Whatever you say about the film, it is certainly not shallow. It's a tale of greed and ambition corroding men over time. That you think Daniel's actions were "for no good reason" doesn't speak to the sophistication of the film. The film was inspired by the first part of the book "Oil!" but was not based on it, so that is not a fair comparison. If the film had been true to Upton Sinclair's socialist commentary few people would have watched it.

In the film the equation you make is exactly it - greed & ambition corroding men over time. Compare that to Sinclair's novel, where the oilman is a perfectly nice guy forced into immoral acts by the necessities of being a capitalist. The film takes on the easy stereotype of 'the evil oil man,' 'the evil preacher.' No statement is made on politics, religion, oil

Those subjects are completely beyond PTA, who chooses instead to simply work with caricatures. The murders are completely unbelievable and Dano's performance is pretty predictable & unimaginative, IMO. I found it to be a very cartoonish film.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but it sounds like you want the film to take the next step into some type of "capitalism is evil and religion is the opiate of the masses" message, which is beyond where most producers and viewers want to go and usually overwhelms the artistic qualities of the film b/c everyone is debating the film's message. I for one thought there was a lot of development in Daniel's character as he slowly moved from protagonist to man overwhelmed by greed.
