This performance brought me to tears, especially when she hit that note at the end...sent chills down my spine. Still remember watching this performance for the first time. I knew after hearing this she would make it. Her voice is annointed.
This performance floored me. I taped this show that season and I watched this over and over again and remember how Barry Manilow was stunned by her. No one on that show could sing like that. Every mentor they had on that show that season knew they had found someone really special. Barry Manilow and then Elton John absolutely loved her. Simon did not.
0:53 to 0:59....one of the best glory notes in Idol history! This is easily one of my all time favorite Idol performances. J. Hud herself is easily my favorite female contestant ever and definitely top 3 overall favorite along with Bo Bice and David Cook. <3
@Agju I absolutely agree with you. That vocal climb she made from .53 to .59 is not something many people can do. She is simply amazing - a natural talent. AI voters rarely like powerhouse singers.
I did not watch American Idol season 3, but Jennifer Hudson is my favorite of that season. I was not at home when the results show that announced her elimination aired. I was taking piano lessons at the time. I would have been shocked at her elimination had I watched the show then. I have been watching American Idol since season 6. As of season 10, Jennifer Hudson is my 12th favorite American Idol ever. I ranked her at no. 11 among my top 36 in my last American Idol related video.
@TediusZanarukando yeah it was shocking, the 3 best singers her, fantasia and latoya london were in the bottom 3. they were known as the 3 divas. i think it was her and the eventual winner, fantasia in the bottom 2. what was even more shocking was when Elton John accused the show of racism. that was interesting lol but anywho she didnt need the show, she's a grammy and oscar winner!
I distinctly remember SCREAMING at the tv when she sang this. She fucking KILLED me. Layed me OUT baby! And when she didn't make it through, I literally cried. 30year old man crying. I didn't watch the rest of that season or the next. I cried again when I heard she got Dreamgirls. This woman is my HEART!

The song was obviously NOT BUTCHERED when Barry asked her to tour with him so that she could perform a duet, based upon what she brought NEW to that song! Did you not watch A.I. that season?

Me too! You know who she sounded exactly like? Helen Terry - Culture Club's backup singer from 1983-86. People thought Helen was black because she sounded like Aretha.
Jennifer Hudson did not butcher this song she re did the song under the direction of the original singer. She wasn't suppose to sound like him because she is Jennifer hudson. Jennifer has a way of singing that will give you chills. She sings with the God given talent that God has choose for her. Every song that she sings she adds her own spirtual meaning and flavor that's what music is about. Great job Jennifer truly great!

@irascible26 Im telling you....that song was butchered. I know she wanted to make the song her own style, but that was just brutal. Liek I said....she has a great voice and vocal range, just not the song she should have gotten fancy with. Its not a jab at her in any way. Many amazing artists have failed at covers because they tried to be "cute" with the style. Some songs you have to be careful with or just stay within the same genre or style
I personally did not like this performance that night I think Latoya fantasia and Diana beat her but she was better than jasmine George and John did not deserve to get eliminated really happy they all found sucess
this performance was amazing thankfully she has gone on to be a megastar and nothing less - different league to anyone i have heard in any idol competition.
Just think if those tornados didn't hit Chicago there might have been a diffrent winner of season 3, but this wasn't for her God wanted her for something else. She did Dreamgirls and became a star anyway. This was one of the best preformances in American Idol history
@playmakers780 I have to disagree. That Jennifer could adapt the song to a different genre and preserve the poignance and conviction of Barry Manilow's version is quite impressive. That's what a great recording artist does. (Besides, ballads take on numerous forms in music.)

I dont understand why she got voted off here! This was the best performance of the whole season!! Better than Fantasia's "Summer Time" performance and just as great, if not a notch better, than the week before, where she sang "Circle of Life!" I guess she just wasn't commercial enough for people to vote for her.
Truly one of the greatest moments in American Idol history. She was too much for the people to take. This was the performance that ended Jennifer's journey on American Idol...isn't that nuts?!?
I remember seeing the elimination of her when I was 10, I was devestated, but when she said "you'll see me again" like every contestant says, she mean't it, and she became one of the most famous and popular contestants ever. Love you jennifer :)

Jennifer Hudson is without a doubt one of the best singers America has to offer at the moment. She gives me goosebumps with every song she sings and has such range and power in her voice. This was the most shocking result of American Idol ever.....and the worst. She deserved to win, her and Fantasia shoulda been in the final, and Jennifer shoulda won. She is world class!

I have to agree, she did NOT deserve to be eliminated from the show. Jennifer Hudson's voice is so powerful and strong, but also very compassionate and shows a lot of feelings in her singing. I LOVE HER! Singing or acting, but she needs to sing more, waiting for the next album.

This is one of the best performances on Idol. It was Jennifer's swan song, too. What if she faced off with Fantasia instead of Diana deGarmo? That would be a great finale.
I think what happened was that Jennifer intimidated America.....Based on this performance, she basically told America that I am too big for American Idol. All in all, she was the best.

The best of the evening and one of her best Idol performances. I still return to youtube to replay it periodically. I wish she would record it as it it the best redition of this song I have ever heard. And that would INCLUDE Barry's. (With all due respect to Barry)

OK she can hold a tune and she has a powerful voice. She spoils what could be a winning performance time and time and time again by over shouting, overenunciating and, quite frankly, by being overannoying. It was not a surprise she was kicked out when she was. BOOOOORRRRRRINNG....!!!!!!!!!!!!
like many others, I was shocked that Jennifer didn't make it to the final 2, and was voted off early. However, I sort of feel she tried to do a bit too much with this song, or it was not a good song choice for her. I would have loved to hear her sing "My kind of town Chicago is" especially since she is from that city.
A head to head of Jennifer and Fantasia in the final would have been great theater and great music!
When I saw Jennifer sing this life, along with the other contestants on AI with Barry Manilow, I felt she was one of the top three...And I still believe that today! The fact that Jasmine, LaToya, George and John received more votes that week just proves that America doesn't know TRUE talent!
I find it ridiculous that people are comparing Idol's performances to others. These guys have to compact a whole song into a minute and a half, and in that time they have to showcase their range, power and interpretations of the songs, while people like Regine has the whole song to slowly build up emotions!
That said, I think Jennifer's voice has more of a body to it than Regine's
I agree ENTIRELY. Regine is a beast, and a great performer, but in no way is she superior to Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Jennfier Hudson. She is great, but she is most definitely not the best.

I don't think there is a finite strict "accurate" version of the song. Maybe in J. Hud's interpretation she is almost in pain/angry from not being able to hold him and see him. I feel like it's a perfectly valid interpretation... Even Barry Manilow, the original artist, thought so.

I agree with you, jobelleeuphorbia. Hudson is a great singer but this song does not suit her. Her voice is just too powerful for this song and she kind of overdid the runs and the belting and the song does not really need it that much. She kind of over sang this one. If she did just enough it would have been fine. And overall it would have been better if she sang it simpler with just the melody. I like Regine's version of this song best. By the way, I watched the original broadcast of this ep.
Jennifer Hudson is unbelievable. With performances like this, I think she was more powerful than Fantasia during Season 3. I remember watching this performance and was blown away! She delievers with such aggression and emotion. The song has such an emotional connection. I wish she would've recorded it on her album when it was posted on iTunes:( PHENOMINAL PERFORMANCE!!

This loud singer won and Oscar, has a recording contract and a great acting career....America knows real talent, some people don't, they just think they do. There was a lot of great talent in that season, but Jennifer was truly robbed.

There were too many good singers that season. The best season ever & I almost remember everyone on there. The voting was hard but someone had to go. Jennifer was my favorite from the beginning. It's like I could see a bright aura of stardom around her. It was her destiny to be a famous star. God tested her on AA then pulled her out to shine because she is so humble and never forgot about him on her way up. God Blessed Her.

I could how the viewers might have had another favorite that week, but to get so few votes that she was flat out eliminated was just crazy. America got it so wrong. Jennifer Hudson is, I dare to say, the best talent to come out of American Idol, Ever. As a person and as a performer, she is simply amazing.

Jennifer Hudson did not butcher this song she re did the song under the direction of the original singer. She wasn't suppose to sound like him because she is Jennifer hudson. Jennifer has a way of singing that will give you chills. She sings with the God given talent that God has choose for her. Every song that she sings she adds her own spirtual meaning and flavor that's what music is about. Great job Jennifer truly great!

Liek I said....she has a great voice and vocal range, just not the song she should have gotten fancy with. Its not a jab at her in any way. Many amazing artists have failed at covers because they tried to be "cute" with the style. Some songs you have to be careful with or just stay within the same genre or style

Just think if those tornados didn't hit Chicago there might have been a diffrent winner of season 3, but this wasn't for her God wanted her for something else. She did Dreamgirls and became a star anyway. This was one of the best preformances in American Idol history

I dont understand why she got voted off here! This was the best performance of the whole season!! Better than Fantasia's "Summer Time" performance and just as great, if not a notch better, than the week before, where she sang "Circle of Life!" I guess she just wasn't commercial enough for people to vote for her.

I remember seeing the elimination of her when I was 10, I was devestated, but when she said "you'll see me again" like every contestant says, she mean't it, and she became one of the most famous and popular contestants ever. Love you jennifer :)

Jennifer Hudson is without a doubt one of the best singers America has to offer at the moment. She gives me goosebumps with every song she sings and has such range and power in her voice. This was the most shocking result of American Idol ever.....and the worst. She deserved to win, her and Fantasia shoulda been in the final, and Jennifer shoulda won. She is world class!

I have to agree, she did NOT deserve to be eliminated from the show. Jennifer Hudson's voice is so powerful and strong, but also very compassionate and shows a lot of feelings in her singing. I LOVE HER! Singing or acting, but she needs to sing more, waiting for the next album.

I think what happened was that Jennifer intimidated America.....Based on this performance, she basically told America that I am too big for American Idol. All in all, she was the best.

I must say that I was shocked when I read the post that stated that Jennifer ovrreached w/ this arrangement. I could not disagree more. I thought she was flawless. The best of the evening and one of her best Idol performances. I still return to youtube to replay it periodically. I wish she would record it as it it the best redition of this song I have ever heard. And that would INCLUDE Barry's. (With all due respect to Barry)

like many others, I was shocked that Jennifer didn't make it to the final 2, and was voted off early. However, I sort of feel she tried to do a bit too much with this song, or it was not a good song choice for her. I would have loved to hear her sing "My kind of town Chicago is" especially since she is from that city.
A head to head of Jennifer and Fantasia in the final would have been great theater and great music!

I find it ridiculous that people are comparing Idol's performances to others. These guys have to compact a whole song into a minute and a half, and in that time they have to showcase their range, power and interpretations of the songs, while people like Regine has the whole song to slowly build up emotions!
That said, I think Jennifer's voice has more of a body to it than Regine's

I agree ENTIRELY. Regine is a beast, and a great performer, but in no way is she superior to Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Jennfier Hudson. She is great, but she is most definitely not the best.

I don't think there is a finite strict "accurate" version of the song. Maybe in J. Hud's interpretation she is almost in pain/angry from not being able to hold him and see him. I feel like it's a perfectly valid interpretation... Even Barry Manilow, the original artist, thought so.
Regine is good too though. Asia's songbird. :]

Jennifer but as much emotion/soul as regine did. Infact, did better at bringing the soul too it, you can tell by her tone. Plus, you don't need soft belts too make it sound "emotional". Do you know what emotion even means when people are using it in singing? Oh...btw, please don't choose Regine as the better sanger just 'cause you're the same race as her.

I agree with you, jobelleeuphorbia. Hudson is a great singer but this song does not suit her. Her voice is just too powerful for this song and she kind of overdid the runs and the belting and the song does not really need it that much. She kind of over sang this one. If she did just enough it would have been fine. And overall it would have been better if she sang it simpler with just the melody. I like Regine's version of this song best. By the way, I watched the original broadcast of this ep.

Jennifer Hudson is unbelievable. With performances like this, I think she was more powerful than Fantasia during Season 3. I remember watching this performance and was blown away! She delievers with such aggression and emotion. The song has such an emotional connection. I wish she would've recorded it on her album when it was posted on iTunes:( PHENOMINAL PERFORMANCE!!

It is obvious that Manilow liked Jen's version because he invited her to perform
this song with him on another show. Jennifer has a powerful voice, but she showed that she can also moderate it like she did with some of the songs on her cd. That was her best performance on American Idol.

This loud singer won and Oscar, has a recording contract and a great acting career....America knows real talent, some people don't, they just think they do. There was a lot of great talent in that season, but Jennifer was truly robbed.

There were too many good singers that season. The best season ever & I almost remember everyone on there. The voting was hard but someone had to go. Jennifer was my favorite from the beginning. It's like I could see a bright aura of stardom around her. It was her destiny to be a famous star. God tested her on AA then pulled her out to shine because she is so humble and never forgot about him on her way up. God Blessed Her.

I dont know about her pre idol days but its true her story does lend well to a movie... kicked off idol in shock elimination, lands movie, gets oscar lands recording deal, family murdered, gets grammy from idol, steals show...now all she needs to do is become a legend
