i hated briony in the book and the film until the very end when she's an old woman in the interview and you can see by the look in her eyes that she truly never forgave herself, then i felt bad for her ):
I was looking for the bee scene where Briony saw what happened at the fountain for a project, but I came upon this video. You did an awesome job. Did you have a mixer? Because I love how the rapid typewriting clacking comes into the Apologize song. That is the perfect song for this. It makes me very emotional. This movie was so beautiful with its characterization of Briony.
Briony didn't hate Ce, she hated what Robbie wrote in the letter. She was confused by what she thought were attacks on Ce at the fountain, and, in the library..But silly Robbie enveloped the wrong letter...So it was Robbie who also had a part to play in ruining three lives !!
The whole thing just went so fast. The first time I watch this. I literally felt like being grabbed on the collar and stuffed in a rollercoaster seat, and went on that unbelievable emotional journey.
Everything. Everyone. Has part in the catastrophe.
Even Cee, has part in it.
Would Robbie send any apology letter if there wasn't any fountain incident at all?
It was Cee's decision to go out there and ask for Robbie's Bolshevik rolls and start pissin him off... all the way to the fountain. xD
There is more depth to it than her simply being a foolish 13-year-old. She did misunderstand some parts of what she saw, and I don't think she can be blamed for that. But there is a part of her -this comes of much better in the book- who understood that what she did was wrong, and she was acting out of jealousy, because she fancied Robbie.
@BANANASHROOGLE i agree completely :) she did it because in some way i think she understood what was happening between robbie & cee, i think it was jealously that made her accuse rob. i just dont think she realized the effect it would cause, really. i loved the book, it explains everyones views and feelings, thats why it was so easy to understand the movie better, i had to explain alot of the scenes to my sister cos she didnt get some of what was happen.
How can you feel bad for Briony? She was foolish and sent an innocent man to jail because she hated Ce and wanted her to be miserable. She knew that Ce loved Robbie and Robbie would get into trouble, but she never cared because she wouldn't have done it otherwise. Being 13 is no excuse. She knew it was wrong but did it because she's stupid.
She is the villain of the story. She ruined Ce and Robbie.
One thing that puzzles me: why do they believe someone stupid like her and arrest Robbie?
@orlandogirl213 I disagree with your statement. Briony was not the villian. Actually, she happens to be my favorite character in atonement altogether. The reason? Cee, aside from being a nurse and doing some good in the world by that means and falling in love with Robbie, did nothing but smoke and say "come back". Robbie was okay, but he shouldn't have written that letter in the first place. Yes, what Briony did was wrong, but it wasn't because she hated Cee; she thought she was protecting her.
@melephant30 I know! Its very sad that Briony is 77 at the end and is STILL unable to forgive herself for something she did when she was 13. i mean, can you imagine living all those years with the guilt that poor girl must have suffered with? That alone must have been punishment enough for any true wrong she did, I think. For some reason, I found the book ending even sadder because she can't publish her "Atonement" novel until Lola and Paul Marishall die and it seems like they will out-live her.
Perfect Song for Briony!

Robbie wrote the letter to say he was sorry for being immature and that he really liked her, it wasn't for the fountain.

Thank you Orlando Girl for commenting.
Like I said in the info.
Briony has a place of her own soundtrack.
Yes, I disagrees her choice to ruin everything.
She kinda let herself believe things that she could do otherwise.
I didn't pick Apologize for no reason.
It's sort of what Rob and Cee would say to her, rite?
Thank you again.
:D

This is so good! I really do feel kinda bad that Briony is being blamed for something she did when she was thirteen. Great movie though!
