Hmmm. I think my comment is misconstrued. The stones grew tired of the whole "lead guitar player" that Mick Taylor was. His stage presence was , well, very limitied. By lap dog, I meant that Woodie did exactly what he was told, which was to essentially just play a second Richards, and to be there to catch Keith when he wiped out. Which he did marvelously. But the specifically did not WANT someone who would outshine Keith. So even if woody played that way, nobody would hear it.
Thanks for putting it up BTW. Mick T is very humble. This is HIS song, from what I've read. He did all the guitars on it on Sticky Fingers, and they never gave him a credit. Such control freaks. I love the Stones, but like a family, sometimes they piss me off.
@BARKINGattheMOON100 , Why even say that? We're all sad compared to our younger days. I bet you ain't what you used to be either. Oh and nobody knows what a GIT is outside of your little English village.
It was just a very magical time for the stones. Jagger/Richards wrote the best songs and Mick Taylor took the musicianship to another level. Listen to Get Your Ya Ya's Out and Exile on Main Street. Then watch the 2009 show in Japan - what a sad imitation of a once great band. Lightning in a bottle I guess.
@clafong9 Well to be fair 2009 is 40 years later. It's fuckin unrealistic for the Stones to sound anything like they did when they were young and in their prime. They are almost 70 now. Be thankful they can still play at all.
saw this guy a year ago at the bearsville theater in woodstock ny. i was 5 feet away staring straight at him and the band. whiskey in hand and a great show. he came out afterwards and signed stuff for fans. i got 4 sigs out of him that night.
Its always the same ... Compare Wood and Taylor . Mick Taylor was the a leadguitarist and he up the stones to an untouchable level , particulary during STP TOUR and European TOUR . When Woody joined the Stones , they lost their magic sound and played without a leadguitarit but only two rythmic guitarist . But Ron Wood was more friendly and cool guy than Taylor who looked always bored . By the way the stones with wood became very bad compared to the M.Taylor era ...

Mick is overrated. I love the Stones, and I love Mick. But since he is the most technically skilled member of a band that was known for being sloppy, he is deified for simply knowing what to do. His guitar work at the end of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" has been blown way out of proportion. It's a lame attempt to copy Carlos Santana. And that's Mick's main problem, he isn't original. He copies other guitar players. He skill, but no imagination.
@jbrown1169 i supose ronni is making a better job at making instant classics right now with them...lol, at least mick made it to the list of greatest stones albums while that dickhole of ronnie went to make shittier ones
@theachtungtree Well Ronnie's time with The Stones hasn't been their most creative, but Ronnie has written plenty of good tunes in the past. Between his time with Jeff Beck Group, Faces, and having written with George Harrison and Rod Stewart during their solo careers, he has written many more songs, and some really good ones, than Mick. Also, although credited to Jagger/Richards, It's Only Rock N Roll was by Jagger/Wood, so he did write one classic Stones tune, before he was even in the band.
@jbrown1169 absolutely agree...jeff beck, the faces....that's enough for me, plenty of great tunes and classics from him, just brilliant guitar work overall...just that i don't know what happened to him with the stones....sure he looks cooler than taylor or whatever but his work with the stones is just shit, just saying

There are some great comments here– The comparison with Duane Allman— and of course —Mick Taylor the Lion— Love that one — I consider myself a hard core Stones fan, and mecormany’s comment makes me smile— They made great stuff all down the line, but the stuff they made with Taylor will always be their best— they may not agree with us, but for us, there is no doubt Thanks for the great comments— and thanks for posting this vid— Long Live Mick Taylor the Lion!
Mick Taylor was forced out. Keith was treating him like shit and wanted him out to make room for Ron Wood. Plus he got sick of not being given any songwriting credits.
Stag: So all those great players the Stones tried out weren't really under consideration? I disagree: Ron was asked -before- Taylor, & turned it down. He thought he'd break big w/the Faces: He was a partner, so if they made it, he'd make more $ than as a Stones employee, (which he was for many years before he became 'real' Stone.). Mick & Keith strongly disagreed on who was best in the try-outs, so they asked Ron again. This time Ron accepted because the last Faces tour didn't make any money.
@Staggerbaroque Keith didn't want to make room for RW. Fact is, Ronnie was with the Faces, and he didn't even know if he'd be able to tour with the Stones when MT quit.
The sound quality on this video is terrible, However Mick Taylor made a fatal career decision leaving the Stones. What was he thinking, who wouldn't have wanted to play with the best rock band ever, the STONES
@TheMAR1958 Except the day he walked they ceased being the best rock band ever. Wood doesn't mind being treated like crap because he knows he lucked out. With Taylor, the Stones lucked out and when you're a better musician than the rest of the band put together why take BS from a junkie who's collecting your royalties to boot. Their loss, not his.
@mecormany True, but Keith preferred not being shown up on guitar every gig to being in the best band. Taylor was becoming a junkie himself, one of the reasons he wanted out.
@TheMAR1958 --Taylor wanted to be given more credit, and jagger/Richards wouldnt give it. Sometimes pride means more than fame, $. His choice. Butwhat a guitar player!
@loyaldude10 He made the right decision. Fuck Jagger and Richards! Fucking egoists...if I write a song I PRETEND some credit...fuck them...they lost the best guitar player ever!
@bellazedo You're info is incorrect. That's not how it went down. He felt overshadowed by Mick and Keith. He made a dumb decision, left him totally penniless and he could be a very rich man today. And in a great band.
he left the stones because he was bored of it and wanted to broaden his musical horizons as the stones was too easy for him and needed a challenge, a man who sacrafices fortune and fame for his musical integrity is ok by me everyday!! mick taylor rules!!!
They made the best tracks when Mick Taylor was in the band.. But the band has never been better in my opinion.. and if Mick Taylor Replaced Ronnie Wood.. It would sound alot better.. i mean Alot!! but there wouldnt be the same chemistry..
When Bill Wyman left the Stones, there were rumors saying that Mick Taylor could come back on guitar while Ron Wood would switch to bass. How wonderful it would have been ...
It is hard to argue with the opinion that the best stuff the stones ever did was with Mick Taylor. He just had it, and still did circa this recording. Granted Gram Parsons and Ry Cooder were also influencial in the stones direction, but Taylor was "the" Force during the Stones greatest years by far. Woods did nothing in comparison to Taylor's contribution to the Stones. Rock on Mick, you are a legend. If Mayall thought you were good, then obviously you were a legend in the making..
I'm 37 and I thought that the 1975 version of the Stones (flatbed concert through NYC) was THE Stones. I liked 70-75 the best. I like their stuff with Ron Wood but this stuff sounded more raw
MT...as in Mount Taylor, Jagger probably could not stand next to a force greater than himself,,,,,So MT ever the gentleman Exited...As some of Us wonder....Ron what have you really contributed...besides looking the part?..ok maybe a couple of songs....and some innovation yes...MT's talent Outshines You dear One, that is that is what drove You into the ......needle....
I guess this is Taylors song. The stones have only did it once live since Taylor left as far as I know. Keith didnt even play a note on sticky fingers recording of it. Wish Taylor could have stayed. Probably better for him that he didnt. Life is worth more than money.
@jfarrelly13 So what. Why do Mick Taylor fans have to pick on Ronnie Wood? He took a gig that Taylor gave up. I love M Taylor and Ronnie and the Stones, but you know what? You should be slamming Mick Taylor for being stupid enough to quit. Dummy. Don't blame Woody for taking the gig. And Woody rocks. Sorry. Love his playing and persona on stage, so tough. You're not a real Stones fan if you down him, and I think 1972 was the best, but I still love Woody and today's Stones.
@stableshadow RW is a Stones thoroughbred. Maybe the band peaked between 68-72, with hindsight. That run of 4 great albums is unsurpassed by any band. Began before MT joined with Beggars Banquet. MJ and KR never managed to do the same again, but that's not just because MT was in the band and then wasn't. I think it is reasonable to speculate that without Ron Wood's interventions the band may have caved-in during the early 80s. He weaves brilliantly - check out Beast of Burden 1978 Fort Worth gig
@MMRJL Cheers. Agree 100%. I can't stand these fucking pseudo-fans who bitterly bitch about Ronnie. MT QUIT 36 years ago -- they need to GET OVER IT. I hope he comes back for the final tour. That would be grand. He, Ronnie, Keith all working magic. Bring Buddy Guy on with them and it will rock. I bet MT would only have good things to say about Ronnie. The only thing I don't like about RW is the way he's treated his wife as late.
@jfarrelly13 So what. You act like it's his fucking fault MT quit the band. Why don't you criticize MT for making one of the STUPIDEST fucking decisions any musician could have made in the last fifty years. He robbed you of him. The Stones didn't.
Maybe because he's Ron Wood and not Mick Taylor? To put some heat on, imho is Ron playing the better slide, he's got soul and not just technique and flash offs like Mick.
But one of Jagger's biggest accomplishments is that he rescued these guys music from obscurity by covering it (whereas the Beatles whitened up their black influences).
If it wasn't for jagger and co we'd not have heard of them and they would have died penniless. Credit where it's due. Anyone who knows what they are talking about know full well the originators are pretty thankful for the Uk's players bring the music to the public. And the touches some of these bands added made the music into a new artform.
What a frik'n joke. Innovators and COPYISTS?? Face it PAL the "blue prints" were given by the blues greats of the Pre Brit rock era. Who are beloved and most highly esteemed. I f you are honestly blind or deaf to the fact that these are the guys that took those prints (because they love them btw) and built those original basic inventions into the fantastic music we were lucky enough to get to enjoy . Get of your phony high horse.
Pre Brit rock American music is surely the source. I agree but Blues had such a cross cultural birth and upbringing that it becomes difficult to separate. Blues only came from American Blacks that had already been influenced by the European Classic and Folk Music in early America ( Africa had none of the same harmony nor structure as blues). Then it bounces back and forth. The British get a hold of it and bend , add and polish it some and show us what a lot of us had forgotten we had.
Taylor could and can play rings around Wood with one arm cut off. Keith wanted Taylor out of the Stones because by 73 on stage the band followed Taylor. Check out any booleg from that time. Taylor was on another planet compared to the rest of the band. The only thing Wood brings to the table is he doesn't make KR look like an amateur night after night.
Yeah, but he was also frustrated because we wasn't credited for his compositions, which is really unacceptable. Jagger and Richard, though I love 'em musically, had always been greedy.
Wood was really awful on the last tour. His solos are so sloppy it's really annoying.
@poprip Why, because I find snobbish pseudo-fans annoying? Every time I'm on a Mick Taylor site, there are people who rip on Ronnie. Not his fault Mick Taylor made the dumb move of quitting. So he wasn't credited. I'd be fuckin' angry, too, but there's a big picture. RW co-wrote It's Only Rock and Roll, gave it to Jagger, and then it became a hit without Wood's name on it. Did that cause him to reject an offer to join the Stones. No. Because he saw the bigger picture.
@stableshadow Snobbish pseudo-fans?? Get some medecine boy! I love the stones for their MUSIC, not for them personally. I don't care if Ron Wood is a good guy, the fact of the matter is, he is sloppy live since many years, PERIOD. Mick Taylor is still amazing to listen to. Sure he should have stayed in the band. So what? Does that make you a superhero with the right to piss on anybody thinking diffenrently?
@poprip You should learn to see the bigger picture, too. But instead, you would rather paint me as a psycho for being staunch in my disagreement with your points. How very old-school Soviet of you. I now promote you from DICK to DICKSUCK. Congrats, Comrade.
@sciuto01 You're making up your own facts. Taylor quit. Period. He made a HUGE mistake and ROBBED YOU of his own playing with the Stones. That's it. Keith didn't push him out.
Er, the intention was not to slate the Stones. Anyone who seriously considers them to be just a 'pop band' - and what's wrong with that? - needs to listen to Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Mainstreet....Keef should be carried around in a sedan chair just for 'Gimme Shelter' alone. The band Williamson heard was not the same group by '69.
Mick Taylor contributed a lot to the stones but he never received proper credites for the songs he co-wrote with jagger instead of Ronnie Wood who didn't contribute nothing but he received a better treatment by Keith Richards only because he couldn't upstage him being an amateur and drunk guitar player
This Taylor and Wood argument is simple to sum up in my eyes.
The taylor era was great, probably the stones at their best, But he couldnt hack the way the stones roll.
Wood hasnt got the technical ability in his playing compared to Taylor. But he has proved himself in the Stones, he is a great player when he isnt wasted! The fact is, he is still in the band and they are still rocking. Love him or hate him he is a true Rolling Stone.
Mick almost always plays slide in standard tuning. You should check out the Brussels Affair '73 bootleg. MT plays slide over every song and just smokes. It's no wonder the Grimmer's were relieved when he left. And it's no surprise they picked a pedestrian player like Wood - nothing against the guy -- but he sure wasn't going to make people leave a concert buzzing about his playing instead of how cool Jagger and Richard posed and pranced.
One of my personal favorite stones songs

@loyaldude10 He made the right decision. Fuck Jagger and Richards! Fucking egoists...if I write a song I PRETEND some credit...fuck them...they lost the best guitar player ever!

@bellazedo You're info is incorrect. That's not how it went down. He felt overshadowed by Mick and Keith. He made a dumb decision, left him totally penniless and he could be a very rich man today. And in a great band.

@Roscoe1144 I agree. The Stones should try THREE guitars. Bring Taylor on as a DG -- Designated Guitarist.

he left the stones because he was bored of it and wanted to broaden his musical horizons as the stones was too easy for him and needed a challenge, a man who sacrafices fortune and fame for his musical integrity is ok by me everyday!! mick taylor rules!!!

The combination of slide & pedal is killer. Carla Olson is hot. She gives good C&W with Gene Clarke.

They made the best tracks when Mick Taylor was in the band.. But the band has never been better in my opinion.. and if Mick Taylor Replaced Ronnie Wood.. It would sound alot better.. i mean Alot!! but there wouldnt be the same chemistry..
MrToorude 1 year ago
When Bill Wyman left the Stones, there were rumors saying that Mick Taylor could come back on guitar while Ron Wood would switch to bass. How wonderful it would have been ...
guillll 1 year ago

I guess this is Taylors song. The stones have only did it once live since Taylor left as far as I know. Keith didnt even play a note on sticky fingers recording of it. Wish Taylor could have stayed. Probably better for him that he didnt. Life is worth more than money.

agooTV 1 year ago
@jfarrelly13 So what. Why do Mick Taylor fans have to pick on Ronnie Wood? He took a gig that Taylor gave up. I love M Taylor and Ronnie and the Stones, but you know what? You should be slamming Mick Taylor for being stupid enough to quit. Dummy. Don't blame Woody for taking the gig. And Woody rocks. Sorry. Love his playing and persona on stage, so tough. You're not a real Stones fan if you down him, and I think 1972 was the best, but I still love Woody and today's Stones.
stableshadow 1 year ago
@stableshadow RW is a Stones thoroughbred. Maybe the band peaked between 68-72, with hindsight. That run of 4 great albums is unsurpassed by any band. Began before MT joined with Beggars Banquet. MJ and KR never managed to do the same again, but that's not just because MT was in the band and then wasn't. I think it is reasonable to speculate that without Ron Wood's interventions the band may have caved-in during the early 80s. He weaves brilliantly - check out Beast of Burden 1978 Fort Worth gig
MMRJL 1 year ago
@MMRJL Cheers. Agree 100%. I can't stand these fucking pseudo-fans who bitterly bitch about Ronnie. MT QUIT 36 years ago -- they need to GET OVER IT. I hope he comes back for the final tour. That would be grand. He, Ronnie, Keith all working magic. Bring Buddy Guy on with them and it will rock. I bet MT would only have good things to say about Ronnie. The only thing I don't like about RW is the way he's treated his wife as late.
stableshadow 1 year ago
@jfarrelly13 So what. You act like it's his fucking fault MT quit the band. Why don't you criticize MT for making one of the STUPIDEST fucking decisions any musician could have made in the last fifty years. He robbed you of him. The Stones didn't.

And the touches some of these bands added made the music into a new artform.
moreteacthulhu 2 years ago
What a frik'n joke. Innovators and COPYISTS?? Face it PAL the "blue prints" were given by the blues greats of the Pre Brit rock era. Who are beloved and most highly esteemed. I f you are honestly blind or deaf to the fact that these are the guys that took those prints (because they love them btw) and built those original basic inventions into the fantastic music we were lucky enough to get to enjoy . Get of your phony high horse.
drj602 2 years ago 2
Pre Brit rock American music is surely the source. I agree but Blues had such a cross cultural birth and upbringing that it becomes difficult to separate. Blues only came from American Blacks that had already been influenced by the European Classic and Folk Music in early America ( Africa had none of the same harmony nor structure as blues). Then it bounces back and forth. The British get a hold of it and bend , add and polish it some and show us what a lot of us had forgotten we had.

dannyd1572 2 years ago
Taylor could and can play rings around Wood with one arm cut off. Keith wanted Taylor out of the Stones because by 73 on stage the band followed Taylor. Check out any booleg from that time. Taylor was on another planet compared to the rest of the band. The only thing Wood brings to the table is he doesn't make KR look like an amateur night after night.
sciuto01 2 years ago 8
Yeah, but he was also frustrated because we wasn't credited for his compositions, which is really unacceptable. Jagger and Richard, though I love 'em musically, had always been greedy.
Wood was really awful on the last tour. His solos are so sloppy it's really annoying.
poprip 2 years ago 4
@poprip Then don't go see them dickface. I thought his solos were superb.
stableshadow 1 year ago
@stableshadow woh we have an angry fanboy here. There are professionals that can help you .
poprip 1 year ago
@poprip Why, because I find snobbish pseudo-fans annoying? Every time I'm on a Mick Taylor site, there are people who rip on Ronnie. Not his fault Mick Taylor made the dumb move of quitting. So he wasn't credited. I'd be fuckin' angry, too, but there's a big picture. RW co-wrote It's Only Rock and Roll, gave it to Jagger, and then it became a hit without Wood's name on it. Did that cause him to reject an offer to join the Stones. No. Because he saw the bigger picture.
stableshadow 1 year ago
@stableshadow Snobbish pseudo-fans?? Get some medecine boy! I love the stones for their MUSIC, not for them personally. I don't care if Ron Wood is a good guy, the fact of the matter is, he is sloppy live since many years, PERIOD. Mick Taylor is still amazing to listen to. Sure he should have stayed in the band. So what? Does that make you a superhero with the right to piss on anybody thinking diffenrently?
poprip 1 year ago
@poprip You should learn to see the bigger picture, too. But instead, you would rather paint me as a psycho for being staunch in my disagreement with your points. How very old-school Soviet of you. I now promote you from DICK to DICKSUCK. Congrats, Comrade.
stableshadow 1 year ago
@sciuto01 You're making up your own facts. Taylor quit. Period. He made a HUGE mistake and ROBBED YOU of his own playing with the Stones. That's it. Keith didn't push him out.

clean3 3 years ago
Er, the intention was not to slate the Stones. Anyone who seriously considers them to be just a 'pop band' - and what's wrong with that? - needs to listen to Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Mainstreet....Keef should be carried around in a sedan chair just for 'Gimme Shelter' alone. The band Williamson heard was not the same group by '69.
clean3 3 years ago

Love him or hate him he is a true Rolling Stone.
keefytot 3 years ago
Just as well MT 'hacked it' long enough to contribute towards some of the most potent music the Stones ever played.

Thats what i said.

Is Mick playing in standard tuning? Seems to me that he is.
pantherpawed 3 years ago
Mick almost always plays slide in standard tuning. You should check out the Brussels Affair '73 bootleg. MT plays slide over every song and just smokes. It's no wonder the Grimmer's were relieved when he left. And it's no surprise they picked a pedestrian player like Wood - nothing against the guy -- but he sure wasn't going to make people leave a concert buzzing about his playing instead of how cool Jagger and Richard posed and pranced.
