I use UV just because it saves me wiping and scratching my lens vs a piece of glass on the Filter, however the issue iv noticed with them is they cause unwanted holograms on photos in underground car parks or under certain lighting which i think is because the glass on the filter is flat where as the rest of the lens has curved surfaces ?
hey nice review esp hitting the filter with that hard metal stuff. I find the lens filter to be effective in preventing accidental finger print smudges on the front element
Also if possible post a vide on how to clean a camera lens. Does cleaning a lens has a potential to scrape off special coating on the front element?
@LEONJERSEY For a Canon lens I might well have paid dollars, however in this case I paid sterling. But YouTube Insight shows that UK viewers are actually in the minority on my channel - US dollars is the currency with the most per capita relevancy to my subscribers.
I don't understand what your objection is or why you'd call someone "false" just because you didn't care for a choice of currency in a joke video. That's really not average.
@LEONJERSEY Perhaps if you were a little more educated, you just might be less of a tool. I'm an American and I have no trouble using pounds, yen, or dollars depending on audience and topic.
@kenandkids TOOL, you have missed the point, I can calculate ANY currency into ANY numeric value TOOL. And talking off educated....... Dont make me, make you look like a TOOL.......TOOL
Filter: I personally like using a B+W UV IR CUT 486 MRC DIGITAL filter on my 24-105 F4 L IS USM. I put it on, the UV and IR are cut at the same time (punching out the blues and greens a bit more without a Circular Polarizer), and I don't have to worry about damage to the front element as much (which as a University Student, keeps me happy). At the same time, some filter antagonists are such because as pros they can make back the cost of an L lens in a shoot, thus making UV filters unneeded.
I'd say your primary use is important as well.. Personally i keep cheap front filters on my lenses, but I use my camera mainly for press like work, and thus i never walk around with lens caps. The risk of scratching the front is thus huge, and thats why i use filters. In the studio i'd some times take it off.
@dangerouslytalented True, although a scratch in a front element is not the end of the world. A gouge or graze to a special coating however could have quite an effect on your images.
DmKrispin, most people have 2, so you might want to check again. Mine have very poor focus quality, and have been getting worse over the years, so these days the protective UV filters I get from lenscrafters are actually lenses to correct my front lens element defects.

If you drop a camera with a UV filter on the front, the shards could scratch the lens...
