i like all spiders, even big mama from spider swiper (HUGE orange tarantula) and i like jumping spiders alot, especially because they have amazing eye sight, unlike most spiders
i'm arachnophobic but for some reason was never afraid of jumping spiders like this little cutie <3 love all spiders and don't kill them, just terrified if they surprise me.
@pallues The general family name of these spiders is "Salticidae" (from Latin "Salticus" which means "jumper"). I don't know the specific name of that sub-species. They may look cute, but if you were a fly, they would be terrifying. They are among the most smart predators on this planet. Their eyes can calculate the exact distance that separates them from a prey, calibrating their jump. They can even hunt other spiders by touching their webs "interpretating" a victim and attracting them.
Only living things that creep me the hell out, arachnids and insects. I don't have a problem with the way a scorpion looks but spiders in particular just make my skin crawl. I think it has to do with the eyes and the hairy appearance.
The secret weapon of jumping spiders is that when you are ready to crush them for creeping you out, they ALWAYS look into your eyes with those sad puppy eyes of them.
Thank you for posting this! Beautiful and detailed footage! I'm working on a spider character for my illustration class, so this is a great reference!
The tiny jumping spiders are probably the most tolerable, in my opinion. I have a few that hang out by my back door, and we give each other mutual respect. However, I HATE those giant banana spider that love making webs right at face level in my yard.
Same here...I used to be terrified of them...I even remember how my fear started...but it started with a small scorpion sting (WTF?) In Arkansas, we had these VERY tiny scorpions roaming around and I got stung...for some reason, my brain registered spider and was terrified of them...
So terrified at the point where I would run to another part of the house if I saw one...my mother and grandmother never saw me run so fast when one unfurled in midair (on a strand of web in midair
i really wish these things didn't move like they did, it'd the biggest part about them that creeps me out. in reality they are pretty much afraid of humans but it still looks very sketchy when thye move around in a slideshow manner.
@Mjarf88 That's the mainstream media for ya. Out of tons of species, only a few are dangerous to humans or aggressive towards them, and even fewer are both. Sharks are also an unfortunate victim of sensationalist BS.
@TheOtherLioyd It's a natural response too though. The age old " GAH! OH MY FUCKING GOD KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!" reaction has been written into our genes for thousands of years. Pretty much anything that scuttles sets it off, because our silly old subconscious still fears excruciating death by poisoning.
But you're right, it's irrational nowadays. Hardly any spider venom can kill us now. And we've got hospitals to deal with the stuff that can, so no worries lol.
@l3awl3ag Actually, the knee-jerk arachnophobia is largely cultural. A mild wariness of potentially poisonous creatures is one thing, but being descended from hunter-gatherers, jumping at every creepy-crawly would be highly detrimental to any efforts at hunting or traveling. Consider that arachnophobia is most common in places where there are relatively few spiders, while people in places with more spiders are, on average, considerably calmer around them.
@16Nire61 you don't spend that much time hunting, or run into that many spiders, for them to ruin the hunt. It's just as likely people in spidered places have the conditioned response, and spiderless people have the natural response.
Also a spider bite in the old days was much more likely to be deadly.
And humans have lived around spiders for hundreds of millennia, plenty of time and circumstance for even a tiny genetic advantage to result in most people being spider-jumpers.
@kozmon0t I was referring to how spider-jumping would have been detrimental to our ancestors. They hunted in areas where many creepy-crawlies, spiders included, would have been numerous. To be fearful of a minor threat (as the vast majority of spiders are harmless) would have led to frightening off prey from an over-exaggerated startle reflect or a lack or concentration.
I'll send you a link to an article on arachnophobia that can explain it better than I could. :)
@16Nire61 I know what you meant, I was saying the detriment to hunting is exaggerated. Most time isn't spent hunting, you don't often run into spiders at a critical part of the hunt, and when they make you jump, it doesn't have to be noisy.
Brazilians, if they don't jump when they see spiders, they should.
@kozmon0t More than anything it would depend on where you're hunting. A dense jungle's obviously going to have more spiders that might happen across your path. But I agree a skilled hunter should definitely be able to stay calm.
Like I said, mild wariness is one thing and perhaps wise, but the extreme fear that some people fear around spiders is what's nonsensical, especially for such a minor threat that most animals don't even acknowledge.
@16Nire61 it's only extreme fear for a few people. Fundamentally I think it is more of a reflex that makes you jump like when you touch a hot stove.
When I see a mobile spider, I reflexively go into action like someone pulled a fire alarm in my head, before I even fully recognize that it's a spider. I don't fear it, but I get rid of it as an unwanted presence and potential threat. I don't react like that to web spiders or snakes. If I ever go to Brazil, I'll be glad of that reflex.
@kozmon0t I do that for anything that startles me, spider or no. Even my cat does it to me sometimes. XD But spiders on their own don't cause that kind of reaction for me.
@roidroid More or less. When was the last time you've ever seen about a spider on TV in which it -wasn't- some horrible demonic entity that crawled out of Satan's own ass crack to feed on people's suffering?
@animunki Those are pedipalps. They use them for feeling surfaces, signals to other spiders, dusting their eyes and fangs, handling prey that they kill and eat, and the males use them for mating the females. From what I have heard, they also "smell" with them, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
@MariokartwiirulesXD They are venomous but not deadly to most people. They maybe deadly to a person allergic to stings and spider bites, but over 99% of the world's population wouldn't even get sick if a jumping spider bit them. They will only bite if grabbed, squeezed, or if their young or eggs are threatened. Or if you poke and aggitate them to the point they feel like their life is at stake. I have handled so many, and not one has even threatened me.
@MariokartwiirulesXD I released her into the wild after the Oklahoma drought ended, so I'm not able to do another video of her. She was still a juvenile when I released her, so I may stumble across her this coming Spring if she is still alive. She will be ready for mating, and her color will be gray and she'll have yellowish legs. I should be able to find a Phidippus Putnami again, but it's not guaranteed to be her. I do have some more videos of her on YouTube.
I was waiting for her head to pop up at the beginning, and I prepared myself to scream. But then, those two things on her face [no spider knowledge, at all] starting moving up and down, and I was just staring at the screen going "Awwww ^-^"
@MalkavianC Panasonic HDC HS700 Camcorder, and I attached a Raynox DCR 250 Macro Conversion Lens to get the high magnification and detail of her face.
@hamedsamdi19972 Only if you are allergic to stings and bites, or if you're a small insect or spider which she could eat. She is actually friendly, but she would defend herself if she was grabbed like a beetle or squeezed in some way that she would feel threatened for her life.
I really respect your knowledge and love for spiders, man. Sometimes the examples of others can shine a new light on those inevitable "eek"s and "eww"s that most people react toward these guys, but great stuff! =D
@stapledshut02 There was a survey done on this spider, and over 50% said she was cute, even people who don't like spiders were saying it was cute. Plenty of comments in here that back it up, but I know everyone doesn't think she's cute. It's one of those "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" things. Because some people would still freak out if they saw this spider. I lost my fear of spiders just a little over a year ago.
@Torn80cj you are right, the people would freak out if they saw this kind of spider, including me, but the fact is, that this one is cute, and i like spiders, while they dont bite me XD
