  • 13 meters? Bah, my biology professor told me that they can grow to be maybe 20 meters long and weigh up to 880kg. But those are the really huge ones that live at 200-1000 meters depth, you rarely see one of those.

  • but b4 there was a bigger one when that one died others came that were a bit smaller

  • I thought architeuthis had claws instead of suction cups.

  • I saw the squid at 2:40 on some tv show (:

  • The Squids caught aren't THAT big..and a 13 metre one? I doubt they'll come up to the surface for fun, let alone to attack a ship!

    All Folklore...

  • 4 meters is huge, imagine a 13m one! and ye there is probly more stuff down there we dont know about

  • Oye mi´jo tu video es chafa no tiene sonido, pero contiene buena información espero seas lo suficientemente inteligente para comprender estas lineas y no que seas un cerdo estadounidense carente de cerebro como lo son la mayoría.

  • I NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO

i liked this video :) Ki

  • The Bacon Brother worte a song all about this

  • Giant Squids have been known to hide in your closet and spread gossip - NEVER discuss marital issues within earshot - and if your credit cards have a slime film: cancel immediately.

Also, never let one near your computer, what they can do to your face in Photoshop you DON'T want to know ...

  • people should stop worrying about going to mars and space travel for now all we need up their is satellites and thats it for now but what we need to worry about is what is in the ocean we no more about the moon than the ocean thats bullcrap

  • That is the craziest shit ever. Who knows what else can be deeper down the ocean cant wait until they discover an even bigger squid.

  • picture 2 and 5 are of the exact same squid sorry

  • yeah.. but the cossosol squid looked bad becuz it was like half frozen.. =\

  • you wanna see big!? Go 1000 ft. under the Gulf of Mexico!

  • I've seen squid as big as blue whales!!!!!

  • no u havent!!!

  • the squid at 02.30 is over 60 ft. long!

If that animal was a colossal squid the length would have been 120 ft. thats bigger than a blue whale!

  • the squid at 2:30 is actually estimated at 26 feet long from the 18 foot tentacle that broke off of it as they tried catching it.

  • can't squids regroe tenticals?

  • a truly beautiful creature...

  • thats the coolest animal ever

  • bastards killing those squids... squids kick ass. giant squid (architeuthis) are ok but colossal squid - Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni are even better. the largest ever measured was 56ft! now thats a monster...

  • theres a story i read that back in WWII a sailor was fishing off his ship and he saw a green glow,he wondered and wondered what that large glow could be...when he realized it was an eye, then he realized it was a squid,he walked down the boat and the squid was just a little shorter than his boat...his boat was 175 feet long, this squid was atleast 100 feet long.

  • dude. there is no sound. Hello? not very interesting

    ~JAS

  • thats well mad watch a doc on them the other day impressive creatures

  • oh wait, way for me to read these comments. seems like mr transformer there has seen it. so hes the one..

  • hasnt anyone seen that video yet of the supposed architeuthis that looks to be larger than a whale? why am i the only person that has seen it? its on youtube..

  • vampirecephalopod i have seen too!

  • Are there videos of them?

  • In the sea of cortez a group of american scientist and divers cought in film what they beleived to be a species of the architeuthis.

film experts studied the still photos and they concluded that this squid they cought in film was Ginormous and surpasses the largest squid ever recorded!!!

it was believed to have been over 60 feet long

    proximitly around 200FEET!!!

surpassing the largest animal the (baleoneptera musculus)or commonly known as the blue whale!!!

  • where'd you get this info? are there any pictures? please reply!

  • its in monster quest from the history channel.

    CHECK IT OUT!!!!

  • looks like a humble squid for some reason but they can only get 1-2.5 meter what i have heard

  • Japanese just seem to have all the luck.

  • or that is the area that they live.

  • i dont think there the biggest discovery there like 100's or 1000 of fossil fish that live in the dark sea

  • the white guy at the end was on wild boyz hahaha

  • most of the pictures here probably shows "child"-giant squids, but the two pictures at 2:25-2:46 is said to show a full grown giant squid, and as you will notice, there is no lenght description, but it is to be around 13-20 meters. try wathing the 13:00 minutes long film "giant squid" on youtube, because that explains a lot.

  • damn there so much smaller then i thaught!

  • And how many dicks have u seen that look like that yi spaz

  • Man youre right it does look like a giant dick xD

  • From what I learned years back, the larger Archteuthis can be aggressive when hungry or threatened and prefers to dwell in very deep water. Would be incredible if a 40 or 50 footer were captured or photgraphed alive.

  • unga good shit eh?

  • do squids grow back their tenticles if they lose one?

  • we know only 10% of the sea. theres tousends of creatures we dont know who live deep into the sea. but its hard to get to there. you need a good sub marine. with lights. its dark beucse its soo deep

  • Great Video...

  • My point is that just because an animal doesn't eat meat it doesn't mean it's stupid. Take turtles, your example of a stupid animal. Sea turtles can survive for hundreds of years and they haven't evolved much over the last century, proving that their current state is practically perfect.

  • your points are flawed

  • Just because an animal doesn't eat meat doesn't mean it's stupid. The whale shark doesn't eat meet and it's been around for years.

And the difference between humans killing something and eating it and let's say a fox killing a rabbit is that humans will take the edible parts and dispose of the rest of the animal. The fox will take the rabbit and feed it to its family and use its carcass to the fullest of means, like even eating the marrow from the bones of the rabbit.

  • lol what an idiot... you get pissed at jarkramclean for eating something thats already dead... fucking animal activists are idiots you don't see fucking deer protesting against bears because they're eating them i say as long as your eating the animal it's okay hunting killing for mass production its not like we're wasting the animals but i do find it a bit cruel the way they kill them they should be more swift.

  • Ay carumba!! Enough calamari rings there to feed me and the tribe for a year!! *calls out to the missus in the kitchen*..."Hey love, breakout the breadcrubs and heat up the deep fryer!!!!"

  • jammer dat die beesten altijd gelijk dood moeten

  • Humboldt*

  • That squid is Hamond.Architeuthis dux is almost 20meters.

  • why the hell are all the squids in jap water.

i gusses they hate the use

  • aghhh! the depths of the ocean freak me out! u never know wat huge creature is lurking.

  • Jesus, that's huge. Creepily so. These slideshows are very well made and informative, you're doing a great job.

  • Why thank you very much, much appreciated! Architeuthis is an awesome animal and I thought it was worth sharing some of the lesser known images of the beast to anyone interested.

I'd love'd to have added some video footage from the last catch in Japan - maybe one day I'll work out how to do it.

  • oh and you humane morons need to grow up no one knows hoe many there are they dont purposefully kill them you fucking twats the squid kill themselves they contort their gelatinous bodies to get free and wind up tearing their tentacles or arms off they are trying to learn about them the only way they can and please dont compare animal research with modern day human vs. human conflicts it belittles you

  • great slide show im glad to see you're well read not many people know that there are several species of colossal squid the fourth i believed looked like a Mesonychoteuthis Hamiltoni, but i know its architeuthis in the story i read they had tore off the

tantacles in the struggle before it fled

  • Heh, ignorance is bliss sometimes. I thought they were all tied under "Giant Squid" before I saw this. On ignorance, if it's specualted that squid much larger than this are lurking undiscovered, what else is out there that we don't know about?

  • Teeferab1 your a squid hugging hippie yes the ocean's eco-system's should be respected, but saying that Japan should have been NUKED maybe four of five times, because of a giant squid is sick. I Guess the 140,000 PEOPLE that died because of the Hiroshima Bomb mean nothing to you. If you want to kill humans and save animals why don't you become one of those arsonist FUCKS that work for P.E.T.A. P.S how many squid died when the U.S tested their atomic bombs in the ocean. You ignorant FUCK

  • mmmmm. wonder if there is a giant octopus as well... mmmmm.........

  • Alitle bad english but I know that in 1987 the largest 10 armed octopus was 17 meters long...

  • yes, i did "saw" the fourth one, and it was big :P

  • since its so hard to find giant squids it makes you wonder what else we cant find...

  • did anybody saw the 4th one, damn thats big.

  • 24 ft immature female!!! how big do you think they get!

  • yes but how is it possible there are even smaller ones? . . i.e because there something big that produced it? or do small ones just sprout from shit, eh? of course theres heaps of things under the water no one knows about, its in ourselves to study what we do not know, its called curiosity not stupididty or cruelty

  • The Japs are bad in that way, killing certain creatures in the "name of science" is crap, they are liars and have absolutely no honor despite what they think or say, they should have dropped more of those bombs at the end of WW2, four or five would have beeen good.

  • your are a idiot, better you put a bomb in your ass.

  • I dont want to raise further controversy. Im american by the way, so dont get all racist on me. The Japanese are great people. They are leaders in technology, the arts, and many fields of science. Just because a squid died, doesnt mean that they should be nuked... at all. You are ignorant and give americans a terrible name. Its not like they tortured it or anything, it died. It has no more feelings then the squid they use to feed the fucking batrays at seaworld.

  • if we can, we'd put these things into slavery

  • regretably,

most of these animals are found in japanese waters. unfortunately for them, hapanese have no remorse for the well beings of animals (and most probably humans) alike.

with reference to the whale hunting they have been doing for "science".

japanese are morons. they whales. EW you guys digsust me.

  • just because a squid dies makes a whole race of people disgusting and diserve to die? first, these are scientists, all japanese are not scientists are they? All nations on this planet have had their share of animals dieing while having data collected.. after that mars rover came back the US Scientists do with living organisms they accedentally killed them. that is not against the American people, but against the scientist who was doing it! so stop this racist shit and get your F-ing heads right!

  • amazing creatures, the things that lurk beneath are frightening!!

  • sushi any one

  • he's right, i live in China and you should see all the poor poeple begging for money and the rich poeple spending 20,000 yen on a party dinners.

  • I kill giant squids 'cause they're delicious with koala steak and curry. Why do you care?

  • "why do people insist on killing one another?" seems like a better question. lets saves the animals after the women and children. okay?

  • y do people always insist on killing them?!?! ITS SO FUCKING RETARDED! maybe a full grown one has never been found because we KILL THEM BEFORE THEY HAVE A CHANCE TO GROW!!! >=(

  • yah i agree.. some people are so dumb that they kill anything they see that's extraordinary

  • We don't catch them that often.

  • woah. big squid. o.o

  • And to think that they have actually found squid arms as long as 40 meters! that's sick!

  • the size of these creatures does make if pheasable for one to sink a small ship so maybe some of the old sailing stories arent fake.cause those ships back then were only about 30 meters long

  • That's Superstitious, matey.

  • i wanted to see y the F*** they write it for

  • I would sooner stick my dick in a fishtank full of manowars then face off with one of those, what a pianful way to die

  • To p00p6 et al. I've always considered architeuthus dux to be THE most dangerous animal of all time. Imagine an extreme 20m specimen (which means a spread legspan of about 40m). So anything within its 40m range is immediate prey and of course it can move fast, whip its legs round, hook and sucker you, squirt ink, bite you, wrap round you, see you with the world's largest 45cm advanced eyes. A well scary creature.

  • Thanks for this.

  • Uh, not terribly familiar with the metric system.

  • all the giant squid photos in one place, with good info as well. thanks for the vid!

  • can you imagine being in the water with one of those monsters?! It'd be like trying to fight of 12 snakes, plus a giant beak, plus their water jets that can blast you.

  • oh my, that is a big 1

  • I ment the japan one the video taped

  • It was actually 8 or 9 meters long.

  • some musin would have been nice

  • its giving me the evil eye!

  • mido ban??

  • How can all scientists be stupid, ur using a machine built by scientists, to watch a film made using science, from pictures taken with cameras; a product of science. Wat a fukin dolt

  • people that made these machines did so for a purpose, moreso they are inventors as opposed to a scientest. you- not so smart.

  • Is that a serious comment? These machines were invented as products of scientific development. An inventor is a scientist you fucking moron. you - An undereducated loud mouth cunt.

  • for starters, you're a cunt, and so is your mum. secondly. anyone that kills innocent animals (such as whales) as disguctingly as they do, for the sake of "research", dont deserve any label other than pathetic incompetents.

you can have that label too if you want. for free. cheers.

  • Seriously, what the fuck are you on about? Immature PRICK!

  • Im eating whale right now:D Go go norway with leagal whale fishing

  • Go go fuck yourself

  • i will! while i smear whale blood all over my ass

  • mmm whale meat is the greatest

  • By retrieved for study, they actually mean poached illegally, chopped up and served as sashimi.

  • Dang that first squid was huge!

  • my uncle saw a program on the tv of a 90ft giant squid but they can insternalise themselves(make themselves smaller) and fit through a hole a square inch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • no they can't, you idiot.

  • octopi can do that too!

  • Actually, I'm inclined to believe moviedude. Giant squids are deep-ocean dwelling animals. The atmospheric pressure (I have no idea if this is the proper term), but the external pressure surrounding the giant squid is much higher than the 14psi surrounding us. If a deep-sea creature is lifted up too quickly to the surface, they explode. If we went to the bottom of the ocean too quickly without protection, we'd implode. However, I do not doubt that giant squid live.

  • how can all scientis be wrong, u r the stupid

  • all the scientist are stuupid! the squid need the same water and same water pressure to live GOD!!!

  • scientists are the ones who discovered the fact you just stated. So not all of them can be stupid.

  • nice collection of images, very interesting shit, but i wont be impressed till we get the technology to go down as far as those fuckers can, once we can get down there, we will see the real monsters, these so - called legendary 20 m giant and collosal squid...and who knows what else

  • i wonder what it taste like. giant calamari...mmm

  • mmm... in ink...mmmmmmmmm

  • grow up... cant you think of anything rather than making this great creature into a calamari? stupid ass

  • As for the taste, I recommend you read The Search for the Giant Squid: The Biology and Mythology of the World's Most Elusive Sea Creature by Richard Ellis. He writes that a group of scientists cooked one in order to find out the answer to the very same question. It wasn't palatable, however, due to the high levels of ammonia.

  • If removing it from it's habitat in nature, only to keep having them die is not worth it. People need to find a way to study special case sea creatures better in their own world, without always having them perish. Terrible! Leave nature's life alone or find much safer ways to study.

  • Word!

  • nice video, the pictures were really high-quality, giant squids are really awesome animals

  • wait, so they shot them in their natural habitat? holy shit, i didnt think anyone has ever done tha. I knew like they found dead ones, but not alive!

  • Gklad you liked it SFforlife. Well, I suppose the only time the giant squid has been filmed in its natural habitat were via the sequence of still images Dr Kubodera obtained as they were taken at depth. The others are all animals that have been caught and trawled up on a line before being filmed and are therefore not behaving naturally. One wonders if others have been sighted before but never reported; I bet there are a few 'one that got away' stories amongst a select few Japanese fishermen.

  • I think so.. great video! Such mysterious and amazing creatures!

  • great for squid lovers. especially the comments.

  • Thanks Marzli. I'd liked to have included some video footage at the end relating to the December 06 to liven it up a little, but I couldn't work out how to do it.

Architeuthis is a fascinating animal. You know its oesophagus is only 1cm across? It must utterly pulverise fish and shrimp with its beak to pass through to the stomach.
