As a rule I detest Mick hucknall as he's a big ginger twat but this tune is undeniably orsome, a groove that any funk/soulster from the golden age in the mid seventies would be proud of; a real guilty pleasure but a pleasure all the same.
I sometimes wonder if I love the 80's so much because 80's were great, or whether I love the 80's so much because the open road of life still lay before me. The journey of life was still young and fresh. The anticipation of adventures to come still excited my dreams. Decades seem to have slipped by in a moment. I wonder if the 80's were so great in my memories because hope and dreams breathed in my soul then.
Jesus Christ. I am on a Simply Red kick, having heard "Stars" recently and then went and researched some other songs..they were so great! This song is AWESOME. God, I miss the 80s.
I think the lines "I went to my brother to see what he could do...but i'm unable to" refers to Sam Cooke's song `A change is gonna come` when he sing 'Then i go to my brother and i say "brother can you help me?..."
He sings that he doesn't qualify for a pension. This isn't strictly true as he would have paid national insurance contributions on his earnings. Mick can apply in writing to the DSS for full details of these contibutions, hope this helps Mick
It's funny, at one point in time starting off without wealth meant you had to display even more talent than those who had wealth and privilege. It seems today we celebrate attitude over aptitude and make celebrities out of the kitschy and unimportant. It's hard to think of new artists today whose musical contributions will be revered in 20 years.
Just consider how the big names of 5 or 10 years ago are already being forgotten.
This song was written & released in the day's of the Thatcher government which were pretty grim for the average person. Then Labour had decades to get it right & did't. Now we have the coalition,.......don't hold your breath - O for the life of the landed gentry or the banker!
friggin great song for any era!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my parents struggled their parents struggled my sister and i struggle history repeats itself!!!!!!! everyone i know is struggling and yes i'm a democrat haha
friggin great song for any era!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my parents struggled their parents struggled my sister and i struggle history repeats itself!!!!!!! everyone i know is struggling and yes i'm a democrat haha
One of the quirkiest bands from The 80's; Of their tunes, THIS ONE was more worthy to be a number one single in The USA, NOT "Holding Back The Years". I truly believe that.
@kja427 I couldn't agree with you more. I must've heard "Holding Back The Years" or "If You Don't Know Me By Now" a million times on the radio back during the 80's/90's. Both great songs but they were way overplayed & gave American listeners the impression that Simply Red only did ballads. I never ever recall hearing this terrific song or others like "A New Flame" on the radio. It was only after I bought their G/H album a few yrs ago that I found out how many upbeat songs this band had.
@vodude It's also probably the reason Simply Red hasn't toured the US since "Stars". They really aren't appreciated here as much as they/he deserves to be.
@kja427 I never thought of this band as ' quirky '! They were extremely popular in the 80's here in the UK . Shame that the US didnt get to hear all of their music back then but hopefully you can now due to the wonder of Youtube ! I love their stuff ( though Mick Hucknall didnt do a lot for me at the time , yes I'm female ! ) . I've looked at your profile & you seem to like listening to the same kind of music that I do so you obviously have extremely good taste ................. !!
I wish the I was still in the financial position today as I was when this song came out- I NEVER thought in a million years that MY BELOVED COUNTRY, AMERICA would have the financial trouble we are having today! We have a MAJOR problem with corporate greed, sky high fuel costs, over-taxation, and our society is trying to keep up with the information age- these computers we use, and gangs and crack cocaine/ meth/ is a cancer to all of us!! I hope and pray that MY offspring can overcome this.
Not much has changed Socialism for the rich and Capitalism for the rest of us who are always made to pay for their greed and incompetence. Not much has changed since the 80s folks, it has just become more obvious.
As someone who feels lucky to have come of age during the Reagan-era and who is now active in the Tea Party I disagree very much with the politics of this song but I still love the musical artistry of it.
Mick Hucknall must have the sexiest voice in music.
@annoyinglittletwerp this song tries to expose the fact that reaganomics didn't help all americans. in fact, it hurt many of them. i think it's safe to say mick didn't have you in mind when he put pen to paper on this one.
