Actually, Puff The Magic Dragon is about how children grow up and LOSE their imagination. I think that's the real reason why so many people insist that it's about drugs. They do that because the real story is too heartbreaking for them to cope with. So they concoct some absurd hidden meaning just so they won't have to think about poor Puff sitting in his cave, weeping over his lost friend.
Actually, when you think about it, this IS sort of a drug song. And what drug is it about?
