How wonderful to learn about the new life for these cats. While it's cute and fuzzy to see new cheetah cubs at CCF, releasing cheetahs into the wild is why I support Laurie and her work. Thanks for sharing this special moment!
Great to know that they're sticking together, for now. It will enhance their ability to bring down prey, as well as enable all of them to learn from their shared hunting experiences.
The five males will probably stay together in coalition for life, as brothers normally do. The females have yet to be released and will hopefully go their own separate ways as wild female cheetahs do. Thanks for your comment!
Was there any training for hunting, prior to release? Five males would be an unusually large coalition (certainly not something you're likely to see in nature!), but it should hopefully offset any experiential deficits.
I'm actually more concerned about the females, in that regard. As you said, they will likely end up as solo hunters.
Thanks for posting these wonderful videos! It's reassuring to know that there is work being done to preserve the cheetah as a living, thriving species.
My attempt to reply before did not work. Cheetahs hunt by instinct. What these cheetahs don't have is the benefit of having had a mother to teach them social skills --who their enemies are. They are habituated to people, and we need to make sure that they don't come close to human settlements. Plese feel free to e-mail us directly through our web site if you have further questions. Thanks!
all the best to them!
