  • i like how the guy at 3:45 totally proves to the interviewer how lame of a journalist he is by using reverse psychology

  • i think we can all agree that elliott smith is way better than modest mouse.

  • So tired of hearing about the "old shit" and "new shit" and "selling out". Isaac changed a lot, and so has MM's music. The band is clearly in a different place right now and enjoying success, which is a part of doing the whole damn thing, and that has brought a bunch of people who might have felt alone together, and otherwise not heard of MM here. Feel what you want but if you're so vapid to assume ALL the 'new shit' is bad then you never deserved to listen to Modest Mouse in the first place.

  • @AtHomePregnancyTest haha, where did you see a comment about someone disliking their new shit. I agree with you but i just feel like you're debating against yourself.

  • So many indie rock legends in this clip. The Pacific Northwest music scene in the late 80s-90s was second to none.

  • I laughed so hard when he gets the matches, Isaac tells the clerk, it's kinda hard to smoke beer without em'... love that

  • Beat Happening Rules!

  • I would love to hangout with Elliot and Isaac haha. Im not into coke so i would probably be left out of their partying

  • oh, elliott :);;

  • Early tapes? somebody fill me in.

  • @thincotex tube fruit all smiles and chocolate. and uncle bunnyfaces.

  • calvin johnson is one of the only peoples whose opinion didn't sound corny as fuck lol

  • he asks the same question in every interview

  • god i love calvin.....

  • damn. i wish beer was 1.07 here...

  • ahh :( elliot smith looks so sad. r.i.p.

  • 2:23 Halo Benders.

  • I only watched Elliotts interview. . that motherfucker is infectious.

  • whoa! no way. 5:36 -Jeremiah Green was also in Red Stars Theory? i read about them on Pandora. their stuff isnt bad. and in the 'similar artists' list are names of bands that i'v never heard of heh

  • I love how over the top awkward this interviewer makes things.

Like @ 4:57 shoving that camera up into his face in an already awkward interview. Hahahah

  • soon the chain reaction started in the parking lot

  • I came here to watch a modest mouse documentary, now i'm back to being obsessed with Elliott. Shit.

  • 3:06 -is that the band themselves write there in that room? Judy, Brock and Green?

  • @92soothsayer No...just Brock.

  • ELLIOTT FUCKING SMITH GODDAMN

  • Elliott fucking Smith! what a hero!

  • @alex93metallica i think you mean "an hero"

  • @OfficerMcGroist nahh, i think he means "a hero"

  • @jackslasho elliot smith became an hero

  • @OfficerMcGroist dont you use "an" when the next word starts with a vowel (in most cases at least)

  • @jackslasho i know dude... look up "become an hero" it means you killed yourself

  • @OfficerMcGroist ahk, well cheers, learn somethin new everyday

  • @OfficerMcGroist What, when he didn't kill himself? That's not how it works.

  • @ElWeasle he died of a drug overdose, same thing bro. he became an hero.

  • @OfficerMcGroist What part of 'stabbed twice in the heart' is a drug overdose? Psssht.

  • @ElWeasle Oh you're right i had him confused with someone else. but yeah, people think they might have been self inflicted stab wounds, in other words, an hero.

  • he even left a suicide note for chrissakes.

  • That Calvin Johnson guy is a smug douche. He never made any good albums either with beat Happening (dire voice, lacking melody) or solo. It's ironic cuz MM would not only release two of their best albums but also get huge.

  • @MrTrinklied i don't think that's fair. many people will tell you that those lacking melodies and offbeat singing, chanting sounds are what makes beat happening really beautiful. i would be a sad thing if he never made those albums, for example. it isn't for everyone, obviously. anyway i don't know why the name calling was appropriate.

  • ooh..i heart calvin so hard.

  • LOL @ Calvin Johnson's beanie, all pointed up

  • rip elliot

  • I was eating a sandwich when Isaac Brock was eating a sandwich.

  • @ccrraazzyypoop You must be the next Isaac.

  • @ccrraazzyypoop

    HIS BLOOD RUNS INSIDE YOU

TAKE UP YOUR THRONE AS THE NEXT ISAAC BROCK

  • @ ~ 5:55 i agree, early tapes are my favs as well. like he says very exciting and spontaneous stuff.

  • First saw this back before I knew much about Elliott Smith. I now enjoy the part with him in it sooo much more.

  • i need subtitles for this haha

  • at 5:49

did he say i think everyone should die?

  • @AberhamA No, he said " I feel like everyone should uh.... try to find the earlier tapes..."

  • Everyone smoked back then , ha.

  • Shucks,

    RIP Elliott Smith

  • 4:00 calvin johnson is an awesome dude

  • Calvin Johnson is a fucking LEGEND

  • 13 years ago...nutter butters were 49 cents

  • at 7:40 do those people even know who their walkin around with in a store

  • elliot died of leukemia </3

  • @andimhisfriendjesus Nah that fool stabbed himself

  • @andimhisfriendjesus and @RusselMuttly.

I have no idea where you got leukemia from..but he officially died of two stabs to the chest. It wasn't really decided whether it was suicide or not, but he was often depressed and whatnot..

but he was a fantastic musician. RIP man <33

  • @soufHYWRD94544 sorry yeah, confusing him with someone else Isaac associated with

  • @andimhisfriendjesus

    Elliott Smith?

No, he stabbed himself two times in the chest

  • @Randazzo1234 hey its not actually concluded. they found defensive wounds on his arms, and the stab wounds are inconsistent with self infliction. Plus his then girlfriend claims she locked herself in the bathroom when he was stabbed, heard a scream, then came out and found him with a knife in his chest. sooo yeah its actually not confirmed a homicide or suicide....

  • i bet they new they were going to hit it BIG wit that album

  • calvin johnson really just seems like hes being a dick to the camera guy

  • The guy at 8:25 was probably stoked when he found out he gave isaac brock a cigarette before he and modest mouse went big haha

  • she was goin' with a cinematographer, never knew that he was really a pornographer...

  • Can I have some matches? It's hard to smoke beer without em. HAHAHA funny shit.

  • Comment removed

  • It's called "Lounge".

  • dude, buy some of their records and stop asking questions.

  • @musicforchewfaygs I asked one question douchebag not multiple questions. Fuckin moron I highly doubt you can walk into a music store and still be able to find LCW

  • haha, "do you have matches? cant smoke beer without 'em"

  • 1997 was a camera shy year

  • elliott looked so gone. poor thing must have been so scared.

  • Calvin is pretty damn wierd

  • Comment removed

  • Most likely he's referring to the Parasite Sessions Isaac did in '93/'94.

  • HALO BENDERS POSTER! listen to them...calvin and doug martsch

  • horrible interviewer. the awkwardness kills me

  • totally. he talks to all these awesome musicians and asks them all the same stupid question. watch everyone of their faces drop when says "how would you compare your still of music making with theirs?" what a dbag. no good musician or artist wants to answer that question

  • The interviewer asks a question, the person answers it, and then he creepily leaves the camera on them, for like a solid 2 minutes of awkward silence.

  • hahaha.... "..It's hard to smoke beer without em'"

  • When Calvin's talking about Isaac's old recordings, is that those 30 second songs on Sad Sappy Sucker?

  • Yup!

  • I wish this interviewer would ask different questions once in a while.

  • @simulator79 What? The whole point of a documentary is to explore and compare different peoples views on the same topic.

  • R.I.P Elliot Smith

  • these interviews are so awesome! its great to finally see how the guys act when not performing and when they were young!

  • Intervewer needs to understand interviews better

  • All these interviews don't really go anywhere.

    Do you like modest mouse?

    Yeah it's cool.

What did you think of the last tour?

    It was alright.

  • elliot smith was just pissed about that question...

  • awe elliott so looks uncomfortable!!

  • that elliot clip is creepy. :D

  • this was very insightful, they're all so young..

  • I wonder what Elliott was looking at.

  • probably a big red balloon

  • "if they stick with it, they could go somewhere"

  • I dig the Halo Benders poster at 2:29.

  • Tis. I think that it is the "Don't Tell Me Now" album cover. That's my favorite Halo Bender's album.

  • Calvin is a dickface.

  • Sounds like it, but the interviewer didn't give him much of a chance to sound interesting. It was an awkward conversation for sure. But Calvin can play some music. Check out Beat Happening if you haven't before.

  • Bah R.I.P Elliott. (this whole documentary is gold)

  • It's interesting to watch back when isaac had to borrow money to buy a 40oz...I doubt he has that problem anymore.

  • 40oz? i'm, pretty sure that's a 22oz

  • Is that really the issue?

  • haha

  • or maybe he was milking the guy?

  • Pinochio dove of the cliff and swam away

  • 8:10 Can have some matches. Its hard to smoke beer without them. Hahaha.... :) Isaac is fucking halarious.

  • I would love to hear those early Isaac Brock tapes!!

  • Part of it is the last half of Sad Sappy Sucker, if you're interested.

  • calvin seems like a wiseman of a movie or something, loved his stuff with beat happening, and the halo benders, and dub narcotic.......

  • can i get some matches....its hard to smoke a beer without them. haha.

  • Calvin Johnson rules

  • calvin johnson´s bit is so hilarious

  • 6:25 the old Deschutes Brewery beer sixer. Which one is that?

  • I wish elliott were still around.

  • me too.

  • me too....

    rip elliot

  • alot of people i know don't like his music unless its a certain time...i don't find it depressing at all, any time is good, it's beautiful.

  • This guy Calvin Johnson seems like an annoying dickhead to me. maybe he's just trying to be funny, but he comes off as a dick.

  • Elliott Smith, sweet.

  • What bands has he been in?

  • Elliott Smith was in the band Heatmiser, but after that he started making his own music as an indie-rock kinda guy. He was nominated for an academy award for his song "Miss Misery." His music has changed my life and the lives of many others, but not many people can appreciate it. You should check him out, he's really good.

  • its hard to smoke beer without em...

  • "if they stick with it, they're gonna go somewhere"

  • anyone know what he said when he bumped that cig off that old guy?

  • yeah not quite sure, its really hard to hear, if only the internet had its own eq... but i think he said "it's a bad thing, sometime, sometime, thats all im askin for from you is a cigarette... and when they do tell em to tell me, cuz then i'll know to buy some." i'm not sure who "they" are, probably the store he pointed at.

  • boy i sure do like me some modest mouse

  • I'm tired of hearing about "sellouts". What does that even mean? That they arent' teenagers anymore? That they aren't driving around in an old van playing small venues? Success does not equal selling out. If they had traded their values for money, they would have sold out. If they hadn't gone for the money when they had the chance, they'd be flipping burgers by now. Enough with the sellout talk.

  • when used right the term sellout has nothing to do with success. in regards to modest mouse it is used when comparing the realness of there earlier recordings, emotional intensity of the lyrics/music, and the basic recording style, to the new modest mouse sound which is more processed, lacking the realness and originality of the early recording (moon and antartica and before) now they try to make hits and get radio play and sound too produced. if thats ur thing then I guess they're not sell outs

  • @Crackhouts Holy FUCK YOU BLEW MY MIND.

  • @Crackhouts People are forgetting true meanings of words and phrases now. They just don't know the meaning of "sell out" any more. Kind of sad really when you think about it.

  • elliot says he likes them, etc. & his deferential response isn't that surprising. calvin's is more interesting to me-he's producing their latest record (at the time) & pretty much says they are boring & to seek out isaac's early tapes.

    i like that...

  • They're still very much the same band, to me.

    Love these guys.

  • UMM i DON'T KNOW WHO WENT ON MY YOUTUBE BUT I DIDN'T WRITE THAT COMMENT OK I DON'T EVEN LIKE THIS BAND OK..??

  • lol

  • haha i love this

    modest mouse is the greatest

although i must say, poor beer selection

  • cheers

  • Lounge (Closing Time) and it is off "The Lonesome Crowded West"

  • will someone please tell me what mm song it is they play at 3:15?

  • R.I.P. elliot

  • that calvin johnson guy seems kinda like a weird ass. What is he looking at

  • eat shit.

  • Yeah he's freaky.

  • lol at isaac eating a sandwich

  • Yes Isaac. It is hard to smoke beer without matches. He's crazy, but we all love him. Can't wait to see them live. Wooooo!!!!

  • my name is elliott smith music i play... music.

  • haha so funny when elliott is singing right before the interview.

  • damn. footage of isaac in the beer isle!!!

classic. Thanks for the tips isaac. Im a gonna go get me a mickeys right now.

  • People who bitch about them "selling out" because their music is on tv...YOU ARE FUCKING RETARDED. Sony music basically owns the music they record and can distribute however they want. Modest Mouse probably didn't even have a say in wether or not their music was being used. YOU PEOPLE ARE JOKES!

  • as soon as they signed a contract to give other people control of their music, they signed away their integritry.

  • integrity rather

  • isaac will always have integrity

  • possibly, but he sure can't write a good album sober.

  • just like hemmingway couldnt write a good book sober, just like clapton cant write good music without cocaine. whats your point?

  • healthy for them, drag for us, haha

  • that's like saying Minor Threat couldn't write a good album sober . . . I think that it's just the way they've changed I mean same with Clapton, you get older your tastes change you lose your ability to jump around on stage and go nuts, especially if you were a junky or a drunk or any of the such . . . people put too much importance on drugs in the creative drugs . . . there are great musicians that used drugs and there are great musicians that didn't . . . the mind can be unlocked other ways

  • the Minor Threat example isn't exactly the same, Mackaye writes in a completely different style and mindset from modest mouse. Isaac wrote a lot of the older material drunk or high. He mixed moon and antarctica strung out on pain killers. I don't think drugs are important creatively for ALL musicians, but it seems like Isaac in particular got a lot of material and perspectives from his drug habits. I don't think his sobriety is the only factor, but the new album is really mediocre.

  • what I'm trying to say is that the after effects of the drugs may have made his sober music less attractive but it isn't the fault of his not being on drugs it's probably more the fault of the drugs in the first place . . . it's just that it sounded to me like you were trying to say his music was created by the drugs and not him which is common . . . I just wanted to clarify . . . it's sad cuz people think they hafta use to be good musicians when people say stuff like that

  • oh yeah, there's no question he's a great musician, drugs or not, but but drugs did have a big hold on him when he wrote the earlier stuff and I think you can easily see that reflected in the earlier work. Its not black or white, I just think drugs affected his music in a big way, and I happened to like that music. I think of it kind of in the same way as R. Crumb. He was a great technical artist before he took acid, but his work afterwards is phenomenal and it's what he's remembered for.

  • the whole acid thing is kinda tricky though cuz I mean it more breaks down barriers of thinking rather than influences music I mean that's kinda what I had in mind when I said there are other ways to unlock your mind it's just acid is easier for people I guess

  • but the fact still remains that you ARE right abouth selling the rights and that sucking . . . but it doesn't mean he doesn't make good music . . . I don't like their later stuff as much just like I don't like Clapton as much as I like Cream but it's all still quality work by hard working passionate artists

  • I don't see what is so terrible about Modest Mouse now. To tell you the truth I think they may not even care whether anyone thinks Modest Mouse are sellouts anyway. They make the music and either we like it or do not. I just so happen to love it.

  • Are you insane?!! Pull your stubborn mind out of your ass. I love their music through and through and to tell you the truth I find some songs from their later albums to be more deep and emotional than their earlier ones, lyrics wise.

  • okay. that's your opinion, and I have my opinion. Just Because they're not the same doesn't mean I'm stubborn or insane.

I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. I'm stating my opinion of a band I respect and am interested in.

  • does anyone know where to find isaac's solo music or whatever before modmouse? I can't find it anywhere, whether it be digital or tapes or cd I fucking want it

  • Sad Sappy Sucker is what he's refering to. It's Modest Mouse, just less organized and way funnier.

  • sweet, elliot smith thinks he's better than modest mouse, you can tell, At this point he is a more mature musician, but LCW in my opinion tops any smith album

  • calvin johnson is so awkward.haha. love him.

  • calvin's saying they sold out in 97, and itnt it ironic. youre having the same argument here.
