This movie is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. There is one part I don't quite understand though, and I would like to understand it [as minor as it is in the films overall plot]: The woman who brings the child to the temple at the end (the one with the scarf over her face), who is she?
I didn't know he is a Catholic, but if true I see what you mean. The theme of the movie is one of the most difficult teachings in Buddhism imho; love is pain. Captured very well in the movie with the words of "the master", something in the line of "everything that is beautiful is desired by everyone else."
What I meant to say is that the guy's love for the girl is selfish love; he loves the girl because he himself (his ego) is desiring the girl. When the girl went with someone else, his ego (desire for her)got hurt, and out of jealousy/hate he killed the girl. If he truly loved her, he should just have accepted it. In this context, even love is pain.
The love from the masters is unconditional/enlightened and not selfish, they brought up the children without asking (desiring) anything in return.
I wouldn't say life is to suffer either but struggle, perhaps, would be a better notion :)
Struggle to do good continuously and refraining from what is harmful...struggle to be patient during severe hardship and staying on the Path, if you like.
The notion of perpetual suffering seems to be a sadistic one...just my thoughts:)
No he did not stay with the girl he murdered the girl later one. You did not see that but at 2.53 he comes back from her after killing her. It is a sad story
this movie already has great music which fits the scenario...theres no need to put a different background track clippings of this movie...it only degrades the experience of this fine movie
I aggree. During the workshop in CENJOR, we were asked to choose alternative music to the movies, not the original sound track. This Kim Ki Duk's movie is a masterpiece: everything is perfect. Look for "cenjor2007", and there you can watch the other clips, edited during the workshop. There's another "version" of this picture with music from "Madredeus", a very famous portuguese band.
Hey Cenjor...I appreciate your acceptance of my comment in good spirit. I am from India..travelled the east a bit..and quite into music myself. this movie has made people pause and ponder...the bckgrnd score is mesmerizing. But your other work is good. Can u tell me which tools did u use.
Hi! My name is Jorge. Cenjor is a school of journalism in Lisbon where I did this workshop. We used Adobe 2.0. I'm glad you liked "MadreDeus" music which I used in the other clip. By the way, I liked very much "Water" an indian film directed by Deepa Metha. Did you like too?Why don´t you work on it?
Muito bom trabalho Jorge! Parabens e obrigado!

Funny that Kim is a Catholic yet he chose to make such a beautiful film on Buddhism and more importantly, the meaning of life!

I'm not sure if I agree that love is pain, but once you recognize that life is suffering, it no longer becomes about suffering.

I love the soundtrack but think it more appropriate to have a native american theme for the video to whom the music belongs............
