  • I heard "My gag taught me to bribe" Yup, you havent got a very good father!

  • I heard "my bab pop poop pee brive".

  • non of them worked on me =(

  • Not a very good example.

  • my gag cock me go grive

  • I think the sounds are edited ...regarding the changing background noise...just before and right after the bah bahsss

  • My gag tought me to drive too! I love my gag!

  • i listen to a lot of hip hop and play music so my ears are developed. and i wear glasses so my eyes are pretty shitty. i listened/ watched this knowing what it was suppose to infer while listening to what it sounds like.

  • what the fuck is this?

i heard exactly what you recorded regardless of watching your mouth or not. this is utter bullshit.

  • I only heard "Ba" in the examples. I'm kind of freaking out a little, because I seem to end up with a lot of variable responses to these videos, and I rarely seem to get the standard response. Is there any particular reason I would hear it differently?

Also, best video I saw about it.

  • @davamata Yeah you're fucking retarded. That's what it means.

  • The best video about the McGurk effect!

  • This is by far the best video about the McGurk effect on Youtube. And trust me, I've done my research!

    Love the video, very informative.

  • @MMurchie Thanks! Glad you liked it.

  • Linguist here! 411, your brain doesn't toss out both info sets & come up with something new, it sort of mushes them together to meet somewhere in the middle. "ba" is formed at the front of the mouth, and "ga" is formed in the back. "da" is in the middle-ish, so that's why your brain computes it that way. The longer example (new to me!) does the same thing, front sounds (b/p) + back visuals (g/k) = middle mash-up (d/t). The only difference is voiced (b/g/d) vs. voiceless (p/k/t) sounds. Love it!

  • THANK YOU!!!

I've been so confused with this whole mcgurk effect in my psycholinguistics class. we watched another video that showed the person just saying ba, ga, and da. When I closed my eyes, I saw ba. When I muted the video, I saw ga. But when I watched and listened to it, I still heard ba. But your example actually helped me understand it and I finally heard that pesky da! So thank you for bringing some of my sanity back!

  • For some reason, I always hear what someone's actually saying, even if it doesn't make sense or sounds unclear. I guess that's mostly because I usually don't care much about other people's specific facial movements/mimics related to speech. It's not that I don't see them or wouldn't recognize them, but i think that hearing and seeing are two very different things for me.

  • actually, the mcgurk effect cannot happen in everyday speech.

  • ...why? Ventriloquists can easily manipulate their lips to show something they're not saying. (Or show they're /not/ saying something they /are./) Very often, hearing impaired people, when speaking, aren't making the same sounds you'd make, to make the 'right' words, but their lips are making those movements -- so you understand their 'speech'.

  • @seanki98 Unless your Michael Winslow...the guy from the Police Academy movies.

  • very well explained and thanks for using something different than most people

  • Very well-explained. Thank you!

  • The mcgurk effect isnt as clear for me as it is for most people.. not sure what that says about my speech perception.. =)

Anyway, nice video. Are you studying psychology?

  • As a side interest mostly, I took a class in it this year.

I'm surprised there don't seem to be more people weakly affected by it like you. Usually there's a lot of variability with illusions, but this one seems pretty robust. Even while I was editing the video and seen it probably about 20 times, it still was clear for me.
