I bought a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive studio edition in May then last week it stop working. I could hear the drive spinning but it didn't start up. So I placed it in the freezer for a few hours then plugged it in and it WORK!
WD is going to send me a replacement so I moved all my data from the drive.
@AlecTeal Also, if you buy a 1TB hard drive, it's not 1024 GB, it's only 1000 and terrabyte would be the wrong name, but everyones used to it, but for manufacturers working with 1000 is alot easier ^^
@Insanity0107 no its 1024gb raw space; do you think first off it could be sold if it lied about that, second off why would you manufacture 1000gb 1024 gb (anything ^2) is actually a convienant number to fit on a disk.
its often rounded to 1000, get your shit together please
when ever i buy a new hard drive run it to death for the first 2 or 3 weeks and if it still runs its good if it doesn't send it back for a replacement.
dell xps gen 2 still has its 74 gig 10,000 rpm drive (4 years old)
the 250 gig died after 3 1/2 years (up in smoke lol and very scary) replaced with a 500 gig about a year ago
and two other 500 gigs one a year old and the other about 2 months old both still quit and strong
500 gig for a system split up in to a 100 gig for the os and programs and the 380 or what ever left over for the mydocs folder so when you reinstall windows you dont have to back any thing up just reinstall all your docs are on the other part
500 in a nas for back up of photos videos and over 50 gigs of mp3's docs and programs i have made for school (visual basic) and able to access at school via the internet or any where else in the world. i can pull up any pic that is at home play mp3s and also save stuff from school on it so no need to cary a flash drive even. as long as i can get on the net i have a 500 gig hard drive i can put any thing i want on
So you're gonna keep 1TB of keyboard drivers and Linux Distros? Suuuure. We all know you wanna keep your nice, big, pirated software collection safe and sound in there.
I don't think so. This thing would take forever to degrade. Ink Cartridges take about 400 years before they degrade so imagine how long this will take to break down. I'd say about 4,000 years, but that's just an estimate. Remember, this thing is made from thick heavy metals and special materials. Hard drives = not environment friendly.
I'm not talking about the ink inside. I'm talking about the entire cartridge itself. If someone throws an ink cartridge away it's obviously going to be empty and it's container and circuitry inside will take many centuries to start decomposing. So if a CONTAINER WITH MICROCHIPS INSIDE TAKES 400 YEARS THINK HOW LONG A METAL CONTAINER WITH METAL INSIDE WILL TAKE TO DECOMPOSE.
if people recycle the ink like there suppose to they grind it up and take the metal and melt it down same with old computers the mother board's have something like 5% rare earth metal in them
and not b/c there tossing them does it mean its empty we have a higher end office hp ink jet that if the ink has been sitting around to long it wont use it
My 500gb drive next to it is very reliable and quiet, I've had it for over a year. The 1tb just went out on me 2 days ago :( Luckily there is a three year warranty.
I thought about the TB drive, but for $105, I couldn't pass up the 500GB. I was wondering if the 500GB version had the RAID option to mirror half of itself.
P.S. - I'm the same one who posted the other comment about the $105.
no 1 needs this much space i have 4computers and 1 of them runs on a 80 gig hard drive and i do every thing the porb is ppl dont take there shit off there computers
I would not say that "no 1" needs this much space. A lot of people who do video editing, sound editing or work with large amounts of media would love this drive or similar ones.
Noise issue has become a non-issue for me, thank God. I got some really good advice from Amazon and newegg customer reviews, about flipping the internal fan around. I even went further and took out the 'drive cage cover', so air will passes through both sides of the enclosure. This mod without voiding your warranty will work with all second edition drives: My Book Pro Edition II, My Book Premium Edition II or My Book World Edition II.
There ok, Mine lasted about 13 months before it died....

Computers use base 2 to calculate a Gb, people use base 10.
So, people think 1000kb = 1mb, when your pc thinks 1024kb = 1mb..
ChIkEnAtEmYdOnUtS 3 years ago 3
therefore the gb should actually read higher! the guy before u was right.
amistrymister 3 years ago
dude I know! It always happens. It wouldn't sound right if it was like this:
"My Book 466GB"
Just like if you have a 80GB PS3. It only has 74GB.
ShiNoNuma 2 years ago
@lestweforget9210 due to the file system you loose 69gb in block allocation, google/wiki ntfs

@AlecTeal HAHA you're wrong. It's 1000 GB is base 10. Since each GB in base 2 is 1024 MB you can only fit 931 base 2 GB's in 1000 base 10 GB's.
