That was an interesting combination of a video camera zoom and telescope - it was REALLY hard to hold the camera still while the moon passed... Oddly, I can't seem to get my current (and much better) equipment to duplicate it! Thanks so much for checking it out =)
It's interesting how the heatwaves in the atmosphere cause that cool liquid-ish wavey distortion... Ironically, it is an effect which sky photographers and astronomers usually try to avoid by placing their telescopes on high altitude peaks or in space. :-) Thanks so much for visiting!
Yep - I do use CHDK and the Ultra Intervalometer script on both my S5 and SX10. Prior to using CHDK, I just used a clotheshanger bent into a "C" shape to hold the shutter button down in continuous shooting mode - which allows faster shooting (in daytime) than with CHDK. However, you can turn off the dark frame subtraction with CHDK for night shooting, where faster frame-to-frame times are less important. All good stuff! :-)
Thanks for sharing this:) There is nothing better than being outdoors in the evening and staring out into the universe. Love looking at the night sky. It's so beautiful and relax my mind:) Amazing:)
I agree - I always enjoy watching the sky, and going through the images I shoot automatically all night long - you never know what might show up! Thanks so much for visiting! :-)
The cameras used for these sequences are Canon S5 and SX10, non-DSLR models, which aren't made any more. However, these models and their newer replacements go for about $400. Filming the night sky is a great hobby, and you never know what you might capture! :-)
Hi Bill, Nice t' meetcha! I like the Canon non-DSLR cameras for basic time lapse work. I use the S5-is and SX10-is myself, but both are no longer made. Most models have a continuous shooting mode so you just hold down the shutter button to collect your frames. Also, the firmware hack "CHDK" is available for many Canon models, with scripts for intervalometer functions. I typically shoot at one frame every 1-2 seconds, and playback at 30fps for smooth video. Cheers and keep up the good work! :-)
I bet your view is much better than mine - I'm right in the middle of town, but still there are some nights with a clear sky when I manage to get some decent shots. :-) Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great vid. Where approxately in santa clarita did you shoot theses sequences? Up boquet cyn? or maybe sierra hywy? Otherwise there's too much light pollution in town... We live in a beautiful valley no doubt! I thuoght the music went well with the sequences... Way to go!
Thanks so much for the great comment! You might be surprised to find that nearly all my night (and day) sky footage is shot right in town, from my back yard. There is a lot of light pollution most of the time but when the Santa Anas blow and (and ither times) when the air is really clear, the city lights don't haze-out the sky so much, and are great times for filming. You can, however, still see a more stars if you get out of town a ways. :-)
Oh how Home sick these gems make me.The music used I know being guided to you by our Star Families to do just this. :-) So glad your vid was here to greet me on a beginning 5days into the New Moon. So glad you're enjoying my music and video creations :-) Pretty much all of my sky vids are best enjoyed in full screen HD with lights out and headphones. Happy watching/listening! =)
LOVELY~ pretty pretty! I dropped my jaw on the ground when I saw that awesome close up of the moon! Then I picked it back up and tried to find the untied states flag! LOL. And at 2:10, I think that's a constellation right? Adromeda maybe? It looks like the chains and stuff. There's actually a face, (smiley) and I named it my constellation! but now being able to see all of it, it really looks like Andromeda to me! Is it? And the music was awesome! That's the music I really like. :D
I've been watching for more nights when the moon is just a sliver so I can get some better footage like that. Still haven't manage it yet...
The constellation at 2:10 is Orion, one of the very few that I know! You'll see him show up in a LOT of my vids. Probably because of the direction (generally south) I usually shoot at night.:-)
I got that shot by holding my JVC miniDV camcorder up to the eyepiece of a small telescope! I'm not sure of the power, but I would guess it's somewhere between 70x and 100x. Without an adapter it's a hard shot to get since you have to hold the camcorder at exactly the right spot - within a couple of millimeters. :-)
I also love the music by Technician, it relishes the ethereal beauty. I could spend so much time idly just by watching this over and over, and I might just do that. :D

I don't think my comment showed up, so I will write another one. I feel that you should know, how grateful I am for your videos!~ I always come back to watch them and they leave me feeling majestic, calm, and overcome with awe. The beauty you capture is so rare to see, in the way you show it. Thanks for the wonderful perspective and the time you put into these videos.

watching this makes me chill out and the music is tranquil ,i cant wait for the summer in the uk ,so i can go camping again i love sunrises sunsets and the clear night skys thanks again ( ps,without sounding stupid where do you take most of your pics )thanks .
Nearly all of my footage is shot in Santa Clarita, California (just north of Los Angeles). Most of the sky sequences (including the star movies) I shoot right from my back yard.
The setting here is mostly suburban, a town of 300,000+ people with plenty of light pollution, but even so, there still nights when the devil winds blow, making the sky is surprisingly clear - good nights to set the camera out! :-)
Just a generic housing tract in Newhall. I try to keep the man-made objects out of the shots as much as possible so the shots look like they could be taken from any tree-lined place. When I get out of the "tree hole" as I call my yard, I can get some more panoramic views, so SCV landmarks and terrain will be easier to spot. :-)
I understand it's a lot of hours streched in just 3 minutes time so... a shooting star would go by so fast that it wouldn't draw a line in the sky (time lapse taken into consideration)... so what are those 'traveling' stars drawing lines in the sky? What are those? I see them every night... going really really slow across the sky...
You're right - meteors are so fast that they only appear on one frame, and are usually very faint. I have captured only a few of them so far. The bright streaks you see in these sequences are the navagation lights on passing aircraft. Depending on shutter speed and aircraft altitude/speed, they can appear on a number of frames and look like shooting stars, only much brighter. You may also see reflected sunlight from satellites just after dusk. They're faint and slow moving. :-)
All of these were shot as a sequence of still images using a Canon 5S-is on a tripod. Each sequence is the result of several hours-worth of image captures. :-)
this is so, so amazing...and you show the moon so nearly!!!.. more as 5*
.I´ve a telescope..and the nightsky is so interesting..but my telescope is to simple..lol I can´t see all the planets around us not really nearly and clear...
I have a basic telescope, too - I can more-or-less see the closer planets, but Jupiter and Saturn are about as far as it gets, and they're not very interesting when they're that small and hard to see.
I will be shooting more star sequences in the future... Thanks for checking this one out and the nice comment :-)
Santa Clarita must be a beautiful place... Surprinsing I've only seen like 5 or 6 falling stars in my whole life, and there are more than 15 just on this video! Once again, beautiful!
The skies can be pretty nice here at times. With long exposures I get to see some cool stuff that you can't see with the naked eye. What appears to be shooting stars in this video are mostly airplane navigation lights, although I have captured a few meteorites on video in the past.
No they are not airplanes. These traveling lights usually disappear behind a star... you can still see the star... but not the other one... like they were traveling upwards... and there's lots of them but not every day.
The streaks you see in this video are defnitely aircraft. However, the slow-moving lights you described (that look like stars) are almost certainly satellites. They're usually faint, and appear to move slowly (even though they are travelling at 17,000+ Mph in orbit) across the sky, usually within an hour or two after dark, or before dawn when the sun hits them. The Space Shuttle and Space Station can also bee seen this way, and are much larger and brighter.
Howdy, neighbor! Isn't it surprising that we can see see the stars (sometimes) around here? It's not the small town it used to be! Thanks for stopping by :-)
Once I get my camera "tuned" better for night sky work, I'll try to get some different contellations. Seems like I'm focused on Orion most of the time! :-)
Thanks so much for watching! I'd like to be able to get better night images, too. My camera can pick up the stars, but has a really tought time "seeing" the Milky Way. :-)
All these sequences were shot with a Canon 5S-is digital still camera on a tripod. The shutter and aperature were set to maximum; 15-second exposure and f2.7 (wide open). I would still ike to get better light sensitivity, since I know there are way more stars up there (I can see them!) than the camera is capturing :-)
There are some interesting shapes in that sequence, but I was unable to make out lady liberty in any of them. So much for MY imagination! XD Thanks for watching and commenting =)
I am somewhere in between amateur and professional, and do this more for personal enjoyment than for work, although I do take the occasional photo/video job, and do license my work as stock footage for scientific, movie and commercial purposes.
My pleasure! Thanks again for all your attention! I'm now shooting my stuff in HD so future night sequences should be much clearer than those in this video. :-)
Alma - grab a pair of inexpensive field binoculars (or borrow a dust pair from a friend) and go out away from the city lights one night and just take in the light show; sure there are planes out there too - but you can't help but see falling stars, meteorites and who knows what else out there!
A beautiful video. There`s alot of light pollution where I live, so I love seeing videos of the night sky. I saw something strange a couple of weeks ago, and I wish I had a camera to record it. It was night time, and I was looking up at the full moon , when I noticed that there was a large dark circle around the moon. The circle was significantly darker than the rest of the night sky. I`d never seen anything like that before.
Unfortunately there is a lot fo light pollution here too, but when the winds blow off-shore the skies clear enough to get some decent shots. The dark moon halo is an effect caused by a thin film of cirrus clouds covering the whole sky. Where the light rays refract through the ice crystals at just the right angle they creates a circular rainbow effect, although at night it shows-up as areas of dark and light rather than colors. This happens to the sun during the daytime too. :-)
All of these scenes, and most of my newer HD footage was shot with a Canon 5S-is digital still camera. I've got nearly a million frames logged in on this camera now. It's quite a workhorse! As cool as this is, I'd still ike something with a little better light sensitivity for night work. I know there are WAY more stars up there - I just can't get them onto the "film" :-)
I am working on an HD version of this with composited images (star trail effect) and more.... Should make the spinny-rock effect even more interesting! Thanks for stopping by :-)
So glad you enjoyed... there's always room for more stars (even a million), and the HD stuff is on the way! Thanks for watching and the great comment :-)
i love this video... i could actually feel the earth move as the stars passed by... and wow.. so many activities in the sky... the clouds, the meteors.. it's so sad that as we sleep, we're missing the beauty of the night sky....
The camera used for these is a Canon 5s-is. I had the aperature, ISO, and exposure time maxed-out to get these shots. ...and of course many long nights of shooting! Thanks for watching :-)
Hmmmm big sky. I like that! Sounds like my kind of place. Speaking of big, dark sky... that reminds of a trip to Mammoth, CA a number of years back. The altitude was about 8000', it was freezing cold, sky was pitch black, crystal clear, and the Hale-Bopp Comet was running. I didn't realize the comet tail covered half the sky. Most spectacular night spectacle I've ever seen. ...and me without a timed-exposure camera!
Wow. This is by far the best time lapse vid I've seen and you say it's not your best? The pics & music worked really well together. I'm looking forward to checking out more of your work. Very inspirational.
So glad you liked it! :-) I think my newer stuff is higher quality, (especially the HD ones) and there are certainly some very spectacular time lapse vids coming out all over the place in HD now. I'm working on an HD stargazer vid, and I favorited an excellent vid just this morning, showing fall foliage in Kyoto, Japan. Do check it out :-)
Fantastic time lapses! The amount of air traffic in the sky is astounding! The Earthglow on that setting crescent is quite simply amazing! You have a great talent.
We really do get a ton of aircraft around here - both low and high altitude. Those sequences aren't even my busiest ones. Thanks so much for watching and the great comment :-)

Nice video/time lapse and choice of music!
I have just started to dabble in time lapse and posting on You Tube (feel free to check them out).
I did my time lapse with a Canon still camera (SD790is) which has 1fps and 2 fps.
The samsung F40 has nice features but not too good a review to me. The JVC with the 2 SD slots is tempting and within my budget.
What camera do you use? and what would you recomend?
Digital regards,
BiLL (Brooklyn, NY)

Thanks so much for watching! I'd like to be able to get better night images, too. My camera can pick up the stars, but has a really tought time "seeing" the Milky Way. :-)

Thanks for uploading,it's amazing and beautiful to look at! how was it filmed?
mkr88lm 2 years ago
All these sequences were shot with a Canon 5S-is digital still camera on a tripod. The shutter and aperature were set to maximum; 15-second exposure and f2.7 (wide open). I would still ike to get better light sensitivity, since I know there are way more stars up there (I can see them!) than the camera is capturing :-)

that's unbelievable...job well done...keep up the good work! where is santa clarita?
mkr88lm 2 years ago
Santa Clarita is about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, California, in the USA . :-)

at about 1:00 the green clouds passing by almost look like the statue of liberty with the right amount of imagination

There are some interesting shapes in that sequence, but I was unable to make out lady liberty in any of them. So much for MY imagination! XD Thanks for watching and commenting =)

AlmaTheElder 2 years ago
Alma - grab a pair of inexpensive field binoculars (or borrow a dust pair from a friend) and go out away from the city lights one night and just take in the light show; sure there are planes out there too - but you can't help but see falling stars, meteorites and who knows what else out there!
Peace, Love and LIght.

I`d never seen anything like that before.
fuzzycabin 2 years ago
Unfortunately there is a lot fo light pollution here too, but when the winds blow off-shore the skies clear enough to get some decent shots. The dark moon halo is an effect caused by a thin film of cirrus clouds covering the whole sky. Where the light rays refract through the ice crystals at just the right angle they creates a circular rainbow effect, although at night it shows-up as areas of dark and light rather than colors. This happens to the sun during the daytime too. :-)

Thanks for the info. It was the first time I`d seen that natural phenomenon; hopefully, it will not be the last. :)

Very beautiful, what kind of camera did you use to make this footage? (if you don't mind my asking) linda
Futurist54 2 years ago
All of these scenes, and most of my newer HD footage was shot with a Canon 5S-is digital still camera. I've got nearly a million frames logged in on this camera now. It's quite a workhorse! As cool as this is, I'd still ike something with a little better light sensitivity for night work. I know there are WAY more stars up there - I just can't get them onto the "film" :-)

You have a great talent.

wow, great music. you've done chdk justice in this.
what script did you use for this? sunset4.bas, or ult_intv?
c2thew 3 years ago
You might be surprised that I used the 5S completely stock for all these frames. 15 sec exposure, ISO 800, f2.7, and tripod.
Back when I got my 5S (May '08) the CHDK for the 5S was just a baby (all the effort was going into the 3S ver u
