowOwI Dear snowowl, Your questions don't bother me at all. I'm glad you care enough to ask. My experience is that in an institutional setting, no one is really responsible. As a matter of fact, we would have to sign papers that we understand that in certain circumstances, such as snowstorms and blackouts, they can't be held responsible for "mistakes" or short term lapses in care. During the ice storm we had last March, 5 people on oxygen in their homes died in the blackout. (next page)
@SnowOwI Page 2, During the blackout that insued, nurses couldn't get to work, so the same nurses that had already worked one or more shifts keep on working. There is no way that patient care wouldn't suffer. In our home we take turns caring for Jarrod. Even though our ability to take good care would go down, we still know the things that have to be done to keep Jarrod safe and well. New nurses wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to keep him safe and it wouldn't be their fault. Thanks Lisa

I begged for cesarean and the doctor, that I had to trust, wouldn't do one. Also Jarrod communicates through different vocal sounds and confirms that he wants to live. The bond between child and mother is one that goes past all words. However the "medical" part of me disagrees with the "human" part. As I don't believe in a God or Higher Power I wouldn't say that this was part of your Gods plan for you and for your son. It was gross misconduct on the doctors part, and tort cases never go well in the medical field, as I'm sure your aware of. Have you thought about what is going to happen to your son when you and your husband pass?

You mention once or twice you have care in the home then you down play it. People should be aware based on Medicaid and model waiver hours you have help you are not paying for. One of the reasons I left home health was that I got sick of watching women like you live off of the kids they insisted on keeping alive no matter how awful it was for the child. No one else would be allowed to run up an 8000 bill w/electric. Moving you out of your house would never happen no matter how much you owe.
The MRIs you are talking about don't work on flat-line EEGs which is what, from your own description, your son is. And 15% isn't much. Those few are the ones that had a normal brain and went into a coma or suffered brain damage later. You have the fantasy world you are in and now, after winning a lawsuit, you want others to pay for the upkeep of that fantasy, even as it tortures your son.

You are strangely silent about questions regarding a lawsuit with the doctor or hospital where your son was born. People have sued for less then this. I do agree with you that pulling feeding tubes and fluid are cruel; however, you could not pursue things like antibiotics for pneumonia, etc. You and I both know there are ways, non-euthanasia ways, you could let him go.
@jcbartha I have explained several times that we won a law suit very fast, cause it was cut and dried. We had video of the whole thing and the doctor clearly destroyed our son. He was killed but then the doctors revived him!! NH has tort reform, they have limited what a jury can award for malpractice. We didn't even get enough to take minimum care of Jarrod. I think its disgusting that the doctor refused to allow you to have a c-section. If I were you I would sue the hospital for allowing your beautiful son to get into such a bad way (I don't mean that horribly at all, so I'm sorry if it comes across that way), and for wanting you to starve and dehydrate him. It makes me sick to think that doctors can be so cruel, after all aren't they supposed to help people? Your son is clearly a fighter, and you should continue doing everthing you can to help him

@85Heaven Thank you Heaven, Jarrod is now almost 18! All sorts of things have changed. All the same stuff that any teenager goes through except he can't move or talk, so we have new challenges. He has to get a new wheelchair now and he also needs a new hoyer lift, so we can get him in and out of bed. He needs a bathroom with a shower and a therapy tub to loosen his contracted and painful muscles. Please keep up the prayers. My friend is trying to fundraise for the room. Lisa Itse, Jarrod's mom.

@blessedmommy73 Yes, Jarrod is doing pretty well. He has lost weight, which is great for his breathing!! I discovered, what the doctors and pharmacists didn't notice, that Jarrod was getting hundreds of calories of sugar syrup in all his medicines!!! He is completely fed through a tube and therefore can't taste the medicine so all we do is dissolve tablets or capsules in water. He has lost about 25 pounds and is a lot easier to handle. He looks fantastic by the way, you are obviously doing a wonderful job caring for him. Most of the kids I have seen like Jarrod, parents do the bare minimum. I hope you have been able to at least get a lift for Jarrod that can get him to the bathtub...he would surely LOVE that!

why is his oxygen tubing in his mouth rather than in his nose? otherwise..I'm so sorry to hear about what you are going through. I'm an RN and if you lived close by i would offer you free nursing care..but unfortunately I'm in Canada. I have worked with many children like Jarrod, and they were the light of my life. Thank You for making this video, and God Bless you. I wish i could help financially, but we are raising 3 special needs children with little support and no funding for them...so hard.

@blessedmommy73 Thank you so much for your concern! Jarrod tends to be a mouth breather so sometimes he just gets more oxygen that way, but it changes day to day. I think you are amazing raising 3 special needs kids! Are they your own natural children or are they foster children? I am also very sick with auto immune system diseases, so I'm barely able to care for Jarrod. The state has been cutting necessary medical supplies. very stressful. they took my mom off of life support after 3 days, she would have been in the same condition after a brain aneurysm. She would have never put that type of burden on us and was animate about not keeping her on life support if it ever came down to it. It kills me to think she may have gotten better or even functioned at any level and that I would never find out. Seeing your sons condition reminds me of her and the god awful task it has put you through.

@penniesfromheavon We did sue the doctor and won. In New Hampshire we have tort reform so the settlement was limited to an amount that doesn't even pay for the necessities. I've never gotten any money for Jarrod through this sight, but I really appreciate when people commit to pray for Jarrod and us. If Jarrod went into a nursing home, as the last person suggested, he would be dead within a few days. We keep Jarrod at home cause he wants to be here with his family. Thanks, Lisa, Jarrod's mom

In a nursing home they would lie him on his back and then he would aspirate ( suck in ) fluid and drown. I mean, that would be extreme negligence that would cost him his life, and they would be sued for every penny they own and I'd think criminal charges would be held against them. @SnowOwI Dear snowowl, Your questions don't bother me at all. I'm glad you care enough to ask. My experience is that in an institutional setting, no one is really responsible. As a matter of fact, we would have to sign papers that we understand that in certain circumstances, such as snowstorms and blackouts, they can't be held responsible for "mistakes" or short term lapses in care. During the ice storm we had last March, 5 people on oxygen in their homes died in the blackout. (next page)

There is no way that patient care wouldn't suffer. In our home we take turns caring for Jarrod. Even though our ability to take good care would go down, we still know the things that have to be done to keep Jarrod safe and well. New nurses wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to keep him safe and it wouldn't be their fault. Thanks Lisa

Lots of kids will hold on for as long as they can, out of fear for their parent or parents. Some older kids I have cared for have told me as much. I begged for cesarean and the doctor, that I had to trust, wouldn't do one. Also Jarrod communicates through different vocal sounds and confirms that he wants to live. I have told him that if he wants to go be with Jesus then we will be alright. Some people just have a very strong will to survive. We have never used extraordinary measures

We have seen "normal" people's lives changed when they meet or get to know Jarrod. He is extraordinarily brave and loving. When you meet him you learn to put things into proper priority. The bond between child and mother is one that goes past all words. However the "medical" part of me disagrees with the "human" part. As I don't believe in a God or Higher Power I wouldn't say that this was part of your Gods plan for you and for your son. It was gross misconduct on the doctors part, and tort cases never go well in the medical field, as I'm sure your aware of. Have you thought about what is going to happen to your son when you and your husband pass?

You mention once or twice you have care in the home then you down play it. People should be aware based on Medicaid and model waiver hours you have help you are not paying for. One of the reasons I left home health was that I got sick of watching women like you live off of the kids they insisted on keeping alive no matter how awful it was for the child. No one else would be allowed to run up an 8000 bill w/electric. Moving you out of your house would never happen no matter how much you owe.

The MRIs you are talking about don't work on flat-line EEGs which is what, from your own description, your son is. And 15% isn't much. Those few are the ones that had a normal brain and went into a coma or suffered brain damage later. You have the fantasy world you are in and now, after winning a lawsuit, you want others to pay for the upkeep of that fantasy, even as it tortures your son.

I didn't go all the way back but in the messages I saw asking you, you didn't say you'd won. You say on one hand his brain was destroyed then you talk about him making responses. He's become your imaginary friend; something I saw alot of when I was a nurse. Actually, as a diabetic I've had both pneumonia and cellulites. No comparison BTW. Before antibiotics they used to call pneumonia "the old man's friend" r/t the peaceful death. Jackie Onasis chose it. Be kind, unselfish, and let him go.

@jcbartha Dear jcbartha, Since you say you were a nurse then you should have kept up on current technology!! Live MRIs have proven that at least 15% of people, thought to be in "persistent vegetative state" or "coma", are really in "locked in syndrome". Just because you can't understand them doesn't mean they don't understand you. I pity the people that you supposedly "cared" for, because, obviously "care" had nothing to do with it!! You are strangely silent about questions regarding a lawsuit with the doctor or hospital where your son was born. People have sued for less then this. I do agree with you that pulling feeding tubes and fluid are cruel; however, you could not pursue things like antibiotics for pneumonia, etc. You and I both know there are ways, non-euthanasia ways, you could let him go.

@jcbartha I have explained several times that we won a law suit very fast, cause it was cut and dried. We had video of the whole thing and the doctor clearly destroyed our son. He was killed but then the doctors revived him!! NH has tort reform, they have limited what a jury can award for malpractice. We didn't even get enough to take minimum care of Jarrod. I believe that not treating an infection is more cruel than drowning. Have you experienced the pain of pneumonia or celulitus? Lisa Itse

I think its disgusting that the doctor refused to allow you to have a c-section. If I were you I would sue the hospital for allowing your beautiful son to get into such a bad way (I don't mean that horribly at all, so I'm sorry if it comes across that way), and for wanting you to starve and dehydrate him. It makes me sick to think that doctors can be so cruel, after all aren't they supposed to help people? Your son is clearly a fighter, and you should continue doing everthing you can to help him

you say you read the messages to your son jarrod so i would like to say that there are people out there in the big wide world, who's heart you have touched with your bravery , and who are thinking of you. and you must be such a strong willed young man, god bless you.
and to you jarrods mother, you are one amazing lady, the fact that you have the strength to not only love and care for your son, but have the courage to show your plight to the world and not afraid to ask for help is inspirational

@lisaitse i was just so touched by your videos, i got to this one through a susan boyle contest , and i saw your video audition for that, can i just say as a fellow singer that you have a beautiful voice, and i am sure jarrod loves listening to you.
i cant imagine the suffering jarrod goes through, and that you as a mother goes through everyday, seeing any child in pain is unbearable let alone your own.
