From 5:27 onward, you can really hear the ideas and main "meat and potatoes" that went into the song "Hymne à l'Amour" on the album Songs to No one. If you haven't heard it, check it out. Jeff is singing in the song as well.
at kf in feb 97 jeff and gary performed this together, they seemed to be fighting each other through the whole thing, with gary pulling into avant-garde territory, and jeff trying to keep things congruent with the "grace" studio version
@Radeo@Radeo That's absolutely not true. I played the original version guitar-wise that we recorded as a demo heard on "Songs to No One"--the only way i have ever played it!-- the same music as this instrumental clip, without the space guitar coda at the end...and Jeff sang it beautifully, as always. There was no tension between us at all on stage, it flowed seamlessly and elicited a tremendous response from the crowd which included Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Tom Verlaine, and Lenny Kaye.
This is diffinently great it sounds like a half rock (very original) to an eerie symphonic piece with the effects, it just kicks ass! although like so many Jeff is one of my favorites. I like what did with it, but no denying Gary's greatest. Gary's a guitarist Jeff was a singer/guitarist. Jeff just wanted a younger group of guys in his band that's why he stopped playing with Gary.
Coming up with the perfect vocal melodies (on top of writing some fantastic, heartfelt lyrics) for this song isn't exactly something to scoff at, Sam. Especially when that someone is trying to do it over the complexities of Gary's otherworldly riffing. Both of these musicians just happened to make their parts look so disturbingly easy.
Oh wow, I knew that Gary Lucas wrote the riff but I didn't realise that Jeff only wrote the lyrics. I thought it was a full collaboration, with both the music and the lyrics.
Grace, and I guess this by extension lol, is my favourite song ever.
Don't mean to further burst your bubble, but Jeff didn't write "So Real" either. The riff was given to him by Michael Tighe, the second guitarist.
Which makes more than half of the Grace album either partly or entirely written by somebody else. Not to say that it isn't frickin' awesome nonetheless. Jeff was too busy being the best singer ever to be the best songwriter ever. But he was still pretty good - Dream Brother and Mojo Pin are solid compositions.
To jazznews: Nope. I'm just familiar with his work with the Captain, and his solo albums. As for your other comments, they don't apply to me. You do seem to have some "issues" regarding Mr.Lucas though. Hope you can resolve these. Best wishes.
So much for grace, huh? It's his song, however he plays it is the right way to play it.
Thank you Gary Lucas for donating "Rise Up To Be" to a good cause, Jeff Buckley is my idol and "Grace" my favorite song, now I know where half the credit goes.
Actually, karamelo7, I believe they were sitting in awe and holding their piece until after the song was finished, which turned out to be a great benefit for us listeners now, not having the song interjected with crowd woos.
Gary, like may other people, I know you because of Jeff. The work you did with him, and also Captain Beefheart and on your own, is great and I'm thankful to have found you. This is a really wonderful version of the song.
@garylucas I thought i could play grace pretty well until i heard this. it sounds unreal! when are you going to put some lessons up of your style of guitar? that would be awesome!
@garylucas Thank you Gary for giving your riff and inspiring the lyrics to Grace. Jeff must've been so enthralled with you and your playing. If music was Jeff's mother and muse then you were the father.
A lazy first half - listen to the version of this on his Paradiso album - but second half sonic aesthetics like a vampire cathedral at night - haunting is one of Gary's favorite words - but there's haunting and shitting your pants with fear - er, thanks Gary and Laubster for posting - Gary owns this track and he is sheer genius!

I am a little disappointed realizing that half of the genius of this song is not Buckley's... Lucas is great!!
