Hey, i want to get a router for gameplay, what router do you recommend? Also my internet provider is cox and i wanted to know is it comatable with any router?
I've been using this router since 2008. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ROUTER AS 8011.n doest NOT WORK. I have many PC's and iDevices in the house AND NEVER ONCE has the 8011.n worked on any device! ALSO there have NEVER been any updates to the firmware in all the years I've had it. If I could, I would have returned my router when I had the chance. It's just a plain old 8011.g speed router.

Belkin make and provide service for all sorts of electronic items, all of it sub-standard. Their infamous g series router caused me alot of problems for the 30 hours that it lasted and the broken English Indian tech support is as equally usless as the entire product range.
Personally, I wouldn't even use the god damn ethernet cable from this package.
Mac address filtering alone is not secure. You can easily intercept packets and extract the mac address then dummy the mac address to your computer thus granting you entry.
Great info, just use MAC not encryption, so I can sent a packet to a connected laptop and then spoof the MAC and get into your network...great advice....not use encryption!

lilmayo16 knows that. He's saying that MAC filtering is effectively NO SECURITY AT ALL. All of your MAC addresses are broadcast in-the-clear, so anyone could simply spoof one of the MAC IDs to get on.
Even worse, I found that you don't have to spoof the MAC. MAC filtering only disabled DHCP for MACs that aren't recognized. YOU CAN STILL GET ON BY SIMPLY ENTERING MANUAL IP SETTINGS! (at least, this is how it works for routers that I've tested)
Incorrect. If you use MAC filtering without encryption as the guy suggests, there is no way to hide your MAC addresses. There is no way software / firmware programming can stop you from spoofing a MAC ID.

This on is good i bought the Uk model of this f5d8232 uk4... may be you do know how to configure it correctly.. mine can reach the 300mps and some times it drops to 270. the only reason of dropping speed due to interference not the router,,, because it only runs at 2.4 ghz... lots of appliances uses that bandwidth special the wireless telephone... if you want to run it smoothly put it away to the appliances and put it in the high places..
Peace of crap you need to turn of the QoS setting in "Wireless > Channel and SSID" to fix this thing, looks like the Belkin firmware cannot implement QoS effectively.
This router sucks! A lot of people are having problems with these including me.. At first it dropped connection every two hours, the solution was to flash the device to firmware 1.0.0.16(beta), worked ok for a time.. but now the router won't boot up, the progress bar stops at 10-20% and resets itself... I've tried to reset the router, hold the reset button for 10, 20,30 secs, holding it while turning the router on but nothing helps..

Had mine for over a year with no problems and the fastest most reliable speeds to date...of course I pay over a hundred a month for internet. It is true (to a certain extent) that WPA and WEP slows down the wifi speed BUT IT IS SECURE.
WPA is anyway - WEP is so so easy to crack.
It is very easy to alter the mac filtering system remotely to allow the hackers mac address onto the network. Once they are on, they can cause all sorts of problems that could easily have been avoided.
Encrypt with WPA using a random sequence of letters and numbers for best results.
They suck don't they? mine looses connection all the time when I'm playing ps3 online and when I'm on msn not all my messages that people r sending me come through.
So it's like I'm ignoring them when it hasn't come through

Oh yes, you forgot to tell everyone that this router ships with a free 2 hour disconecting bug when playing online games! And even if you download the pre-release patch, it will render the router incompatible with your wireless xbox! Value for money? certainly not.
No its still allows you to play games for a full 2 hours but then connection drops and reconnects but will kick you from your online game, if you need a temp fix message me.

I cracked open my N1 Vision last night after 6 months of WIFI Hell to discover the prats didn't put a heat-sync on the WIFI card . I chopped off the GPU heat-sync from my old laptop and stuck it to the card wih some thermal paste .
From >1MB/s from 9MB/s and no wifi crashes
If you have a n1 vision with the same symptoms (Bad wifi performance / WIFI crashing but not the router or Internet/Ethernet connections) id suggest you do the same thing .

Must say I am a bit disappointed with my new N1 Vision.
Then I tried a N1, this keeps dropping the ADSL connection,I plugged my 4 year old Netgear wireless ADSL router and this worked as it has done for the past few years,the only impvovement I noticed whilst the N1 was working was a slightly better signal,but it was sited by the front door and the thing would "Stall" as we walked past the N1!
I didnt do alot of research because I needed a router fast but I have heard that D-link are the best. There were none of them in the shop when I fired back that belkin but I went for netgear rangemax. Serious improvement over the belkin anyway and the ping problem disappeared.
Hi everyone the same thing happen to me with my PS3, but not now. Go to network setting on PS3 then Internet connection settings go Automatic till the page with DHCP host name, There you see set or do not set, choose set then the next display will ask you for a host name, I type in PS3, go though rest of setting then save setting, now the display on my router shows PS3, hope it help you and let me know if not.
Right now I have a belkin wireless router and there are a couple of problems with it. Sometime it will show me that the port is good (the one that I'm hooked up to), but I cant connect at all to the internet. This router is a joke. Got one last week and today I wanted to kick it all the way back down the road back to pc world where i bought the thing. Really bad pings, really inconsistent data transfer, cheaply made, way way too expensive. Tried everything to make it work. Avoid this product at all costs if you want high performance for online gaming or for anything else!!! I also think that anyone saying that this is a good router is some bullshitter working for belkin!!!
Each Network card has a unique MAC. It would be a clever trick to find this mac and then simulate it but I'm all ears. You say anyone can do this, I can't...and I'm fairly competent with a computer. But, as I say, do tell me more and I will use that bandwidth hogging Encryption in future
I do not want to say how it is done, but in simple terms there is a program that obtains the MAC addresses of the clients on the network (the hard part), then there is another program that you just type the MAC address you want and it tells windows to assume thats the one.

yeah , i tried the pre-release firmware. It updates 50% and then error, won't finish. I think it's only for UK & AU users? And I went into the console of the router, and killed the interval that disconnects every 2 hours. still,, same problem. I've packed it and hooked up my old linksys wrt150n , voila.. no more headaches. LD
I've contacted belkin.. they gave me a new link for firmware.. it still disconnects while i'm gaming.. but other than that.. surfing & working online, no problems.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT listen to that idiot talking about mac filtering.
It is true (to a certain extent) that WPA and WEP slows down the wifi speed BUT IT IS SECURE.
WPA is anyway - WEP is so so easy to crack.
It is very easy to alter the mac filtering system remotely to allow the hackers mac address onto the network. Once they are on, they can cause all sorts of problems that could easily have been avoided.
Encrypt with WPA using a random sequence of letters and numbers for best results.

yes the n1 vision IS shit... mine bricked then all it did was restart in a constant loop until the screen died... waste of $150 for me... and best of all belkin wont let me return mine and get a new one... and target (place i got it from refuses to do the same)

I have this router and it works fine with my windows vista computer, xp laptop, vista laptop, and my friends osx laptop, xbox360 and ps3. This is a solid router.

No its still allows you to play games for a full 2 hours but then connection drops and reconnects but will kick you from your online game, if you need a temp fix message me.

I cracked open my N1 Vision last night after 6 months of WIFI Hell to discover the prats didn't put a heat-sync on the WIFI card . I chopped off the GPU heat-sync from my old laptop and stuck it to the card wih some thermal paste .
From >1MB/s from 9MB/s and no wifi crashes
If you have a n1 vision with the same symptoms (Bad wifi performance / WIFI crashing but not the router or Internet/Ethernet connections) id suggest you do the same thing .

Must say I am a bit disappointed with my new N1 Vision.
Then I tried a N1, this keeps dropping the ADSL connection,I plugged my 4 year old Netgear wireless ADSL router and this worked as it has done for the past few years,the only impvovement I noticed whilst the N1 was working was a slightly better signal,but it was sited by the front door and the thing would "Stall" as we walked past the N1!

I didnt do alot of research because I needed a router fast but I have heard that D-link are the best. There were none of them in the shop when I fired back that belkin but I went for netgear rangemax. Serious improvement over the belkin anyway and the ping problem disappeared.

Hi everyone the same thing happen to me with my PS3, but not now. Go to network setting on PS3 then Internet connection settings go Automatic till the page with DHCP host name, There you see set or do not set, choose set then the next display will ask you for a host name, I type in PS3, go though rest of setting then save setting, now the display on my router shows PS3, hope it help you and let me know if not.

Right now I have a belkin wireless router and there are a couple of problems with it. Sometime it will show me that the port is good (the one that I'm hooked up to), but I cant connect at all to the internet. Is there something I should do or can someone reccomend another router for me (preferably under $100 CDN)

This router is a joke. Got one last week and today I wanted to kick it all the way back down the road back to pc world where i bought the thing. Really bad pings, really inconsistent data transfer, cheaply made, way way too expensive. Tried everything to make it work. Avoid this product at all costs if you want high performance for online gaming or for anything else!!! I also think that anyone saying that this is a good router is some bullshitter working for belkin!!!

MAC address filtering is ineffective, anyone can use a program to simulate a valid MAC and access the network. You should always use encryption.

Each Network card has a unique MAC. It would be a clever trick to find this mac and then simulate it but I'm all ears. You say anyone can do this, I can't...and I'm fairly competent with a computer. But, as I say, do tell me more and I will use that bandwidth hogging Encryption in future

I do not want to say how it is done, but in simple terms there is a program that obtains the MAC addresses of the clients on the network (the hard part), then there is another program that you just type the MAC address you want and it tells windows to assume thats the one.

parpi83 is correct you know... MAC address filtering isn't secure if someone actually wants to get in to your network.
MAC addresses can be spoofed easily.

yeah , i tried the pre-release firmware. It updates 50% and then error, won't finish. I think it's only for UK & AU users? And I went into the console of the router, and killed the interval that disconnects every 2 hours. still,, same problem. I've packed it and hooked up my old linksys wrt150n , voila.. no more headaches. LD
