@yorgaraz ati = incompatibility .... every ati i had was not good usable with the same strength like nvidia... now i have heat problems with my new nvidia card :( irony...
Yes I was really place when I installed my last Nvidia drivers and subsequently nearly melted down my 295. Very nice support. I truly appreciated it. wouldnt anyone with any sence just buy the best card on the market ?
i have a few pc's and they have ati and nvidia, amd and intel. i find it hard to understand why people just stick to one make. its not like a football team or anything.
That would be because while ATI may get a leg up on Nvidia on occasion, you'll still have people like yourself that want the best card that is currently on the market. Then you have people like myself who have jumped the bandwagon on occasion only to be disappointed that Nvidia comes out with something that blows ATI out of the water. Then reigns as king for extended periods of time.I've been on both sides and Nvidia consistently makes a better card that outperforms for longer periods.
@jamesstone123 Yep, i'll be buying my 5850 (still expensive tbh), and NOT buying any of nvidia cards, for the sole reason of price - performance ratio.
but lets be practical, games for pc are in the shitter. Nothing advances beyond 2006 graphics quality really and who needs to run their games at 500 fps with fermi?
Blame piracy and consoles. One shits on our developers and the other shits on our prospects and hopes.
Look at the alien vs predator screens. SHIT! could pass for dx9 as usual.
God bless crytek for trying to continue the fight for the pc but even they are aiming towards consoles now with crysis 2.
But since the big money in pc-gaming is made with hardware components, i personally think and put my hopes into the hardware industry. They should reward studios which support and push pc-hardware to the limits. This could be done by a simple voting system. For example, when you buy a new videocard you get some kind of code, which you can use to vote for a developer to get financially supported from the hardware company.
This would work very well, in my opinion. Cause the hardware industry pretty much depends on pc-gaming to sell their stuff, so it would make sense to support pconly studios to get people to buy pc-hardware instead of lame console bullshit, and i believe, there's simply too much money involved for them to let it go down the drain.
right now it's obvious ati has better price/performance ratio, they're one generation ahead of nvidia, you can't really do the comparison until this one comes out
@stovnergutt keep on dreaming. now I know who buys overpriced, hot, high power consumption hardware just for bragging rights, just to say "I have a Nvidia Fermi.." pfff
Nvidia's execution has been shameful the past 3 years, all chips delivered late, derivates take ages to appear, nvidia's big chip philosophy has failed big time.
I'll bet you that you'll be able to get DX11 5870 at $250 before you can get a DX11 Fermi GTX 480 at $450, and fermis will be sold at loss for nvidia.
@tabovilla GTX 260 - 275 - 280 - 295 all was owning ATI before The 5000's series.. Now, as they skiped GTX 3xx and renamed it 4xx stating it was becouse its so much better than they had expected.. There is no doubt, yet again Nvidia shall prevail.
GTX 4xx will win against any 5xxx anytime, anywhere.. in 2-3 years, ati will lead for 4 months again until nvidia surprise them yet again..
You know, waiting can also be a marketing strategy. Attacking ATI when their ideas are used up.. you'll see..
@stovnergutt nvidia skiped the gtx 3xx series for fucking renaming old cards. just like the gts250 which is technicly a overclocked 8800gt with 55nm. just look at the fucking laptop cards gts360m=gts260m gts350m=gts250m and i wouldn't be so shure about fermi. the yield rate is still in single digit range. a 104gpu wafer costs 5000$ even with a 10% yield rate they could produce ~10gpus at a price of 500$ each. a cypress gpu costs 50-100$ nvidia must sell fermi with loss to compete with amd
With loss? let me ask you this, do you have any education about marketing at all?.. you clearly know nothing about marketing for sure.
Secondly the Gts250 is based on the GT200 arcitecture and the 8xxxx series is NOT based on the GT200 arcitecture..
Also, there are no official reports what the GTX4xxx will be like when it comes to Core clock's etc. ALSO, pretty much unlike previous cards, you can now be able to increase voltage on the cards.. they also stated it can be overclocked a lot.
@stovnergutt you should try doing research. They didn't skip 3xx because they wanted to, they did so because it failed in production and chip yields. Too slow and hot, which is why it was delayed. No company in their right mind would let their competition rake in cash for 2 quarters on purpose. I'm sure the GTX 470 and 480 will beat the 5850 and 5870. It better, or nVidia should shoot themselves in the head.
@mrjspeed THAT IS totally wrong!!! Lmao, no no no.. No company skips names if that's the issue, how do you think skipping names solves anything? you're wrong.
The GF100 was so powerful they decided to skip GTx3xx and rename it GTX4xx after their preferences, thats all.. No one knows how powerful this card will be..
Nvidia fanboy? how come? Nvidia always holds their GPU's a bit back so they can solve the major issues at the spot before releasing it. They alway's win the market in the end..
you really believe they skipped a generation because 'its just soooooo good!'?
Come on, they are grabbing at straws because their business is failing. Its that simple. Anything to keep the loyal fanboys putting off a 5870 purchase.
But they are not holding it back, ITS NOT READY. Your saying they make a card with problems then fix them before releasing it, wasting time and money. I dont think so.
Failing? .. Ehem.. Last time i checked Nvidia had a higher gross compared to ATI.
Do you know anything about Nvidia? They make a lot more than GPU's...
They are the leading company in making servers, developer softwares, physix, coding, special GPU's for develoters, making games, and a lot LOT more.. They also contribute other games, so that they may later harvest money..
They chill, no need to stress simply becouse they are doing just fine..
I also think people fail to see that with all the extra time Nvidia have had to develop a better product they really have no excuse for NOT beating cypress. Its not that they are better than ATI, if anything they are worse because they cant get a gpu out in time.
It's great to see ATI getting their fair share of profits. They deserve it.
But when you have all this extra development time you dont have an excuse NOT to make a better product, you can't claim "Fermi is better" because it isn't. Its late, Overpriced and simply not aimed at the gamer.
You wont notice a diff in performance either because 5870 already maxes pretty much everything so you may as well save several hundred dollars and buy yourself a card that is practical, fully featured, reasonable and more importantly available.
The difference shown in DX11 tesselation between GTX4xxx and HD5xxxx was 100% from ATI to 350-400% from Nvidia (official tesselation Benchmarks shown in an gathering) search for GF100 in youtube.
Due to overheating of the memory i believe, which is worse than driver problems because it means it was poorly designed in the first place which no driver will fix.
Sad to see but makes me glad i never rushed out and purchased a 5870 :)
I dont know what company to choose for my next purchase. I have a nVidia GTX285 and am using Win7 x64. Now, I love Win 7, but the drivers from nVidia arent so great TBH. They crash and reload themselves while playing some games. And at the character selection screen for WoW, if it sits there for a few mins, the game crashes and I get a blue screen - never happened with older nVidia drivers... :(
This is a totally new architecture, which means we really, honestly don't have a clue how it will perform against ATI and whether it will be worth it. untill its tested by a unbiased source (ie not nvidia or ATI)
300 fps is not needed.. but, hmm.. What if somone actually tuned the graphics beyond anything seen before with DX11, wouldn't all the "300" fps be reduced?..
32xAA could be nice for old games.. Crysis 2 on Pc will need an extremely powerful card, there we go with GTX4xx.. Newer games will be more powerhungry.. Heck, soon the GTX2xx series will not be able to max out games, even in sli.. The GT9xxx couldn't keep up anymore.. not soon, the GT2xxx is going down.. (same for HD4xxxx etc..)
I hate how poorly Nvidia coded PhysX support for the GTX 2x0 series. As soon as I enable PhysX in the game I get as good performance as a 9x00 series card, which is BS.
What is it about the next line from Nvidia that will allow them to utilize the GPU that much more efficiently for physics? Anyone know?
depends what 200 series card you have, and physx is demanding, its technically running something a cpu should be, and more. SO if you have a single card for physx and graphics, then you have a recipe for a slower card.
@Netkiller3714 The 9800gt was way ahead of its time, I mean seriously the chip was launched in 2005 and here we are in 2011 still playing games on it with high settings.
@greyfoxzero Yeah. Pretty well built too. I accidentally oc'd my card to high once and it started smoking and shit. I got another year of use out of it. That's pretty fucking good.
the clock speeds on some of the 9 series cards are as high or higherthan the gtx2 series. i know yes that there are many more differences bt that see,s to be your problem=]
Their Gigathreading technology has improved, which works like Hyperthreading, allows the gpu to switch threads from memory easily, supposedly their is a dedicated thread scheduler in gigathread.
I'm no ATI/Nvidia fanboy, right now I have a GTX280 and an 5870 in my two PC's, they're both good. I have to say though, I'm not very impressed with any of the Fermi vids I've seen so far. Time will tell...
hmm .. you know guys ... i don't have a money for the FULL HD monitor ( for 3D sh*t ) and this video is unlookable ... i think this looks cool ... and there is not so many games for PhysX !! Batman AA and with my 8800GT and medium PhysX i have 1 fps .) (-.-")
soo ... NVIDIA PhysX ? i have a 8800 GT B.E. 1 GB and if i turn on the PhysX in the games ... i have 2-3 fps -.-" there is 5-6 game for it ... and the games everytime coming too late. And you buy GT300 Fermi i dunno what the hell for 1000$ or ATI 5870 1 GB for 300-400$ ...
@mylolHUN LOL funny part is that the nVidia's card is only 1 gpu compared to the 5970 which is 2? yeah we would love to see that kick 5970's ass( which it wont)
And the general idea is that the 300 series cards have much faster single GPUs that pack more power more effeciently and generate less heat, while the 5970 just loads up two comparatively clunky GPUs. The 5970 is a competitor to the GTX 295, and I will admit that it performs better than the 295. But the technology inherent in the 300 series means that first of all, when they do make a dual-GPU card, it WILL blow away the 5970 (but ATI will probably have another competitor) AND generate less heat
Ok, you really don't know much do you. Wait, you know nothing about Fermi! Because no one does, who's to say that it won't compete directly with the 5970? A dual Fermi card will be out sooner or later, I guarantee you.
you're an idiot. The 5970 and 300 series are not in the same generation. The 5970 is a competitor to the GTX 295, not the 300 cards. ATI will probably release its own new series of cards to compete with the 300s, and those will most likely be within the same price range, whatever that might be.
@Acfeiln Could not be more retardedly wrong if you tryed. The DX11 cards are in direct competition with eachother, the 295 is the behemoth of LAST generation. The competition from ATI at that point was the 4870x2.
If we are to consider the DirectX the marker of a generation, then ATI has a terrible history of coming out with their card first, only to have it beaten by the nVidia card that comes later. I am not a fanboy. I am doing ATI a favor by considering the 5970 and GTX 295 the same generation; if we pit the GTX 295 against the 4870 X2, then nVidia wins.
Haha, oh lawd I love people who think they know stuff. ATI next generation will be coming in 2011 on the 28nm half node. The 5970 is in a league of its own and will compete with NVIDIAs GT300 Dual-GPU card. The 5870 will most likely perform next to the GTX 380 and the 5850 to the GTX 360. If the GTX 380 is largerly more powerful than the 5870 though, ATI will release the 5890. Simple as that, 'Idiot'. And, there is a chance of a 5990 as well.
I find it funnier that there are people that think that they know more than other people. The 5970 will compete directly with the GF104 where as the GF100 will compete with the 5870. When the 5990 is out, a dual Fermi based card will also be out.
5970 will compete directly with GF104? Where'd you get that info from? Oh yeah...internal sources. Just like the 5870 was supposed to beat the GTX 295 by miles, yet it still beats it, but not by miles. And as AMD themselves said. "-Well if it's not faster and it's 50 per cent bigger, then they've done something wrong-".
AMAZING! Oh yeah...and Fermi is 6 months late to the game. 6 MONTHS. If they didn't beat the 5000 series they have some real issues.
Good, I hope it does! That way, we all win. Cheap ass cards all around! I couldn't care less if I went with NVIDIA or ATI, Intel or AMD. Whoever offers the best for the price, gets my money. Although I'm starting to move towards AMD instead of Intel, due to Intel being, who they are. But that's a different discussion.
No, I am not owned, and do not mistake my position. I am not attempting to determine the technology levels of cards that haven't been released. I am saying that if the 300 series cards are in fact a step up from the 5000 series cards, then ATI will probably be coming up with its own competitor shortly following the 300 series' release. Whatever the technologies are, I guarantee they'll both play games, just like they have in the past. Do not mistake me for a fanboy.
Oh okay I won't mistake you as a fanboy. I'll mistake you as illinformed. Why? Oh, the fact the 5000 series is what ATI has to compete with GT300. And the fact, that ATI's new architecure is coming in 2011. And even more proof of that is that it'll be on the 28nm fab process. Guess what? GF isn't ready with that yet. They're aiming for 2H 2010. So there is NO WAY, ATI's 6000 series is going to compete with GT300 anytime soon. It's in the roadmaps etc, so what made you think that?
You seem to know allot about the Nvidia GPU's so I was wondering if you knew how it works when they are released, Do they start selling Nvidia made ones and then companies like EVGA, ASUS & Gigabyte buy them and mod them with paint jobs and tweak the clocks? I just want to know if EVGA will release there GTX300 series cards in March as well or if it takes longer for companies like EVGA to release there cards? Thanks for any help mate. =]
It sounds just like the norm. I'm saying that BECAUSE the 6000 series probably won't be released until a good time after the 300 series, I would consider the 5000 series a competitor, since they would be on the market in the same time. It boils down to preference. I could wait for the 300 series instead of getting a 5000, or I could wait for 6000 instead of 300, or I could wait for 400 instead of 6000, etc.
the first part is what you said btw. But for example right now, the 5000 series and 200 series are close enough in performance that I would call them competitors, until the 300 series comes out.
And either of the options will play games for a long, long time.
what if nvidia wanted ati to release first. perhaps it was a "il show you mine if you show me yours", but nvidia just pointed and laughed when ati goes theirs out first. and are like "ul get to see my cahoonas in due time lol (after they see how best to combat ati's performance grade.
Lol, except that a few months after Nvidia releases Fermi, ATI will release their HD-6XXX series. Nice try.
And Fermi sucks if you're gaming. Nvidia is hyping Fermi way too much, it's only usefull for parallel programming lol!! It's not a replacement for a supercomputer.
by the time ati releases 6000 series, nvidia would already release a new line. nvidia just had a delay on this because it was a huge project. to a supercomputer, why do you think its not for gaming???? nvidia gtx 295 is already used for parrallel programing. stupid
DX10 went down because Vista grabbed at it while IT was falling. I reckon DX11 will do better, but not by a massive amount. there's still a heck of a lot more work to do to make a DX10 game than a DX9 one, and games like Dead Space and Fallout 3 prove that NOT being DX10 didn't stop anyone buying it, and unfortunately developers saw that.
Its a bunch of horseshit ! You can pick up a telephone number to any Dev, from these big gaming companies and ask why they don't use Physics environments, or the physx engine, and the answer will always be, "We don't need it." or " We think gamers don't see the difference while playing fps games." I've mailed a bunch of these assholes, got the exact same answer. Whats the point to DX11 when devs don't know what to do with it, or are willing to use it, now we sit with these short lived games.
When DX10 was first announced everybody was in such hype, better performance, greater graphical improvements, more GPU boost, one year later we still going on using DX9 as graphics "base", DX10 titles are few in between. Crysis is the only game at that time, that jumped at DX10, but no one followed suit. Very few game companies seems to be competent enough to take the leap on DX11, when they still don't quite get yesterdays DX10. Thank you for your time.
until the next gen of consoles DX10/11 support will be fairly limited IMO. why would game devs focusing on the console mass market put extra time and effort into spicing the game up for us PC gamers?
some do of course, and i imagine DX10 will start becoming a bit more common now.
i need to get a GT300 when they come out. i reckon the hardware will be pretty special. nvidia milked the G92 chip for 3 gens but are ditching the excellent GT200 chip after 1? they must have something real special.
They might have "something", but what I think they should've done is come out with the truth, the CEO could've stepped up to the fans and said,"listen, we know we're in hard times, we're trying to get things together, we're still working on the new Fermi card, there's tons of issues right now, but we're optimistic on getting it done by 2010 Q3", and what he do, he gets up there, makes a fool of himself with a covered up bpc board, and says its almost "done".
I wonder how much PPD it will get? Right now HardwareCanucks is having another F@H contest. Winner gets a GTX 285.:)
We just got 1million points in the last 24hours.:) Join HCF F@H team #54196 and help cure cancer. Stop by the Hardware Canucks F@H forum for more info. Its never to late to join, Theirs always another contest down the road:) Hardware Canucks rocks, Great reviews guys keep then coming.
Yeah, see you get it. I tought they're joking, suddenly I hear people cheering, I go, wtf. Nvidia will come out with its new card next year, but it wont be until mid 2010, by then Ati will have launched the 5800 series X2 which are beginning to look really impressive. The lack of shame from Nvidia, comming showing people some fake empty card :D
dude, props for both companies, both nvidia and ati have been doing a great job serving us with awesome video cards. the competition drives prices low so no dissing one brand or the other, heck i only have a 4850, yet it's an amazing card for my 19'' monitor.
it's because you don't get it, they are all wearing Nvidia's 3D Vision glasses, don't you wonder WHY it's doubled?
But because YOU are not receiving TWO separate images, rendered at TWO separate perspectives, filtered into each one of your eyes, and then combined inside of your Brain. You don't see the 3D effect.
I imagine it's absolutely insane. (for the people there.)
i a gree that nvidia cheating fps cous i have 8800 gt :P, if fraps show 50 fps then i see only lagg its about anders 20 fps , if u don know how is real fps then look with movies, actually 25 fps must be smooth like with ATI :D
lame, nvidia sucks, they treat there investors like shit, and cheat in games/benchmarks.. I don't know why anyone would stand by this sort of company.. They've also discontinued the mid and high end cards currently available... which means no more driver support for nearly all cards that are currently available...
But you know the difference between ATi and NVIDIA cores/shaders? ATi has 320 5D shaders. 5D, cause you have to multiply it with 5 to get on 1600 shaders.
So: You can compare 320 (5D) Sahders of ATi, with 512 (1D) Shaders of Nvidia, you see the difference?
BTW there's still another difference between the operations, but this would take too long ;)
It's a diffent architecture. And tell me, how can HD4870x2 (1600 SP's) get owned by GTX 295 (480 SP's). I'd like an answer on that. Also, 2GB GDDR5 get's own by 1792 Mb GDDR3.
Nvidia has the most powerful cards on the market, ATI/AMD has the best bang for the buck, because, lets be honest.... Nvidia's performance is enormous, but so is the price..

fermi will NOT put ATi on the backlog in the slightest for 2 reasons.
1. fanboys. People who buy nvidia and always do, people who buy ATi and always do. Its sad but true.
2. Expense. Nvidia will have the enthusiast market when fermi is released but ATi will be getting the goods for the lower end markets.
As far as i can tell Fermi is ALL good news. At the very least we should see a huge decrease in the price of GTX2xx series cards which is a plus.

I agree, and it's very sad to see this happening.
But since the big money in pc-gaming is made with hardware components, i personally think and put my hopes into the hardware industry. They should reward studios which support and push pc-hardware to the limits. This could be done by a simple voting system. For example, when you buy a new videocard you get some kind of code, which you can use to vote for a developer to get financially supported from the hardware company.
moeizoptik 1 year ago
This would work very well, in my opinion. Cause the hardware industry pretty much depends on pc-gaming to sell their stuff, so it would make sense to support pconly studios to get people to buy pc-hardware instead of lame console bullshit, and i believe, there's simply too much money involved for them to let it go down the drain.
moeizoptik 1 year ago
right now it's obvious ati has better price/performance ratio, they're one generation ahead of nvidia, you can't really do the comparison until this one comes out

GTX 470 and 480 will surely beat ATI and their upcoming cards without any doubt..
stovnergutt 1 year ago
@stovnergutt keep on dreaming. now I know who buys overpriced, hot, high power consumption hardware just for bragging rights, just to say "I have a Nvidia Fermi.." pfff
Nvidia's execution has been shameful the past 3 years, all chips delivered late, derivates take ages to appear, nvidia's big chip philosophy has failed big time.
I'll bet you that you'll be able to get DX11 5870 at $250 before you can get a DX11 Fermi GTX 480 at $450, and fermis will be sold at loss for nvidia.
tabovilla 1 year ago 2
@tabovilla GTX 260 - 275 - 280 - 295 all was owning ATI before The 5000's series.. Now, as they skiped GTX 3xx and renamed it 4xx stating it was becouse its so much better than they had expected.. There is no doubt, yet again Nvidia shall prevail.
GTX 4xx will win against any 5xxx anytime, anywhere.. in 2-3 years, ati will lead for 4 months again until nvidia surprise them yet again..
You know, waiting can also be a marketing strategy. Attacking ATI when their ideas are used up.. you'll see..
stovnergutt 1 year ago
Skipan2 1 year ago
With loss? let me ask you this, do you have any education about marketing at all?.. you clearly know nothing about marketing for sure.
Secondly the Gts250 is based on the GT200 arcitecture and the 8xxxx series is NOT based on the GT200 arcitecture..
Also, there are no official reports what the GTX4xxx will be like when it comes to Core clock's etc. ALSO, pretty much unlike previous cards, you can now be able to increase voltage on the cards.. they also stated it can be overclocked a lot.
stovnergutt 1 year ago
@stovnergutt
the gts250 is based on g92
google it or go the the nvidia homepage
it has 128 stream processing units.
gt200 has 240.
and increaseing voltage on gpus is nothing new.
you can do it with old geforce cards and with a modified bios you can still do it with actuall cards.
and all the BE cards from amd can be overclocked via tools/drivers
Skipan2 1 year ago
@stovnergutt you should try doing research. They didn't skip 3xx because they wanted to, they did so because it failed in production and chip yields. Too slow and hot, which is why it was delayed. No company in their right mind would let their competition rake in cash for 2 quarters on purpose. I'm sure the GTX 470 and 480 will beat the 5850 and 5870. It better, or nVidia should shoot themselves in the head.
stovnergutt = nVidia fanboi
mrjspeed 1 year ago
@mrjspeed THAT IS totally wrong!!! Lmao, no no no.. No company skips names if that's the issue, how do you think skipping names solves anything? you're wrong.
The GF100 was so powerful they decided to skip GTx3xx and rename it GTX4xx after their preferences, thats all.. No one knows how powerful this card will be..
Nvidia fanboy? how come? Nvidia always holds their GPU's a bit back so they can solve the major issues at the spot before releasing it. They alway's win the market in the end..
stovnergutt 1 year ago
@stovnergutt
WHAT?
you really believe they skipped a generation because 'its just soooooo good!'?
Come on, they are grabbing at straws because their business is failing. Its that simple. Anything to keep the loyal fanboys putting off a 5870 purchase.
But they are not holding it back, ITS NOT READY. Your saying they make a card with problems then fix them before releasing it, wasting time and money. I dont think so.
centuryman007 1 year ago
Failing? ..
They chill, no need to stress simply becouse they are doing just fine..
stovnergutt 1 year ago
@mrjspeed
Well said sir.
I also think people fail to see that with all the extra time Nvidia have had to develop a better product they really have no excuse for NOT beating cypress. Its not that they are better than ATI, if anything they are worse because they cant get a gpu out in time.
It's great to see ATI getting their fair share of profits. They deserve it.
centuryman007 1 year ago
@stovnergutt
remember what i told you about the 300 series?
they didn't "skiped" it because of fermis performance
go to the nvidia page and check the specs of the BRANDNEW gt340. than compare it to the gt240.
they're 100% identical.
it wouldn't suprpise me if nvidia renaims the gtx260/275... to gtx360/375..
they just need something "new" for the market since fermi still might take up to half a year till the largescale production starts

I dont know what company to choose for my next purchase. I have a nVidia GTX285 and am using Win7 x64. Now, I love Win 7, but the drivers from nVidia arent so great TBH.

JigenD 2 years ago
depends what 200 series card you have, and physx is demanding, its technically running something a cpu should be, and more. SO if you have a single card for physx and graphics, then you have a recipe for a slower card.

Acfeiln 2 years ago
Proof? Oh right you have none. Keep sucking nvs dick fanboy.
MrMalavon 2 years ago
Ok, you really don't know much do you. Wait, you know nothing about Fermi! Because no one does, who's to say that it won't compete directly with the 5970? A dual Fermi card will be out sooner or later, I guarantee you.
r34p3rex 2 years ago
you're an idiot. The 5970 and 300 series are not in the same generation. The 5970 is a competitor to the GTX 295, not the 300 cards. ATI will probably release its own new series of cards to compete with the 300s, and those will most likely be within the same price range, whatever that might be.
Acfeiln 2 years ago
@Acfeiln Could not be more retardedly wrong if you tryed. The DX11 cards are in direct competition with eachother, the 295 is the behemoth of LAST generation. The competition from ATI at that point was the 4870x2.
Celeras 2 years ago 3

Moron. /Owned
Deadmendontcry 2 years ago
I find it funnier that there are people that think that they know more than other people. The 5970 will compete directly with the GF104 where as the GF100 will compete with the 5870. When the 5990 is out, a dual Fermi based card will also be out.
r34p3rex 2 years ago
5970 will compete directly with GF104? Where'd you get that info from? Oh yeah...internal sources. Just like the 5870 was supposed to beat the GTX 295 by miles, yet it still beats it, but not by miles. And as AMD themselves said. "-Well if it's not faster and it's 50 per cent bigger, then they've done something wrong-".
AMAZING! Oh yeah...and Fermi is 6 months late to the game. 6 MONTHS. If they didn't beat the 5000 series they have some real issues.
Deadmendontcry 2 years ago
Wait another hour for the CES keynote, promise you it'll compete directly with the 5970.
r34p3rex 2 years ago
Good, I hope it does! That way, we all win. Cheap ass cards all around! I couldn't care less if I went with NVIDIA or ATI, Intel or AMD. Whoever offers the best for the price, gets my money. Although I'm starting to move towards AMD instead of Intel, due to Intel being, who they are. But that's a different discussion.
Deadmendontcry 2 years ago
No, I am not owned, and do not mistake my position. I am not attempting to determine the technology levels of cards that haven't been released. I am saying that if the 300 series cards are in fact a step up from the 5000 series cards, then ATI will probably be coming up with its own competitor shortly following the 300 series' release. Whatever the technologies are, I guarantee they'll both play games, just like they have in the past. Do not mistake me for a fanboy.
Acfeiln 2 years ago 2
Oh okay I won't mistake you as a fanboy. I'll mistake you as illinformed. Why? Oh, the fact the 5000 series is what ATI has to compete with GT300. And the fact, that ATI's new architecure is coming in 2011. And even more proof of that is that it'll be on the 28nm fab process. Guess what? GF isn't ready with that yet. They're aiming for 2H 2010. So there is NO WAY, ATI's 6000 series is going to compete with GT300 anytime soon. It's in the roadmaps etc, so what made you think that?
Deadmendontcry 2 years ago
You seem to know allot about the Nvidia GPU's so I was wondering if you knew how it works when they are released, Do they start selling Nvidia made ones and then companies like EVGA, ASUS & Gigabyte buy them and mod them with paint jobs and tweak the clocks? I just want to know if EVGA will release there GTX300 series cards in March as well or if it takes longer for companies like EVGA to release there cards? Thanks for any help mate. =]
TokerMate 2 years ago
It sounds just like the norm. I'm saying that BECAUSE the 6000 series probably won't be released until a good time after the 300 series, I would consider the 5000 series a competitor, since they would be on the market in the same time. It boils down to preference. I could wait for the 300 series instead of getting a 5000, or I could wait for 6000 instead of 300, or I could wait for 400 instead of 6000, etc.
Acfeiln 2 years ago
the first part is what you said btw. But for example right now, the 5000 series and 200 series are close enough in performance that I would call them competitors, until the 300 series comes out.
And either of the options will play games for a long, long time.

DX10 went down because Vista grabbed at it while IT was falling. I reckon DX11 will do better, but not by a massive amount. there's still a heck of a lot more work to do to make a DX10 game than a DX9 one, and games like Dead Space and Fallout 3 prove that NOT being DX10 didn't stop anyone buying it, and unfortunately developers saw that.
naryanr 2 years ago

Also Voodoo 2, although it began to be shadowed by nVidia and their unified 2D/3D card with 32 bits z-buffer and color.
Voodoo 3 and therefore sucked big way, due to re-use of their old V2 technologies and not including 32-bit accuracy until it was way too late.
