That's true. I kept replaying this part to test it out. I managed to smack him with the steel pipe, and he never hit me. I loaded the save in again, and tried the same thing with the Great Knife, and its a one-hit kill(with volcanic blood effects). Another thing worth mentioning is that if you manage to hit him with a strong overhead strike with any melee weapon, you can cancel his attacks and prevent him from ever hitting you. Sorry this is so long.
