If you want to know more about You can visit the websites of the organizations that carry on this tradition and perhaps make a quick trip to Mamoiada and also visit the Museum of Mediterranean masks
On the meaning and origin of this ritual there are several hypotheses, the most widely accepted is that it is a reproduction of the expulsion of the arabian invaders (played by mamuthones with anthropomorphic masks and black skin) by the natives (played by Issohadores dressed in red).
I apologize for my bad English and I'm not sure I understood the meaning of your post. However if you are interested and learn more about mamuthones and Issohadores from Mamoiada I inform you that they begin to perform from 17 January, the day of St. Anthony and the opening day of the carnival, and conclude just the "martedi Grasso", the last day of carnival .
i'm 48 years old and only hearing of this for the first time, via a tv documentary about Italy. Nowhere do i see any indication of what time of year this event occurs, but what REALLY interests me is that this event is SO impactful, yet after 200 years of it's tradition, no one seems to know WHAT it's about. They just do it. Wild.
