One of my all time favorite pieces! Thanks for posting it. I've only recently become a fan of choral music. I got hooked after hearing the American Boychoir's recording of Ave Maria (plainchant) by Richard Clark. If you haven't heard it, you should check it out. Just type "ave maria clark" in the Youtube search box and enjoy!
I first sang it at 9 years old....and in a few days it's gonna be 4 years since my grandmother died. At her funeral I heard this song again after I hadn't heard it in several years - in which I regularly attended the Tridentine Mass (without this song being played in that Tridentine Mass...).
Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who having truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood: May it be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death. Oh dear Jesus, Oh merciful Jesus, Oh Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen.
@j03y2fly I atheist(and rather anti-christian) aswell and really like this song. Btw I'm actually learning classical singing and 60% of the songs I have to sing are about jesus/virgin maria/god and such, am still waiting for the day when I will burst into flames on stage while singing these songs :P
@Varghalur The only teaching of the historical Jesus is unconditional love. Religions are human institutions. If there is a Mozart, there has to be a God.
Flames? That will surely be a good thing to see. Flames and light usually accompany the presence of the holy spirit. God's love and power in motion. Never mind the perverse banter about the flames of hell. Hell fire does not exist.
This is, for me too, the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heared. It also just brings me to tears because it reminds me of my younger brother. This is by far my favorite piece of Mozart's music I have heard.
This piece is so beautiful. We have sing that in our hometown, but the most surprised I was when I heard it in Madrid at WORLD YOUTH DAY 2011 during the adoration of the Holy Eucharist with Pope Benedict the 16 at the Cuatro Vientos Airport together with almost 2 million young people.
"Planted and build up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith" (Saint Paul)
Every sin Mozart ever committed is forgiven by this sublime motet. I sang it in cassock and surplice as a choir boy, and in my ignorance and innocence knew nothing except that it was somehow worthy of the pale Host in the monstrance, standing amongst the candles on the altar, loving me.
@allanaki Yes. That's the original pronunciation of the Latin word "CRUCE" Actually, it is pronounced "CRUCHE", That is the root word of our English word "CROSS" and the Spanish word "CRUZ". They all mean the same, i.e., the CROSS where the Christ was nailed and died!
@Nonie46 Isn't "cruche" church or medieval latin? I think the classical latin is more like "crukay" because the alphabet had yet to adopt the letter "k" and c always made the hard sound as in "cat".
This is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever hear. My darling husband died two weeks ago and it is being played at his funeral next Wednesday.
This song is preternaturally beautiful. I learnt it at age 11. But Paddylinden, your story leaves me incredibly moved, humbled and speechless. Thank you for sharing it.
I was taught this aged 10 by a fantastic music teacher, while at St.Teresa's PS in Belfast in 1981. I didn't understand it then and do not claim to now. What strikes me every time I hear it is that Bobby Sands had died and the city was burning, yet Mr. Morris and Mrs Grant taught us this and I will be forever grateful, that we sang this while death and destruction reigned all around us. These special teachers pursued beauty and perfection in our choir, Thanks Mr Tom Morris[RIP] & Mozart
@paddylinden This story touches me very deeply. You can never know what you're going to put into a young person as a teacher that will last forever, whether it's for their comfort, their courage, or their despair. If you remember him like this, now he's gone, then he also put it in you, just a little, for his own sake, on the memory. It's fair to be reminded how much a teacher can be to a child at any moment, likely without ever knowing it, and how we need to take care it's good.
