Double tonguing...boo...and I was a bassoonist. You know how hard it is to double tongue on a bassoon as a high schooler? This one was one my favorites, though. We had some amazing french horns who knew how to rip it like nothing else.
Ah jeez.......not required by law, just a great work. When it comes to wind bands we are limited to really great works......this just happens to be one of the best, along with anything Persichetti, Chance, Holst, Graniger and yes Sousa........we all pay our dues! Just enjoy :)
playing this peace at our concert festival made me so proud to be a french horn player when we got straight one! such a fun peace to play and even better to hear!
Dr. Jenkins was my composition teacher for my Master of Music degree in Composition at Duquesne University. He is still a great friend, and still composing at age 83!--Dr. Eugene M. Dangelo
@dguess - I would listen to Gordon Jenkins' "Manhattan Tower" and anything by Clinton Williams, who I had the privilege to know and play horn with. Also, listen to William Walton's "Orb and Scepter" performed by Eastern Wind Ens. This last piece obviously influenced a young John Williams.
This was the first song I ever did a French Horn solo on... It was terrifying, but went pretty well considering I had been playing French horn for 6 months at that point.
@HollyHood3137 WHADDUP ROB?! haha dude I played this this year in wind ensemble as a sight reading thing. He wouldn't let us play it at concert! Haha. Played very well in this video! Bravo. Love trumpet solos.
Is this the actual tempo it's meant to be played at, or did you speed it up a little? My bands playing this currently, and while the tempo is up there, this is noticeably faster.
Awesome recording! I'm playing timpani on this in my wind ensemble. Although it's really fun, it's a little frustrating to play with all the key changes and having to use the school's crappy timpanis.
Played this in 1974 Watkins Glen Squires Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps, arranged by Al (Corky) Fabrizio......one most fun charts we ever did. Thanks Corkey your the best.
Played this at a band camp for seniors (age 50+) a couple of years ago. I played first horn -- but all four horns have tough parts. At our last brass sectional rehearsal, one of the other players said "Let's hear it for the horns." Praise from one's peers is especially satisfying.
yeah, i understand that feeling. i'm first chair horn at my highschool and my director handed me the first part to this song today and told me to look at it...its very...well, you know. =p
I have to play this at my high school, im a freshman and i play trumpet but thinking about playing French horn on this, the tonguing is going to be my only trouble
I LOVED playing this!! we played it my freshman year in my high school's wind ensemble and i think we pulled it off pretty well!! we also played incantation and dance by john barnes chance which is my favourite piece ever
This piece is amazing. Getting me to play it THAT well with all the triple tonguing and all that would take a couple more years of experience. I'll get there. My band and I next year are doing the Jay Dawson arrangement for marching.
Were playing this right now for band. Actually one of the band directors for one of the concert bands at my school had the composer Jenkins as a professor in college and he pointed out one mistake to him one day and Jenkins hated him ever since and got really mad. It was a really funny story and no matter what he did the director couldnt get an A in his class, he even had this musical genius class mate do his homework once to prove the point and that guy never got anything but As and he got a B+
DUDE, KICK-ASS! Do you think you can find a concert band arrangement of "All Through the Night"? Maybe even "Eagle Mark Summit", or some more stuff from Clare Grundman? :)

Exactly right crazybistro! The new full score and parts are out, edited according to the composer's wishes :)

Fun fact, contrary to popular belief, at the begining is NOT supposed to be a horn rip. It was just a smudge on the score and original :D
