  • Double tonguing...boo...and I was a bassoonist. You know how hard it is to double tongue on a bassoon as a high schooler? This one was one my favorites, though. We had some amazing french horns who knew how to rip it like nothing else.

  • Ah jeez.......not required by law, just a great work. When it comes to wind bands we are limited to really great works......this just happens to be one of the best, along with anything Persichetti, Chance, Holst, Graniger and yes Sousa........we all pay our dues! Just enjoy :)

  • playing this peace at our concert festival made me so proud to be a french horn player when we got straight one! such a fun peace to play and even better to hear!

  • *jizz*

  • in marching band we play parts of this for our america show it was epic

  • Tanker60a3 You are so right! lol

  • daaang! I wish my band in high school played this, it's sounds soooooo good!!!!

  • Does anyone have the 1st French horn part? I would love to play this.! :D

  • Dr. Jenkins was my composition teacher for my Master of Music degree in Composition at Duquesne University. He is still a great friend, and still composing at age 83!--Dr. Eugene M. Dangelo

  • @dguess - I would listen to Gordon Jenkins' "Manhattan Tower" and anything by Clinton Williams, who I had the privilege to know and play horn with. Also, listen to William Walton's "Orb and Scepter" performed by Eastern Wind Ens. This last piece obviously influenced a young John Williams.

  • GENIUS!!!

  • I played this in high school for contest 49 years ago - what a hoot ! We had a super horn section at the time and got sweepstakes with it.

  • @rwhutchnlj How do you compare band music then and now? I'm starting out in high school and I'd like ti hear some feedback :)

  • I loved playing this song!

  • This was the first song I ever did a French Horn solo on... It was terrifying, but went pretty well considering I had been playing French horn for 6 months at that point.

  • Exactly right crazybistro! The new full score and parts are out, edited according to the composer's wishes :)

  • Fun fact, contrary to popular belief, at the begining is NOT supposed to be a horn rip. It was just a smudge on the score and original :D

  • Who is performing this?

  • @HollyHood3137 WHADDUP ROB?! haha dude I played this this year in wind ensemble as a sight reading thing. He wouldn't let us play it at concert! Haha. Played very well in this video! Bravo. Love trumpet solos.

  • Love how quiet the snares can get

  • Playing this in band man cant believe it! Love this song sounds awesome!

  • Saw the marine band perform this live x) it was awsome

  • We are playing this in our band, go FRENCH HORNS! :D

  • Piccolo, whatwhaaaaat.

And anything with a good horn part tickles my fancy.

  • Trombone part's fun to play too, once you get the hang of the double-tonguing.

  • Is this the actual tempo it's meant to be played at, or did you speed it up a little? My bands playing this currently, and while the tempo is up there, this is noticeably faster.

  • we are going to play this next year and im the first horn player. should i be scared? lol

  • @HollyHood3137 You should be scared. :P The rhythms get a little tricky. ;) We are playing this know in band, and I loveeeeeee it! :D

  • A shade on the fast side, but the accuracy and skill of the ensemble carries the day. Great performance!

  • This song is so hard for me, haha buts its so fun.

  • @ADOHIN96 same here i have had to practice it for like ever just to get a little below tempo

  • i fricken LOVE this piece.

  • I LOVE THE BRASS AT THE BEGINNING!!! And th clarinet parts. I wish we could play this piece.

  • I totally agree with NinjaDelcatty! I'm 3rd clarinet. :)

  • I'm not first horn.

I'm not even a horn player.

    Actually, I'm playing 4th clarinet.

IT'S STILL FUN AS HELL TO PLAY. o3ob

  • 1:06 Possibly the greatest french horn part ever created!

  • This piece is so much fun to play. First horn baby! :)

  • Pretty great. Well played, but unfortunate that the first trumpet couldn't slur up to that high b flat concert in the intro.

  • Awesome recording! I'm playing timpani on this in my wind ensemble. Although it's really fun, it's a little frustrating to play with all the key changes and having to use the school's crappy timpanis.

  • Played this in 1974 Watkins Glen Squires Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps, arranged by Al (Corky) Fabrizio......one most fun charts we ever did. Thanks Corkey your the best.

  • Played this my Sophomore year in HS. Fucking awesome.

  • Heh, did anyone in band for the last 50 years NOT play this? I think it's required by law, along with Folk Song Suite and anything by Percy Grainger.

  • @Tanker60a3 I've played this and Lincolnshire Posy twice each within the last 3 years.

  • @Tanker60a3 LOL! THAT IS SOOOOOOOOO TRUE! WE JUST PLAYED A PIECE BY PERCY GRAINGER LAST NIGHT!

  • this is my last year in band...and I play horn and we're playing this piece :) good way to go out.

  • my band tried playin this it just got to fast for our small high school band :D...now we are playing Mirage of Figaro

  • Very nice!

  • im starting this in my highschool band this year. im 2nd horn. im excited :)

  • Played this in hs in the 50's still love it!

  • @TheRevlagough What an age you grew up in .. I am envious

  • Played this at a band camp for seniors (age 50+) a couple of years ago. I played first horn -- but all four horns have tough parts. At our last brass sectional rehearsal, one of the other players said "Let's hear it for the horns." Praise from one's peers is especially satisfying.

  • I was excited for this piece, since I'm a horn player ^_^

Then I found out I'm getting braces around the time we play it. Oh Lord.

  • i love how this piece has 3 baritone parts! it makes it even more cool! i play first on it both times we played it though =P

  • I played this song, when I was in Band, in the early 80's.

    Love this song.

  • i want to play this piece i could prolly play the hell out of it. lol.

  • if you listen carefully, you can totally hear santa clause is coming to town at 0:50

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!

    GO FRENCH HORNS!! :)

  • I played this piece my freshman year of high school and I I've loved it ever since! It's a lot of fun to play... especially for us horn players!

  • best french horn part at 1:07

and at 3:45 with the euphoniums!

  • Love the Piccolo part so much. Played it at a Band Camp 2 summers ago. Trying to get my band director to play!

    Definitely an Amazing piece :D

  • Wow, this is seriously AMAZING! Great piccolo part! *flutist* ;D

  • aw man i have to play this for my band and i'm the french horn....man

  • @carson4004

yeah, i understand that feeling. i'm first chair horn at my highschool and my director handed me the first part to this song today and told me to look at it...its very...well, you know. =p

  • it's soooo hard and i have only been playing the French horn for a year

  • LUCKY!, id kill to play french horn

  • @carson4004 Me too...not fun to sight read this D:

  • @carson4004

aw quit complaining, i would LOVE to play this song! we read it but then our rival school played it lol

  • @ORANGESare4squares : aw that sucks but i wasn't very good at playing the french horn then i didn't want to let the band down

  • @carson4004 dude the french horns ARE this piece!

  • @carson4004 that's a good thing! :D haha, have fun with it!

  • @carson4004 Already did it---best experience ever! Seriously, you'll feel like the biggest, dorkiest badass once you nail it :)

  • @carson4004 c'mon man. this is an amazing part. i play french horn too and were playing this for band later this year.

  • @carson4004 aw man? I am pumped to play this! I play french horn!

  • I have to play this at my high school, im a freshman and i play trumpet but thinking about playing French horn on this, the tonguing is going to be my only trouble

  • This song is difficult from all that tonguing. Other than that, this piece is amazing.

  • i love my horn part in this song!!!! its so fun....but triple tounging is not. this song is awesome!!!!!!

  • Triple tonguing is fun, however there is no triple tonguing required, all the triplets are slurred.

  • Played this piece for Wind Ensemble and it is very hard to play WELL..

  • i listen to this piece very often, i love it.

  • I LOVED playing this!! we played it my freshman year in my high school's wind ensemble and i think we pulled it off pretty well!! we also played incantation and dance by john barnes chance which is my favourite piece ever

  • This piece is amazing. Getting me to play it THAT well with all the triple tonguing and all that would take a couple more years of experience. I'll get there. My band and I next year are doing the Jay Dawson arrangement for marching.

  • Were playing this right now for band. Actually one of the band directors for one of the concert bands at my school had the composer Jenkins as a professor in college and he pointed out one mistake to him one day and Jenkins hated him ever since and got really mad. It was a really funny story and no matter what he did the director couldnt get an A in his class, he even had this musical genius class mate do his homework once to prove the point and that guy never got anything but As and he got a B+

  • the french horn in this piece is absolutely phenomenal!

  • AGREED!!!

  • @bandgeek8795 True dat!!!!!! My high school band played this i play horn

  • We're playing this in band right now and I LOVE it.

  • HI SHELBY!!!

  • Eiger: A journey to the summit.

That would be just so badass. It truly is a wonderful piece.

  • DUDE, KICK-ASS! Do you think you can find a concert band arrangement of "All Through the Night"? Maybe even "Eagle Mark Summit", or some more stuff from Clare Grundman? :)
