I did consider a vacuum leak. I tried your vacuum leak test video a while ago with no results. After looking closer It seems like it is coming from below and left of the master cylinder. Any other tips for a leak test ?
Yes. Do you know what the large round object right behind the master cylinder is called ? I think I hear a faint hissing sound coming from right about where the hose connects. Is the air outgoing or incoming ?
Just replaced the thermostat and took it for a test drive. Now between the new Therm. and TPS the car will blast like a bat out of hell !!! Now my ECT is holding at 199 instead of 150-160. It was stuck open. Still a bit boggie with A.C on. New fuel filter will be in tonight. I`ll change and keep ya posted. Thanks again Rich !!! You DA Man !!!!!!
Ok so YouTube people help me out I've got a 2001 pantiac grand am and I'm hoping it's the thermostat but ok so the hose from radiator to engine right were the rubbing hose gets connected to the metal tube leading back to the engine get swollen when the car heats up is this the tube? Or thermostat?or what?
Great video! But I have a question. Before I changed my thermostat my temperature guage would be steady around a quarter of the way. Then it would slowly over heat and increase. Now after i changed it, my temperature guage is steady around half way, and slowly increase from there. Could I have messed up putting it in? I think it's blocking coolant. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
@richpin06a Yes I replaced the temp sensor today after watching your video. It looks like it's the original connector. I did examine it, and it does not show any sign of corrosion.
how much fluid do you think would come out if i drain the radiator and from the engine ? galons? im going to chang emy thermostat on my 91 lesabre this week and i want to make sure i dont mess anything up. and also im going to be changing my crankshaft sensor..if i can find it
@richpin06a Thanks i drained a bit of coolant and as i loosened the thermostat housing some wa sleaking so i drained more till it wasnt over flowing wasnt even a gallon. But yes i changed the thermostat and the camshaft sensor i replaced a few weeks ago. it has made the car better but still if i dont let it warm up enough it turns off and acts up while driving, then it warms up and its ok. I need to replace the timing chain my mechanic says, because something about a magnet ...
@bestamerica ther is a liquid inside of your thermostat and if the thermostat gets to old and leaks it will fuck up your vehicle. not to mention it sucks cock driving in -30 weather without heat
Good job with all the details. I couldn't find your "locking tool" to make to lock "dead centers" on cam-shaft/ fuel injection cam video. Where do I look for this?
Those lyris are very apt -- "What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here" pretty much sums up where I would be without richpin's excellent videos and the help of other fine members of the SaturnFans Forums. Thanks richpin!
If you look the autozone complete assembly is actually a 180F thermostat. They'll tell you that is OEM but OEM is really 195F. You will have a hard time passing SMOG. I would return it and make them give you the true 195F thermostat.
I used a really long extension and a 3/8 universal joint to get the screw on the left out. Or it would be much easier to take the hose off below the lower radiator hose. But with very little hand room and stubborn hose below the thermostat, the universal joint worked nicely.
A wide enough socket will work in case the replacement thermostat doesn't come with the cardboard tube.

@MrRaiders6769 That is the brake booster.A hissing sound is what we call a vacuum leak.

@Shinxxy I presume you have a Saturn but knowing the year is very important in reading the temp gauge.

@richpin06a I apologize, it's a 1995 saturn sl1 sohc.

Nice video (as always). I was wondering though, what camera mounts (if any) do you use to get the shots you have?
When I try to make videos that are that far into the engine bay it's hard for me to find a stable mounting point to put my camera.
