I play piano ok, but this guy makes me want to bite my own head off. He is a phenomenon. I saw him live at Montreaux a couple of years ago. Simply amazing. He is the heavy weight right now now and has been for years (although his countryman Ruben Gonzales came close in that he was (is?) more lyrical and subtle in his improvs. But Rubalcaba is the man. I could listen to this countless times.
Show off! I love this guy but come on. I dare you to listen to this twice. Actually I did listen to this twice. And I guess I can appreciate the chops and technique. Not exactly a sing along.:-)
...you piano freaks out there go check out 'Now he Sings Now he Sobs' and analyze Chicks lines. If you've studied classical theory you are familiar with 12-tone and serialism. In his solos Chick develops a serial pattern and then inverts it, sometimes inverse-retrogrades- depending on how he develops the sequence. I've never heard a piano player improvise with such direction and development.
Gonzalo is probably the heavy-weight right now, but Chick has nothing to prove after 'Now he Sings Now He Sobs' with Miroslav and Roy Haynes. I really love Gonzalo's lines and vigor. Most guys don't play with that passion...even if they can. I don't think I've ever comped for a bass player who would appreciate me stepping all over his solo that much though. But hey...it's Gonzalo's band, he can do what he wants.
At 8:54 you see the sneakers of the great Chick Corea. By 9:01 you also get his shell-shocked face! I don't believe in the phrase "the world's greatest...", but I think Chick no longer believe he's topping the bill today! GR is absolutely phenomenal and equally inspiring when playing sparsely, as in "Promenade" on his Inner Voyage album recorded in November '98.

It would be a serious mistake to believe that GR plays more music on his instrument than the legendary and criminally ignored Cecil Taylor.
Otherwise, I caught GR live...astonishing and brilliant musician.
