i have sprained my supraspinatus one and a half month ago and i still have pain when I lay down on my sprained shoulder and when i bench it hurts next day... what do you recommend?
I have a tear of the supraspinatus tendon (partial-thickness tear, 30% tear that is 1.5cm). The inflammation has largely subsided and I can begin strengthening exercises. Can I do this one, or will that cause the tear to grow?
Hi Massageceu. I'm a keen free style swimmer. The MRI says that I have a discrete intrasubstance tear of the supraspinatus. My surgeon says that he can't operate because the outer layers are intact but also that the tear won't heal !!! He says that it only can become worse.
So do you think these excercises are helpfull or have you had cases of intrasubstance tears with full recovery (by strenghtening and eccentric excercises) ? I hope so. Because this impasse is very frustrating. thx Tom
I have tendinosis in my left supraspinatus from weightlifting and i've been resting for 4.5 months. It's gotten a lot better so i'm looking into exercises. Should I do the eccentric exercises every day for rehab? Is 3 sets of this 1 exercise enough or are there other exercises I can do? Are you raising your arms to the side or slightly in front of you and to the side?
The empty cup grip brings the supraspinatus into contact with a ligament in the front and top of the shoulder joint. This causes chafing and inflammation and is a frequent cause of supraspinatus tendon breakdown in the first place! Therefore, turn the "cup" up when strengthening the muscle!
@massageceu Thanks for the tip. A while back a sports doctor told me to do empty cans in front of the torso @ about a 45% angle, but I actuall found these painful. I just went through a couple of sets now with you, and everything feels warm and good. Do you have any idea why empty or half full is sometimes recommended? (just in general, not in my case, of course.)
I had a cortisone shot in my s-spinatus tendon. (around the tendon area). I heard that cortisone doesnt just mask the pain ,but also heals the tendinitis. Is that true?
corticosteroids have a high possibility in rupturing the tendon...it has been proven in clinical trials....besides strengthening which is not always guaranteed for full recovery, the ultimate option is arthoscopy and tendon repair
hi ,.2 times i damaged rotator ,.finally had surgery ,.i still in big pains,.i thought that swimming would be the most benefical , i just have spent a fortune on this injury,.for the weight suggestions thanks mike
You need to talk to your Dr. about your MRI results. Is the tear complete? Does it include the infraspinatus? Is surgery required? At some point a strengthening protocol will be vital, but you need to get some guidance from your physician on this! Good luck! Doug
works well - persevere

I saw an ortho and he wanted to jump to surgery right off. Can I get your comments on exercises to therapy I can do BEFORE deciding to do the surgery

Why don't you lift the weights using the empty cup grip?
