Microbes are already at work. The bugs have already been let loose. This is why the area is becoming oxygen depleted. They need the oxygen to digest the hydrocarbons.

@dethwryder no problem (if it really is the microbes that are depleting the O2) the ocean will reoxygenate a lot faster then it will ridding itself of the oil and if the ocean is being depleted, the the shrimp would actutally die as well. so i submit that the idea that microbes are depleting the waters of O2 is either a lie or it is due to the oil and gases. i think that the fish are dieing due to toxic gases saturating the water, refer back to your biochemistry, organic chemistry class. I could be mistaken but i think when there were oil spills here in trinidad the local authorities used microbes to clean the oil. If here they can do this I see no problem with the effects of the spill being reduced with this method.
