i laughed when he talked about optical drive performance suffering when you put them on their side. reminded me of when the imac we have at work fucked up when we tried to burn a disc.
@DustinTROM I saw an Apple patent awhile ago that showed an articulating screen. Sort of a cross between the current iMac L-shaped stand and the 2nd-generation sunflower design. Allows the user to pull the screen close and near-horizontal for multitouch. That alone gives me great hope that we'll continue to see great things in the coming years!
Btw, this iMac reminds me a lot of Luxo Jr., the lamp that tramples the Pixar logo before every one of their movies :) More kudos to Steve for Pixar :))
Turns out to be the next couple of years. The truly all-in-one G5 was released in 2004. This just shows how Steve and Apple kept outperforming themselves beyond their initial expectations.
It's a product of its time.Back then the drives didn't perform well vertically. Later developments remove those constraints. But the case design is a thing to behold. I run a 20" one as kitchen/jukebox machine. What a beauty.
@Virgofenix Very true - it was a completely unique yet ergonomic design. I believe that it was quite an expensive design to produce too, circular logic board and the LCD 'arm' in particular, so it isn't surprising that they went the 'big iPod' design route when they got around the issues with the vertical optical drive and making it thin enough, particularly as the screens got bigger and heavier.
He last 2004 incarnation with 20" LCD, 1.25GHz and up to 2GB RAM still holds up pretty well with Leopard. I can run any of the indispensable kitchen computer apps on it including Spotify, Filezilla :) and VLC. I added a 500GB IDE drive and a quiet fan.
Getting the heat transfer paste renewed at the CPU heat pipe improves on the quiteness. Still inner airflow is restricted due to the huge superdrive and HDD. LCD is very high quality.
Anyone notice.. how he says the bit starting at 1:17 would have fatal flaws? Uhmm that's very reminiscent of the iMac G5 / Intel iMac design lol. Talking about how the logic board would be behind the display, and the optical drive would be slower lol. I just thought that was funny.. That's pretty much what the next generation iMac was.. Only much nicer =)
Apple had creative idea before, and now they have elegant idea (without making some colorful and radical designed Mac but instead making Elegant alumunium Mac)
its sad that it cant play games like left 4 dead, half life, half life 2, and many others. in fact even steam for mac probably wont run on this computer right because even though it has a sexy processor, it dosent have a sexy graphics card, a sexy amount of memory, nor any other components needed.
@pokewhiz7 Not everyone needs 10GB of RAM or a high end video card. These are targeted at people who need a bit more than basic computing power, but want the space-saving of an all-in-one. I personally live in a small apartment in Brooklyn, and don't have room for a large setup, so my 27" iMac is the perfect fit for the small amount of space that I do have.
Not to mention that it's basically replaced my television as well.
I'm a PC guy, but my university had a Mac computer lab filled with just these Mac G4's, and they were the most beautifully designed computers ever! So much fun to use, and to swivel the display :) I don't know why these went away.
They should sell these again bcuz it's like the best mac design ever and it could be cheaper now and they would still make millions cuz let's face it who doesn't want one
@PrancerTube it probobly is, i have an old imac g3 and it does everything except youtube. it cant use fb apps but im pretty sure a g4 with enough ram can.
that is awesomely designed. If only we could add the new technology(leopard) and the new intel chips to this with ilife 08, and of course an isight camera it would be like the most awesome imac ever
Yepp; and I still prefer this design--most attractive computer ever made. The new aluminum ones look pretty sleek tho--but they use mostly laptop parts which is a flaw with that thin slab design :-(
Especially sine software is starting to require at least a G5 (like iMovie '08) so it is now really being obsoleted (at least leopard will work on it)

It's even more of a waste when you consider they use some terrible text-based user interface inside Mac OS X.
