This is one of the best examples of how Minnesota usually played Penn State close during the Glen Mason years. It is amazing what Glen did, considering he wasn't a great recruiter and got a lot of 1* players.
Minnesota was blasted almost as bad as Central Michigan was that year. Although the goal line stand at Indiana in 2004 was what righted the ship, to truly close the book on the dark years, this game was needed. I'd say just about every demon is exorcised now (Minnesota in 2005, Iowa in 2007, Michigan in 2008, road game at Ohio State in 2008). I have a good feeling about 2009. It won't be another 2006 type of year. We should go AT LEAST 11-1.
I agree, although, Illinois could be a shocker.... If I'm not wrong Juice is coming back, but u never know with him,,, he's very inconsistent. Ohio State will obviously will be the biggest games during the regular season. We should take care of business at home, and we'll see with Mich St. They have a lot that they lost like we have.... Lastly Michigan will be interesting to see, how much they have improved. I think we will have a very good year! I am already ready for the season to kick off!
For some reason I think Illinois will fall off the map, but Ohio State won't be our toughest game (especially in Beaver Stadium), Michigan State and Michigan scare me. Other than 2005, Michigan State's always been tough at home, especially in 2007 when they were just getting wiped but came back to win. Northwestern also worries me a bit on the road. Minnesota almost always plays us tough but I think we'll win (even in 1997 when we were the Big Ten #2 and they finished with 3 wins).
The only reason that I was concerned about Illinois was that inconsistency :P However it turned out either in a good way or a bad way. I would disagree, even though it is in Beaver, Ohio State is still the power house of Big Ten (even though I hate to admit) There offense will end up one dimensional mostly passing, since our front 7 would be very dominant. But the secondary would need to step up. The spring game didn't look to bad for us, but I am interested to see them play in an actual game.
Everyone says Pryor's passing got better, but I think it evens out with the lack of good WRs he has to rely on. Unless 2010 is a breakout year for these guys, I think 2009 might be the end of the Ohio State run (kind of like how 2005 was the last year of the Iowa run). I don't forsee them collapsing, but I do think Ohio State's going to go 8-4 this coming year. I think the biggest worry game at home is Iowa. Other than our 2007 blowout win, we haven't dominated Iowa much lately.
Yeah, I could see that. That would be interesting. The reason I'm worried about Pryors passing is not because that he's a super passer, but our secondary. Although we saw some good stuff at the B&W game, but there were a lot of gaps to fill in. I don't think Iowa will be a major concern, I hope it isn't..... Iowa lost nearly all of their key players. So we shall see. Plus it's a white out game :)
Minny would be a good one, but once again it's a homecoming game too.
I think what will help us is that we won't have to focus on clogging up running lanes like when they had Beanie. Since it's late in the year, the secondary should be pretty experienced by then, on the other hand, one injury could spell disaster.
Anytime I think of Minnesota at Penn State, I think of three games. The 16-15 win in 1997 that actually started the downward spiral of the team, the 1999 "Dan Nystrum for the win" game that started the decline, and the 44-14 thumping in 2005.
Eh, well, we know they'll run on us even though there is no Beanie. Their RB's looked pretty good. I don't think secondaries get a drastic change as much as O-lines do.... the good thing is that their WR corps is pretty new too. I don't think experience would be the issue. More of the athletic ability. But maybe I'm wrong.
Yeah, I get your point :) I'm hoping it won't happen. Plus our homecoming record is absurd :D
Big Ten backs always seem to be pretty good. Even Michigan, as miserable as they were last year, had a great running back in Brandon Minor who ran all over PSU in the first quarter before adjustments were made. I think they'll run on us definately, but they won't run wild like in 2007 (I still don't know how we were still in that game until Morelli threw that pick halfway through the 4th, Ohio State had the ball for what seemed like another hour).
And yes, both teams from Michigan would be interesting. It would be interesting how Michigan developed. Mich St. has lost a lot of their offense, so we shall see. Northwestern could be scary. I'm expecting our D to dominate though. Minnesota once again could be interesting but being at home, so I think, and I hope it would be fine =) Personally I think Minnesota offensive scheme has taken a drastic change of style, passing more so than running, which is good for a crowd at Beaver! Can't wait
The reason I mentioned Minnesota is because it seemed that no matter the records, Minnesota has always been a thorn in Penn State's side (except for 1994 and 2005, of course). Northwestern will probably give a game a little like the last time the two played at Evanston, close but PSU ending up with the win.
BTW, any predictions for the Penn State vs Akron game? I think PSU wins 41-10 in what should be a great tuneup game. Unfortunately, the other three OOC games are also cupcakes.
Akron should be a good tuneup game. Although I dare not to predict since I don't know much about Akron's team, but I think we'll win by a fair margin. Interesting year, hopefully another good one :) But I hope the we could do better than what we did in the previous years post season. Ah.... the secondary, once again is the biggest concern. But then again, when we have concerns, they tend to show pleasant surprises, so I'm hoping for that.
i was at that game in the nose bleeds i heard that hit like i was on the sidelines it was rediculous

Yeah he was the hardest hitter minnesota had, but michael robinson rocked him! He was one big quarterback

Why is that embarrassing? MRob is a tough QB, now playing as a RB in the NFL, that hit ended the saftey's career, it's tragic not embarrassing.

dude i was saying that getting hit by a qb is embarrassing
even if he is a sick qb it is sad to get abused by a qb regardless
