There is no contradiction unless you equate Shaolin Kung Fu with modern Shaolin Wushu Monks. They are different. What the modern Shaolin Wushu Monks do is not what I would call genuine, traditional Shaolin Kung Fu.
Agreed, many people are falling for the Government endorsed 'Wushu' shaolin monks, against the Traditional Shaolin Kungfu that has been banned from China dynasties ago. The Traditional Shaolin is the origin of most Kungfu families (Hung Gar, Choi Li Fut, Wing Chun, etc). The modern Shaolin is the origin of misconceptions. However, it is not to mistake that there are items (like qi gong excercises) that the monks do practice from original masters.
Haha. Alot of these bad comments I see on here and many other Shoalin vids seem to be comming from little kids who think roid-heads that do MMA is the best. Shoalin is a very beautiful and deadly effective art. Much respect.
Wow... I'm sorry. I apparently watch this video a lot. I just noticed that I made the same exact comment less than a month ago... I should really just not comment after being awake more than 25 hours ^_^.
Reading alot of comments not just here, I continually read negative comments from people or how theirs is better, these tend to come from mainly students. Science is a recent new skill man has improved on there was religion or legend previously, how did we get by before science?. Science doesnt have all the answers and some questions are beyond sciences comprehension at this time.
yomrd, your comments denying chi has already limited your capacity to progress beyond those scientific barriers.
Actually, I think they are just being flat out ignorant. They is very much scientific proof that chi does exist. They are just stubborn and deny something that is right in front of them because they were trained from day 1 to believe that "if you're not big and bad your nothing." I mean, there is more scientific proof that chi exists than there is what Jesus Christ was a real person and that is already historic.
Actually the Chinese proved the existence of Chi energy through an Ultraviolet screening of a Tai Chi student.Sure enough you could see it radiating from the core of his stomach flowing all through his body and even outside of it.Kind of like an aura almost.
Very true. There is more scientific proof that Chi exists than there is that Jesus Christ was a real person. And since it is a historical fact that such a person existed, rest is needless to say.
of those who do not understand what My Sifu is trying to show in these video clips, This video and his comments earlier are to show the Fact that the Internal is also apart of the Forms displayed and practiced we as students of Wahnam learn the Interal aspect of This particular Kung Fu, At the Very Beginning. In General we call this building Internal Force. Which most of you seem to know little about.
I must chose to disagree with many posts I have seen...Meditation and its theory can be transformative, but I know from observing others that the type of control that the shaolin and other exhibits requires VERY extreme work and discipline. This is not all hogwash (some is), and most that denegrate it have never seen a person transformed by it....My two cents. Good day.
So, what is this "energy" you speak of? How does THAT work? If it is about chi circulation, it is really a shame that as a teacher you are propagating this myth. It's just as bad as saying kung fu comes from Shaolin or Bodhidharma!!
I feel sad for you. I really do. You practice Taijiquan, and yet you don't even believe in chi. I, on the other hand, experience it every day. It is very real. I used it to heal myself, and I can use it to heal others. If you are scientific minded, like me, then you will be curious to read the various articles on my website here: flowingzen(dot)com/science(dot)htm
I happen to practice a lot of different forms, not just Yang style. If you do your research you will find the truth behind Chinese folklore/myth. The Boxers thought that their chi would save them from weapons and bullets but look what happened to them! If you think you are actually healing yourself or someone by using "chi", youre kidding yourself or have an overinflated ego and probably a god complex! I feel sorry for your students, especially if they are paying you!
Yes, my students are just kidding themselves into healing their migraines, menstrual cramps, depression, chronic pain, anxiety, carpal tunnel syndrome, varicose veins, chronic fatigue, herniated discs, hypertension, and countless other disorders. It's all in their head!
You can't fix physical problems with mythical chi. What arte doing is fooling/brainwashing people into thinking they are healed, until the problem gets worse and they wind up in the hospital! There has been no reputable scientific documentation to prove chi exists. And you are fooling yourself and your students if you think you can alter their physical being with chi. Snake oil salseman!
LOL. So when physicians using modern technology verify that physical issues (like herniated discs) have improved, am I brainwashing the doctors as well?
Right. It's just a coincidence that hundreds of people who've had no relief from Western medicine despite years of treatment suddenly improve after learning Cosmos Chi Kung!
You've obviously made up your mind. But you haven't been scientific about it. I tell all of my students not to take what I say on faith alone, but to put it to the test with practice. The truth that they learn from their own experience is that Cosmos Chi Kung works.
The only thing they are doing is relieving stress through meditation! There has NEVER been ANY scientific evidence for chi. It's a nice science fiction concept, but it is foolishness.
You are wrong. I can prove it. Go to PubMed(dot)com. If you don't know what PubMed is, then you have no business talking about scientific evidence. Type in "qigong". Spend an hour reading. And then open your eyes and your mind.
does it realy matter either way? if u believe in it then please use it, for it sounds like an amazing thing....and if u dont use it and it sounds like a load of guff then dont....why do u have to fight over the fact that you r right......use what you prefer and leave others to there own
You need to be more fluid. It is good to go slow and pause after every move in practice, but if you are performing a complete form, it should be smooth and flowing. It basically looks like you haven't been doing kung fu for very long.
Flowing force? Can you explain this? You should try to relax through the form and be fluid. It looks like you are posing like a mannequin at every movement. If you want to know what I mean, look up Shaolin monks on here.
Flowing force? Can you explain this? You should try to relax through the form and be fluid. It looks like you are posing like a mannequin at every movement. If you want to know what I mean, look up Shaolin monks on here.
Yes, I had a feeling you would mention the Shaolin Monks. That explains things. Anyway, we have different opinions about what constitutes good kung fu. In my opinion, what the Shaolin Monks show is "flowery fists and embroidery kicks". Beautiful to watch, but empty of content.
I agree that they are very flowery, but it was just an example of fluidity and blending transitions with appropriate pauses. I disagree that they are empty of content! For example, if you got into a fight and fought as slow as you are doing your forms, you would catch a beating. The partial reason for doing forms is to train your body to react without thinking, and quickly. I think you are thinking through it too much and being too deliberate? Just an observation.
Is this a video of actual performance speed or is it slowed down for student understanding?
I practice an old, full length yang tai chi form as an internal form, and very slowly and only use those applications to deflect an attacking person away and give them a chance to reconsider, which they usually do.
That is different from practicing an external form slowly because external forms are meant to emulate fighting off multiple attackers with speed and power.
The Shaolinquan that I practice and teach is an internal martial art. Like all internal martial arts, the movements are designed for fighting. And like all internal martial arts, the speed can be varied for different purposes. Typically, Shaolinquan is done faster than Taijiquan, but in this case, it was done slowly to focus on form and energy flow.
Look up any number of shaolin quan forms on here and note the fluidity and speed between transitions. Notice how power and speed are generated through smooth movements? That's what you want.
No, that's not what I want. But thank you for the suggestion. Most of the Shaolin forms are just wushu. As I said, they are flowery fists and embroidery kicks. What I want is flowing force with proper focus and intent.
I don't think you are correct here. If you think the Shaolin Kung fu is so "empty of content" you don't know enough about it. I really think you should try to practice your Kung Fu there. Try to study there for a year. And then you could say if it is empty of content or not.
I did not say that Shaolin Kung Fu is empty of content. I think that most of the Shaolin Kung Fu that you see today, particularly from China and the Shaolin Wushu Monks, is empty of real content. I don't need to go to China to know this. I've met a few of the monks, and I've seen how they train.
it might just be the video, but sometimes, it looks like you have something between an open palm and a tiger palm. might want to make that distinction clearer. but otherwise pretty good form
Thanks for the comment. If you tell me the time stamp for the patterns in question, I can tell you whether they are Dragon Palms, Tiger Claws, or another technique.
I believe the shaolin five animals was much broader than what we see today. Many of the animals had individual styles. I have found crane tech in CLF that I don't see and was not taught from HG. Also there are crane tech in HG that are no in CLF. The internal training in the dragon of HG is priceless! Some branches of CLF do a lot of internal training.I have the best of both worlds.
I like the double back fist in CLF also the spinning back fist. CLF has several veriations of the back fist. One called dot choy or bing choy. This is a horizontal back fist. your regular back fist called Kwai choy is is more of a diagional strike. The kwai choy has many applications. Breaking the bridge or destroying the bridge ect... Devastating close in tech.
In sparring CLF has quicker foot work and the stances not as low as in HG. Also it has many swinging punches, many circular punches. lot of leopard hands. Hung you have more strait punches. including sunfist and ping choy also called chung choy, or jin choy, referred to in karate as a reverse punch. HG is a more strait foward system, very powerful. Much emphasis in put on bridging. ClF is realies on speed and power.
It originated from Funkien. Funkien White crane is where Hung Gar get its crane techniques. I see many similarities in these systems. But I perfer to stick with kung fu!
Yes I have read your teachers book. I bought a copy several years ago. It is a good book. I have tried to read everything thats written about the five animals and systems based on the five animals. I have read and watched some karate videos and books on the art of Uechi Ryu. Uechi Ryu is based on the dragon the tiger and the crane.
Good set! Good luck in your training. I created several sets one day I may post them if I ever get them on tape. I am a Hung Gar and CLF player. I see this as growth. Taking movements ,paterns applications and tech from different sets and combining them to create new sets is how you develope any system. Everything evelves. I keep my HG pure and my CLF pure in practice and in application but in fighting or sparring I can flow from one to the other or Tai Chi.
Thanks for the comment. Have you read my teacher's book, "The Art of Shaolin Kung Fu"? I think you'll enjoy it. Also, perhaps you'd like to share your experience sparring with Hung Gar and Choy Li Fat?
Is this a form that you created or one you learned from your teacher? I study Choy Lay Fut, Wing Chun, and Western Boxing. I've been thinking about creating my own form but I'm not sure how or if I should. Anyway, good work. Keep it up.
Thank you for the kind words. I created this form myself, although I learned all of the individual patterns from my teacher. You can read more in the description to the right.
Thank you for the comment, but I disagree. I do not think that my movements are stiff. I feel that they are flowing and full of power. Perhaps you would like to show us a video of yourself?
Thank you for sharing a video of yourself. You mentioned that you had 4 lessons from 3 schools in 2 different styles. In my opinion, you should learn and practice more before being critical of others. For a beginner, you are not bad, but you clearly need instruction, practice, and discipline. All the best to you in your journey.
