Not protective enough--there should be a net and there should never be more than one child on at a time (something about the surface becoming harder when one child is standing and the other is jumping, and causing broken bones). American Academy of Pediatrics says a trampoline should never be used at home, anyway. See the mayo clinic website for more information about trampoline safety if you are going to have one.
