hey randy just a quick question about your take on coated heads vs clear heads, right now i have Evans EC2 heads, but i'm considering getting coated heads, whats the difference?? thanks for the tuning tips.
The coating dampens the overtones so its not as ringy as clear heads, but I can hardly hear a difference so i use coated for the looks. But the Evans EC2s are more dampening than just a singleply coated, but a double ply coated is also good for dampening.
i love how ur videos arent painful to watch like aweful expert village and all those ppl talking weird or proper.. makes me sick. Thanks 4 not being one of those ppl =)

he has to put laundry in the bass drum cuz he dont know how to tune it. if you tune the drum correctly you dont have to stuff it. it will have a "tonal" resonance that is pleasant to the ear. the only time I have found that the bass needed stuffing is because of cheap wood shells like "luan" or some unknown junk wood. if it is maple, birch, or walnut you dont have to stuff it if you tune it correctly.
the junk cheapo wood shells need the laundry in them to sound decent cuz you get a "ring" resonance and not a tonal note resonance. why pay good money for expensive drum shells just to kill them with blankets and other dampening devices unless you just dont know how to truly tune a drum.
Yeah if you like a huge booming bass drum sound. I have a small blanket resting against the batter head to give me a thump. It is all preference if you like a boomy kick or not. BTW... these are Maple shells. Not the cheapos. RVP
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
your bass drum sounds like a concrete cinder block. its totally completely dead. the difference in maple dont matter once you kill the resonance that much. my bass is 20" Mapex maple, its empty with a power stroke on beater side and resonance side. I dont have "ringing overtone" I have an awesome resonant tone thats pleasant to the ear. Dom Famularo doesnt put anything in his bass either. Listen to him on youtube. His bass sounds awesome. You do know who Dom Famularo is dont you?
This was really good. I'm thinking maybe in the future I might wanna purchase some mics for my set. Any suggestions as to what I might want to invest in?
I've got an Iron Cobra with a double chain for better glide. Its real good, only thing is that I didn't take care of it too well so some of the screws have come out and they're warped. But if you keep up with just checking out the screws and all that maitenance stuff you should have smooth sailing. Also the beaters on the iron cobra aren't the really heavy ones. They're really light.
when you get your double pedal set up just how you like it, then take out one screw at a time and wipe a very small amount of RTV silicone on the threads ( it dont take much) and then you can forget it. the screws wont back out and wallow out the holes and ruin threads. I did this to my double pedal 6 years ago. havent had a scew fall out yet!
HI Randy! Great lesson as usual but i have a question about your toms? What are your resonant heads becuase i have ec2 coateds also but i have yet to replace my resonnants and i love your toms sound in this video thanks
Hey my parents decided to buy me a new drum set ( I have an Roland TD-12 electric set) I found a good deal on a Yamaha Tour Custom.. I heard good reviews on it but i would like to hear some more opinions... ohh yea and can I get some suggestions on cymbals.. I can probably spend around $350 on a hi hat, crash , and ride but I dont want to buy some crappy cymbal pack.. any suggestions? btw Randy your amazing and nice sounding kit
The amount that your spendng is most likely a bad pack. Look for cymbols that say AA for sabains A or Aduios (I don't think i have the right spelling, but it's something like that or 2002's for Paiste's. These usually have the best tone and are the most durable. But this is my drum teachers, almost every good drummer and my personal opinion. (you can also tell by the prices. More expensive the better).
I know choosing heads comes down to personal opinion, but what do you prefer these days Randy? I'm playing Mapex Saturns and am about to change my heads for the first time. I don't particularly like the sound I'm getting with the Remo clear Emporers...maybe it's just my lack of tuning skills though.
No offense to Van, but the comparison between the Evans EQ pad and just any old blanket or whatever, is night and day! Spend the extra $...it's definitely worth it!
It's all a preference. I pulled it out and I am happier with my old pillow. Every drum is different and everyone likes a different sound. To each his own. Try a free blanket or pillow before spending the money on a fancy one just because it has a logo on it. Heck you may be the only one to see it. RVP
What I do for my buzzing snare is get a small piece of paper fold it in half and place in between my snare wires and the bottom head. This will stop most if not all of the buzz. You might need to try a different number of folds to stop it all.
I found that to ensure an even tension on each and every tension screw, I use a rechargeable electric drill/screwdriver which has an adjustable click ratchet. Start on a low setting and work up to the required tension. This is more dependable than guess-work and quicker also.
I recommend the Mapex Pro M. I have one and a Saturn kit too. Outstanding drums and the Pro M kit sounds just about the same as the Yamaha Kit Van plays. Sweet drums. Keep doing these freebie videos, Van;) The world is a better place cuz ppl like you give to it when you can.

Put a pillow or blanket only in the kick drum. The rest of the toms you can get dead rings for them or Evans makes various ring dampening devices. Check your music store for them. RVP
Nice kit, I have a Yamaha Oak Custom. I do have one question, but nothing to do with tuning. What product works the best to clean stick marks off cymbals? I guess the marks don't make a difference to the sound but I just want them gone for the look, ya know.

What type of snare do you have because that thing sounds beautiful,it has a perfect steel type overtone. Is this under microphones or is it all live? My question is what type of snare is it with what kind of batter and resonant heads?
It's a re-finished Pearl 6.5 x 14 Maple. That is a remo Flam head I think at this time. Remo single ply on the bottom. Standard snares on the bottom. RVP
K I bought my self an EXTREMELY nice Tama Superstar SL drum set. Its an beautiful set but I got like one problem with it. The Suspended toms. (10 and 12 inch) and I cant find the sound I want. ITS PISSING ME OFF SOOOO MUCH!!! I have been experimenting with them for like 2 months now and I still cant figure it out. I got ec2's
Birch. Im sorta searching for like a warm deep sound. Should I try different heads or something? (depth on these things is 6 and 1/2 and than 7 on the 12inch tom.
maybe ur snare is too close to ur toms and the butt of the stick hits the snarehead, if thats the case lower the stand of ur snare and see if you still have that, otherwise try the advice of Randy
Ive been playing for quite a while but one thing i never really bothered too much with was tuning. My bass sounds great, but how do you tune your heads. Tight or loose on top and bottom, and what kind of skins on each side?
dude, ur videos r awsum, ive watchd like all of them and they help so much. but i did exactly this to my drums and now they all sound like timbales. plz help!!
Thanks a lot. Again. Keep up the good work man, your videos are rly helpful dude. Ur like the next Neil Peart. I was also wondering, wat kind of resonant and batter heads do u hav on ur snare?
could you do a video of how to get the toms to sound really good, kinda go indepth about how to reduce the ring, spacifically how to tune PDPs? (shells are Maple, pitch matched)
1. im wearing headphones and i dont hit extremely hard. 2. I dont crack cymbals at all, i said i hear zildjian crack easily. 3. im gona get sabian xs20 because they are quality cymbals that are well priced.
Thanks a lot, this is the most helpful channel on drums and im pretty sure ive seen them all, the advice was great, helped a lot on the bass, your videos are easy to watch, i apreciate the humor in them, keep it up
Go to store and try out all the cymbals. The starter cymbals have gotten way better than what they were when I started playing. Expect to pay a few hundred bucks for a decent sounding cymbals. A set of pro quality cymbals will run you close to 1000USD and more easily. You are looking for cymbal weights at least medium especially in your crashes, a heavy ride and hihats with a heavier than normal top hat for durability - Z Custom hats or Paiste Rude hats are heavy metal staples.
umm hey me again. just wondering what cymbals i should get. i play metal/rock so i want heavier thicker cymbals. i was think zildjian avedis or sabian aax or paiste rude but im not sure yet. Oh and by the way whats drum kit do u have? message me back plz
ah thought it was yamaha stage customs. alright, but what zildjian should i get cause ive heard from a lot of people that they cracl easily and i want to hit hard. plus i think its a big price gap from zbt to A customs or w/e
If you are cracking cymbals easily, you're playing WAY too hard. I'm concerned that you are destroying something far more valuable than your cymbals -your ears! I have a set of ZBTs and they are very durable. I love the bell on my ZBT ride, but I want a darker, more exotic wash so I'm upgrading to a Bosphorus Antique. I also like trashier sounds, the ZBT china is decent but needs more grit.
if you want more grit on your cymbals, (sounds wierd) but put some paper clips around the edges on the side opposite the side you hit. about 3 or 4 should be good, but have them so they are hanging off a little, gives a great metal/thrash sound to any cymbal, and shouldnt hurt the cymbal unless its a super light wheight
hey i was wondering if you could give me your opinion on what new drum set i should get. i have a pearl forum and i play metal/rock so i was wondering what set should i go with?
Wow, that is such a personal thing. I would suggest you get to a music store and play as many kits as possible. It all depends on your budget and sound preference. RVP

@xxkmanxx wen you tune the bottom one around the same as batter you get more ring out the drum
wen you tune it higher you take out some ring and you will get this boing sound cuz of the resonant head vibrating first.
wen you tune it lower you take out some ring and you get a deeper sound.
hope this helps

What type of snare do you have because that thing sounds beautiful,it has a perfect steel type overtone. Is this under microphones or is it all live? My question is what type of snare is it with what kind of batter and resonant heads?
fran2621 3 years ago
oh and what type of snares on the bottom?
fran2621 3 years ago
It's a re-finished Pearl 6.5 x 14 Maple. That is a remo Flam head I think at this time. Remo single ply on the bottom. Standard snares on the bottom. RVP

K I bought my self an EXTREMELY nice Tama Superstar SL drum set. Its an beautiful set but I got like one problem with it. The Suspended toms. (10 and 12 inch) and I cant find the sound I want. ITS PISSING ME OFF SOOOO MUCH!!! I have been experimenting with them for like 2 months now and I still cant figure it out. I got ec2's

What kind of wood are the shells?
RVP
vansdrumming 3 years ago
Birch. Im sorta searching for like a warm deep sound. Should I try different heads or something? (depth on these things is 6 and 1/2 and than 7 on the 12inch tom.
KaydenHurlbert69 3 years ago
Are they the EC2 coated or just EC2? RVP

I heard that the torque key is only good if you have yer lugs are well lubed. Did you have to do that to yer lugs?
kaydawgy 3 years ago
mine are newer so I don't need to but it is a good idea if you have resistance. RVP

Everytime I hit the toms, i hear my snare rattle. How do I get rid of that?
kaydawgy 3 years ago
Tighten the springs of your snare a bit. See if that helps. RVP
vansdrumming 3 years ago
maybe ur snare is too close to ur toms and the butt of the stick hits the snarehead, if thats the case lower the stand of ur snare and see if you still have that, otherwise try the advice of Randy
tecna64 3 years ago
Another kickass educational drum vid Randy! I swear, you're comparable to Danny Carey! Hey what type of snare head is that? I like the ring

I hear you tune your snare REALLy tight; If yo had a tune dial what tension would the batter and resonant be? and whats "RVP"? heh
RWIron 3 years ago
I don't use a dial on the snare. JUst tighten your head until you are happy with it. RVP = Randy Van Patten. My Name.

i really tightened my snare once...and the head broke...half of the head it ripped... was it because it was a factory head?
efrenjh 3 years ago
Ive been playing for quite a while but one thing i never really bothered too much with was tuning. My bass sounds great, but how do you tune your heads. Tight or loose on top and bottom, and what kind of skins on each side?
Kaskut 3 years ago
dude, ur videos r awsum, ive watchd like all of them and they help so much. but i did exactly this to my drums and now they all sound like timbales. plz help!!
owaaaa984 3 years ago
Maybe you went too tight. Bring them back to loose and then slowly tighten them. Go in small steps and listen to them each time. RVp
vansdrumming 3 years ago
Thanks a lot. Again. Keep up the good work man, your videos are rly helpful dude. Ur like the next Neil Peart. I was also wondering, wat kind of resonant and batter heads do u hav on ur snare?

1. im wearing headphones and i dont hit extremely hard. 2. I dont crack cymbals at all, i said i hear zildjian crack easily. 3. im gona get sabian xs20 because they are quality cymbals that are well priced.
krazykoolkid 3 years ago
Thanks a lot, this is the most helpful channel on drums and im pretty sure ive seen them all, the advice was great, helped a lot on the bass, your videos are easy to watch, i apreciate the humor in them, keep it up
Nthay0603 3 years ago
Go to store and try out all the cymbals. The starter cymbals have gotten way better than what they were when I started playing. Expect to pay a few hundred bucks for a decent sounding cymbals. A set of pro quality cymbals will run you close to 1000USD and more easily. You are looking for cymbal weights at least medium especially in your crashes, a heavy ride and hihats with a heavier than normal top hat for durability - Z Custom hats or Paiste Rude hats are heavy metal staples.

Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute! All Zildjian! RVP
vansdrumming 3 years ago
ah thought it was yamaha stage customs. alright, but what zildjian should i get cause ive heard from a lot of people that they cracl easily and i want to hit hard. plus i think its a big price gap from zbt to A customs or w/e
krazykoolkid 3 years ago
You could get the Z custom, they are thicker than the A's
denjazzer 3 years ago
alright cool, im kinda tight on money right now so ill wait a while.
krazykoolkid 3 years ago
If you are cracking cymbals easily, you're playing WAY too hard. I'm concerned that you are destroying something far more valuable than your cymbals -your ears! I have a set of ZBTs and they are very durable. I love the bell on my ZBT ride, but I want a darker, more exotic wash so I'm upgrading to a Bosphorus Antique. I also like trashier sounds, the ZBT china is decent but needs more grit.
jzero000 3 years ago
if you want more grit on your cymbals, (sounds wierd) but put some paper clips around the edges on the side opposite the side you hit. about 3 or 4 should be good, but have them so they are hanging off a little, gives a great metal/thrash sound to any cymbal, and shouldnt hurt the cymbal unless its a super light wheight
mathcore4400 3 years ago
hey man, i need some help on tuning my toms to jaw. can you help me?
rivarbob 4 years ago
hey i was wondering if you could give me your opinion on what new drum set i should get. i have a pearl forum and i play metal/rock so i was wondering what set should i go with?
krazykoolkid 4 years ago
Wow, that is such a personal thing. I would suggest you get to a music store and play as many kits as possible. It all depends on your budget and sound preference. RVP
