Mainstream ? Just because Bedlam had melodies that stuck with you a little bit more you call an album mainstream ... Good music is good music ... Who cares if something sounds " mainstream" or not ... let TMV do what they do !!!
I've got a bunch of cool live MARS VOLTA / AT THE DRIVE IN gigs on dvd if anyone's interested...I've been filming & collecting shows for 18yrs and have hundreds listed on my site. Any other tapers/filmers email me with your lists...
i dont know why, but this song reminds me of the kim possible theme song.
its got that secret agent theme vibe, am i right? I feel like i could be jumping outta window with shades getting shot at while this song is blasting.
There's a lot of people that say Amputechture is their favorite Volta album. No offense to anyone, but it has to be my least favorite. From what I've read, I believe it's the band's least favorite as well. I think they referred to it as their step-child or something derogative. We all have our opinions, I was just kinda shocked to see how much people really like Amputechture.
Who cares what they think. They don't care what we think about their music, so why should we? I love Amputechture regardless of what anybody has to say about it.
I know, I was surprised as well. The Bedlam in Goliath easily beats Amputechture. However, my favorite has to be De-Loused in the Comatorium, that's one excellent album right there.
as mars volta fans, which song do you think is the best song they ever wrote? its a tough question and its hard to define but i would say tetragrammaton
i dont understand how you guys think amputechture isnt their best. "day of the baphomets" was incredeible, "viscera eyes"?? and "tetragrammaton"?? omar's 1 minute epic intro solo i jizzed when i first heard it i had to get a new pair of pants to finish the song
the album as a whole carries a theme of disappearance. It's about two of Cedric and Omars friends that went missing and the possibility of seeing them again, it's some heavy shit. That's where you get "Dragging the lake"
Yes, I have listened to the whole album. It's their best just under Amputechture
I still like to watch the Oscars! Hugh J. was great. I did not like last years overpolitical pot shots! Isn't it great that we can love this industry and still have different views! We are lucky! Stepped in What! Am home sick and coughing and accidentally found this channel. Do it!
Lol damn Cedric says that in many of his lyrics. You know what it means? The dragging the lake part. Kuz I've heard him say cutting rivers, and dragging lakes, and splitting water. I just don't know what it means. It's very perplexing.
dragging lakes, as far as I'm aware, is when they search a body of water for something lying on the water's bed (not waterbed... different things) that wouldn't be visible on the surface - like dead bodies, etc.
anyone who thinks Bedlam is their "worst" album is pretty clearly not a musician themselves. I don't understand how you could ever think that the mind blowing avalanche of beats from Pridgen is less interesting than the Tremulant EP,,,
ill agree that songwriting was a little bit of a problem on bedlam but i dont think the drums were the problem. i just think some songs as a whole were not that appealing. they were more of just ok and not something special than being overloaded with drums. but tracks like goliath and agadez really had some nice grooves.
I hope you don't really think it's better to be "interesting" (read: as difficult to play as possible/going out of your way to show off technical abilities etc) than being a well composed piece of music. Though I am not commenting on which is better, just thought you had a bad choice of words
It seems a lot of the newer prog bands and fans like to think this way, which is sad and results such awful shit like Dream Theater. Fortunately there is still the good stuff!
Cedric sounds a little than he did in ATDI at least to me. maybe hes older or something.. anyways just got into ADTI a few weeks ago, been listening to them nonstop. MV is completely nu to me, different but good!
hmm. bedlam was brilliant. just like all there albums, they progress so much each time that even though it still has that general mars volta vibe to it, it could easily be a different band.
they arent afraid of losing fans, as its complete creativity, those who like all there albums truly enjoy a wide spectrum of music.
who can actually say that agadez, goliath, metatron, ourorborous and conjugal burns are bad songs?
Everyone is making all these comparisons with either jon anderson or geddy lee, i think what would be cool is if they covered maybe one song by either band juts cos i think they could and make it sound interesting
I personally thinks he sounds a lot like Geddy Lee from Rush except way way better... no disrespect to Geddy Lee... Cedric is just insane. One of the best ever imo.
this is gonna sound so weird, but it's a mix of the singer from heart and..... and the singer of yes..... a bit of robert plant from led zeplin... but in the end no one. cedric has his own voice.
I find it extremely entertaining that all you pussies are complaining. The truth of the matter is that the Volta are gonna put out another badass album regardless of what you think about it. Why would you nitpick about a brand new album from one of the best bands in the world. LOL @ all of you. I'm just gonna buy the fucking album and enjoy the fuck out of it.
i know its hard kids but try to stop comparing all their albums to each other. ok. this is gonna be different, if you actually let go of deloused, frances, amputecture, and bedlam you can listen to the album and appreciate it. for god sakes just live in it
Robert Carranza, the guy who recorded Bedlam and got Pridgen's awesome drum sound so perfectly recorded my band's Debut Album: "Invisible Mental Tentacles" which will be out later this summer. We are called CITYZEN. Mars Volta fans keep an eye out for it...

hhaaaaaaaaaa. I think the first half of bedlam has annoying choruses. Aberinkula, metatron, goliath, wax. i love them but i mean metatron, come on. "maybe ill break down..."
lol wtf chillout people its just one album and its not like omar has changed his taste in music, listen to his solo albums its crazy shit..lets listen to this album that im shure will b great and wait for the next one to be full of special effects that we all love to listen to while we r high
They said this would be their acoustic album. Maybe their idea of an acoustic album would be like stripping away alot of the special effects and sound tweaks he puts in the song. So rather then all the random weird ambient sounds we'll get a more maybe cohesive sound. This song doesnt sound as expiremental as the others did
Its more mellow. Its a little more of what we consider our acoustic side singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala told Australian radio station Triple J of the new record. We know how people can be so linear in their way of thinking, so when they hear [the new album], theyre going to say, This is not an acoustic album! Theres electricity throughout it! But its our version, the singer said. Thats what our band does — celebrate mutations. Its our version of what we consider an acoustic album.
Omar spells it out for the fans loud and clear in the interview "Never heard a man speak like this man before." They originally said this was going be more of an acoustic album, but he really just composes whats on his head at the time and whatever comes up. TMV is way to creative to be stuck in one state of mind for a whole album.
Hopefully it's more like DeLoused. Maybe Omar has taking some pointers from Rick Rubin like he did with DeLoused. Come on Omar you can still sellout to the public and make amazing songs. Listen to Rick Rubin!!!!
The Deloused album was where the band was at in its early stages. The songs are timeless but they've moved on. If you go to a TMV show, you'll hear the Deloused songs have taken new turns, and are still evolving with continued experimentation. Cedric says they did one show where they played Deloused just as it sounds on cd, and it was the worst they'd ever played, he felt completely empty, for there was no creation or experimentation.
True, I 've seen them live four times and yes the deloused songs always sound better becuase they change them up a bit with improvisation and what not. I'm not one of those people who hate every album but Deloused either by the way. Every album rocks and bedlam started getting more structured which I want to hear and this song is structured so I'm excited for the new one. Have you heard the song Frances the Mute sick ass song! I'm very happy they won a grammy too.
yea but this one comparing to even their most "normal rock" songs sounds really typical, maybe because of lack of saxophone and all that stuff, they just sound so poorly, i dont know i will give it a try.
Mainstream ? Just because Bedlam had melodies that stuck with you a little bit more you call an album mainstream ... Good music is good music ... Who cares if something sounds " mainstream" or not ... let TMV do what they do !!!

I'm very happy they won a grammy too.

i dont like it, sounds like a typical mainstream rock, but "since we ve been wrong" is nice.

Almost on every album mars volta put out has that short mainstream sounding song on them. this is octa's short "normal rock" song
stratocastermaster2 2 years ago
yea but this one comparing to even their most "normal rock" songs sounds really typical, maybe because of lack of saxophone and all that stuff, they just sound so poorly, i dont know i will give it a try.
