@Estella1507 well Liza Minnelli played the role for a while and she stumbled over dialogue and was just generally off, so it may have been one of her performances. or one of Raquel Welch's.
@TheCherryBomber1: no my dad distinctly remembers it was Julie Andrews. I just asked him, and he knew right of the bat... but I still can't believe they did it.
I think this version of Victor Victoria is far far better than the movie. The movie I find kind of depressing. This I find has more energy and good spirit.
Julie Andrews was right back where she belonged when this show opened.
So sad her lovely voice is gone. Very sad indeed. But at least she's keeping her head high and moving on. That's the important thing.
She actually became famous via broadway and the west end in the Boyfriend, My Fair Lady and Camelot before she got to the movies ;) (and she started off her career as a kid in vaudeville and radio)
I heard Julie is set on getting her voice back. T hatbutcher who cut on her is a jerk. I'd like to hear Julie in concert, she has learned to use what voice she has. She sang to a group of AARP people a while back, she sang her own version of My Favorite Things, with some words and verses that fit the problems seniors can develop. She brought down the house and had to do more than one encore. It sounds like she has still got it.
This song is a very good history lesson. I learned a lot. Julie Andrews is wonderful. It is too bad about her voice. Also the whole Broadway show was just taken off youtube.
Awesome, thanks for posting!! I love this production not only because Julie Andrews was wonderful, but also because the dancers and other actors had a lot of charisma! It was a complete package :)
It's a pity she can't sing as well as she used to be, just remember the good old days from "The Sound of Music". I've seen the clip with Liza as well. But you know, no one else comes close when you match with Julie Andrews. Besides her singing, it's her charm that counts.
I'm pretty sure this is the Broadway show that lost her her voice. She developed nodules and had them removed in 1997 and now she only has a few bass notes. Such a horrible tragedy. Four octaves to only about 5 notes as she puts it.
that in the princess diaries was only 5 notes or so and it wasnt really singing it was kinda talking. her voice is slowly coming back though, she is doing several concerts this summer with a very limited range, but hey that works with me!
I can't believe she was 60 when she began this on broadway. She is such an amazing person and it is such a shame she haad to quit the show because of her throat! Miss her singing voice...she was and still is the best!
if you think Julie wasn't quite singing the way she used to( I saw it on broadway in 1995 and actually it was quite good, the note at the end of "le jazz hot" was actually pre-recorded ...and not even very good, but she herself was lovely, new face lift and all..)then you should see the bootleg video I have of Liza Minelli in that show(she replaced Julie during a vacation)...at least Julie was SINGING, Liza was screaming! :-)...but in a strange way very funny !
Wow! Is this on DVD? I've seen a lot of shows on Broadway but never have I been more starstruck than when I saw Victor/Victoria! Seeing Julie Andrews on stage and in great voice made it a night never to be forgotten. Thanks for posting the video!
