1:34 "Shooting a bear with a pistol, is a spiritual experience."
Indeedy. Like one to brag about for the rest of your life to your beer drinking buddies? Well there is a story for you. God loves stories, especially about death, so you ARE RIGHT. Totally, a "spiritual experience" wielding the power to take an innocent creature's life in just seconds.
Yep. That is the God I know alright. Seriously psycho.
I want to take my little brother camping. I have done backpacking trips and i want him to know the outdoors his about to go back to school its summer so bear are active I do not own a gun and can not buy want what can I do just to keep him safe is there another tool I can use or something. I could you give me a honest anwer.
ha fuck bear mace i will never trust a $15 can of mace that is made in china with cheep plastic that could break if i fell over and could cover me in mace. im all for the tree huggers not wanting to kill the bear but i dont go bear hunting but when i dear hunt that bear could be hunting me and when it comes down to who comes home at the end of the day ill unload my glock 22 into anything in the woods to make sure i stay alive but im not going to look for a bear to kill
I have no problems with someone using deadly force to defend themselves from a bear, or a human for that matter. What I do have a problem with is someone like you saying they are going to "antogonize the bear into a full charge," and "shooting a bear is a spritual experience." There is nothing spiritual about having to kill another living creature, especially when you have provoked it. You give responsible gun owners and naturalists a bad name.
More for the hippies : I love animals very much, but if I have to chose between my life or the one of my loved ones and the life of a bear or whatever, guess what it will be ?? ;)...go ahead and become an STATISTIC ! and keep " protecting " wild animals that don't give a SHIT ABOUT YOU !!
I totally agree with you, without a question, humans have been attacked by bears, cougars, boars, crocks, wolves ,etc. so yes, any outodoors man needs a good reliable fire arm. When I go hiking in a no bear country, but lots of wild pigs, I carry a .45 with 2 full clips of 12 each, soon I will get another clip, in bear country I would bring my .44 magnum, and bear mace, which always bring and have used it against a dog.
For the hippies : Is not that we want to kill wild animals, IT'S SAFETY !
You say you live up north, well so do I. And after viewing this video I do believe some day you'll make a hungry bear "very full". Get your facts right about bear spray, its a lot stronger than what a woman carries in her hand bag. And you'd better keep one bullet for yourself, to end your pain and suffering.
According to US Fish and Wildlife Services.. "a person’s chance of incurring serious injury from a charging grizzly doubles when bullets are fired versus when bear spray is used." You will not stop a charging grizzly or large brown bear with a .40, end of story. Maybe black bear. Mace is a cloud of pain that the bear must run through on its way to you and it stops them in their tracks. If you're going to count on a gun make it a rifle. You'll need more penetration than a .40 will provide.
I'm not sure a 40 caliber round could even kill a small black bear, I think you will need a .357 or .44 magnum. If you end up toe to toe with a grizzly you better have a S&W 500 or your fucked, because he will eat you and that glock.
rock on dude.... i backpack alot and like the option of having my .45... both both two and four legged predators. dont listen to the idiots that say otherwise.
I went nuts on google trying to figure out what a "Glock 40" was until i realised you were talking about CALIBER...
.40 Glocks are NOT a very optimal defensive choice... The Glock 20 and 29 (the 10mms) may be, as may be the .357 glocks. Really, you want a higher end magnum like .44
I'd take bear mace over that .40. The bear mace might not be super effective but at least I know what it does. Who knows how a bear will react to .40.
many things can go wrong with a gun; jamming, bad aim, not enough stopping power ect.. most of the time when a large bear is shot it will just become more enraged and continue the attack. How many bullets can you get into a bear thats already broken into your tent? what about one thats charging you from 10 feet away. Bear mace is much more effective but I would still still bring a gun as a backup. Check out my website, I did a full writeup on bear mace vs. guns
if ur any good hunter you clean and check your guns before you go out to use em i mean just think swat coming in to bust an operation and all of there guns cease up and jam
bear mace isnt exactly a fool proof plan cause once u spray the bear do u really think its gunna stop dead in its tracks or keep charging blindly at u
the gun to bear ratio aim for the face and unload the clip i dont think its gunna stand after having a clip of lead in its head
certain guns have a high tendancy to jam depending on model and flaws in design, regardless of how well maintained. bears have a thick skull, low cal or a bad shot might bounce right off and the grizzly won't be to happy after that.. I was also talking more about a general untrained person wandering bear country.. they are definitely better off with mace. ever seen a grizzly bear up close? it can rip a human to pieces in no time the key is to repel not enrage.
i've been trying to get a good hike together, and i was doing some research, and i am amazed that a 9mm will literally ricochet off their skull. thanks for the video. i would hate to hurt a bear, but you have to be safe.
people that like to enjoy the wilderness are not the enemies of bears. we are the ones that push for conservation and preservation of the wild and its animals. if you think a charging bear's life is more precious than a human's, then there's not a lot to say about you.
My first priorty is safty on any wilderness hike. Bear mace is generally just a mild irrantant for bears, it won't stop em. Also pre-emptive action is best if you see the bear first.
@northwoodsdude Why didn't you say that in the video then? In the video it seemed like you were just trying to make an argument that the most important deciding factor is which is a more spiritual experience. I pressed play expecting to hear about the pros and cons of both.
just talk to them like neighbours, bears are easy going unless you suprise them. Bring honney and throw the jar in the opposite direction....or paste the neighbour's mail box and watch the bears rip it down
so you want to kill a bear thats all i am hearing. i would use an have used bear mace to deal with a bear an once some wolves. An as a experienced hiker i would not bring a gun, are job is to observe the wonder of nature an if it attacks us we must find a non lethal way to deal with it not kill it.

This man should never be given a gun.

I've been an backpacker & hiker my whole life. I do carry a .357, wouldnt leave the truck without it...
HOWEVER, you sound like a tool. "if its looking at me the wrong way"
I"i'll antogize it, to try to get it into a full charge"
I'm sorry, but anyone who grew up with the wilderness knows that your retarded...You have the wrong mentaility...period.
I will use a firearm & or mace to stop a bear. I feel sorry for anyone with you on trail. Your gonna get yourself or others killed.

You added your two cents, as you said. But you certainly did not "end this debate once and for all" as you had hoped to do.
Next time try things like: a) Statistics b) Facts c) First Hand Experience

Pepper spray works. At least it works vs grizzly here in MT. I carry both while I bowhunt. Carry a revolver, .44mag, never jam.
