Nice video, had a problem my 3s forgotten on my radio, the trick for changing to 2s did not worked, saw your video. Chosed NiMh, set 0.5A, voltage started do increase, at 9v I stopped. Changed to Lipo Balance and it is charging as i type, Cells now at 3.61V. Thank You !
WOW, that'z a first, usually folk'z start off with RC Truck'z n Car'z then onto Plane'z n Heli'z, do u hav any good recommendation'z for a good outdoor Helicopter, dat'z not too expensive ???
@addictedtodat69 The only helis that I fly are the little indoor ones. But you can check the forum at mikeysrc.com. There are alot of heli guys there than can help you.
I'm not trying to sound like a know it all and I like your videos, however eastcoast78 is right. That plastic static bag will just melt and fuel a fire. I'm just trying to help. Happy flying to you my friend.
I think that it is better to be safe than sorry. No need to risk a fire, better to be safe than sorry."do this at you own risk...." better to buy new ones... Just look at battery fires aftermath.
@Kpilot786457 That's only true if the battery cells are damaged and the LIPO itself shows puffing. Puffing/damaged cell = replace LIPO.
This procedure should only be done on a LIPO that is not damaged and has gone below its minimum voltage due to being plugged in too long. I have recovered a few LIPOS this way with no issues.
LIPO fires occur because there are people that insist on using puffy or damaged cell lipos and/or are careless. Safety 1st!! Even a new LIPO can catch on fire.
Jose awesome video buddy thanks for bringing this technique to our attention. One question for you, I know you made reference to safety and do at your own risk etc over and over. Have you ever had a Lipo blow up doing this or are you just being cautious for the viewer? Thanks again!
@RCWinnipeg I had to mention that in the video because there are folks that will do this incorrectly and/or will run into into problems and I am not liable. I have never had a lipo blow up on me. It's always best to play it safe and use a lipo bag and be cautious. You never know what will happen.
Pb = Lead acid battery...symbol Pb (from Latin: plumbum) perodic table ..High school chemistry stuff
NiCd = nickel–cadmium.
As for being critical about stopping the charge in NiMh mode just after it reaches 6 volt ( for your 2 cell pack) ..not necessary. The difference in the charge modes (Nimh/LiPo etc) only comes in to play at end of charge.
So taking the pack up to 6.5 or 7 then switching to LiPo mode would do no harm
Nice to see someone showing how to do it..I have saved this link to show others. I have been doing this for a long time now
A few comments.
For a start charge I would go with a lower charge current in NiMh mode..the lower the better, the lower the battery is to start with the lower the current should be . I recovered cells from below 1 volt per cell, but before the charger, I used a very small charge current (0.01A) from a Digital Voltmeter in Continuity mode.It puts out 2v so can be used
This might be a stupid question, but... Is this method safe on slightly puffy hardcase lipos? I traded something for these off craigslist, and didn't notice they were puffed till 3 days later... Of course the guy won't trade back... :/
@raysaboy Since I can't see the battery myself I would say no but if you did, make sure you do it outside and put the lipo in a lipo charging bag, concrete block or other enclosure that would contain an explosion/fire if it occured. Think safety first!
I would suggest another thing: The lower the starting voltage, the slower the "boot" charge current should be. Don't know of exact numbers, but I would charge at the lowest possible setting (100ma on my charger) until it goes over 3.0 per cell. This minimizes the chance of electroplating inside the battery (which could make it puffy later on) and will probably recover it to a better condition. Don't rely on anything but fiberglass, sand or concrete as a flame barrier. Too hot a flame for plastic
I surely will try this i have 2 e-flight packs with very low voltage my tritoneq charger will not pick them up. I will report back and let you know if any progress thank you for your time and info.
@rcjoseb So far this method did work for a 1800mah 11.1v batt which was reading 3.6 volts total when i started. It charged to 4.20v per cell ended up taking 1850mah and was 12.46v charged. Mine also took a couple hours. Thanks
Thanks rcjoseb, I used your method on a 3 cell 1800 Lipo. Just used 2amps and I went for 4.0 volts, to 5, then checked with Lipo charge, no go. I checked at each amp, when I got to 8.56 I checked again... WOO HOO!!! IT LIVES AGAIN!!! DARN.. now it's raining, Oh well, charges all my packs ready for a clear day now.. Thanks, jc
I would NEVER EVER use a PC Static bag like that to charge with for serveral reasion. 1) they BURN 2) THEY CONDUCT ELECTRICITY!!! This method works great but use a real lipo bag.. Those bags BURN and release toxic chemicals.. As a function of their anti-static design they conduct electricity, altho with high resistance. I wouldnt take the chance.. espacially if your using a charging adapter as he does in this video.
I killed a battery the other day because I forgot to unplug it, and I revived it with this same method but I was quite liberal with the NiMH charge....
